SJR Q1Chemical Research in Toxicology

Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models for nanomaterials (nano-QSAR) were developed to predict the cytotoxicity of 20 different types of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to human lung cells by using quasi-SMILES. The optimal descriptors, recorded as quasi-SMILES, were encoded to represent the physicochemical properties and experimental conditions for the MWCNTs from 276 data records collected from previously published studies. The quasi-SMILES used to build the optimal d

Systemic vasculitis: A temporal bone histopathologic study
Tae Hyun Yoon, Michael M. Paparella, Patricia A. Schachern
SJR Q1The Laryngoscope

Systemic vasculitis includes a broad spectrum of disorders that may involve blood vessels of any size in any organ system. Systemic vasculitis is associated with immunopathogenic mechanisms. Sixteen temporal bones from eight persons were studied to determine histopathologic changes that occur in systemic vasculitis. Three persons had Wegener's granulomatosis, two had polyarteritis nodosa, and three had systemic lupus erythematosus. Otitis media was seen in 15 ears, with ten ears showing chronic

The adsorption of Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and Pahokee peat humic acid (PPHA) at the boehmite (gamma-AlOOH)/water interface and the impact of SRFA on boehmite dissolution have been examined over a wide range of solution pH conditions (pH 2-12), SRFA surface coverages (Gamma(SRFA), total SRFA binding site concentration normalized by the boehmite surface area) of 0.0-5.33 micromol m(-2), and PPHA surface coverages (Gamma(PPHA), PPHA binding site concentration normalized by boehmite surfac

Flow Cytometry-Based Quantification of Cellular Au Nanoparticles

SJR Q1Analytical Chemistry

There has been a great deal of research regarding the cellular association of nanoparticles (NPs), although there are only a few methods available yet for the quantitative measurements of cellular NPs. In this study, we propose a simple and quantitative method to estimate the cellular uptake of Au NPs into cervical cancer cells (HeLa) based on their side scattering (SSC) intensities measured by flow cytometry (FCM). We have compared SSC intensities of HeLa cells exposed to eight different types

Development of nanotoxicity prediction models is becoming increasingly important in the risk assessment of engineered nanomaterials. However, it has significant obstacles caused by the wide heterogeneities of published literature in terms of data completeness and quality. Here, we performed a meta-analysis of 216 published articles on oxide nanoparticles using 14 attributes of physicochemical, toxicological and quantum-mechanical properties. Particularly, to improve completeness and quality of t

Morphometric changes in the epithelium and subepithelium of the middle ear mucosa from children younger than 10 years of age were measured at the promontory in 85 temporal bones with otitis media and in 29 normal temporal bones by use of quantitative and semiquantitative methods. Comparisons of morphologic analysis in different otitis media types showed that acute inflammatory changes were usually seen in purulent otitis media with effusion and serous otitis media with effusion, and chronic infl

Abstract Understanding the interactions between nanoparticles (NPs) and human immune cells is necessary for justifying their utilization in consumer products and biomedical applications. However, conventional assays may be insufficient in describing the complexity and heterogeneity of cell–NP interactions. Herein, mass cytometry and single‐cell RNA‐sequencing (scRNA‐seq) are complementarily used to investigate the heterogeneous interactions between silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and primary immune

Adsorption of Suwannee River Fulvic Acid on Aluminum Oxyhydroxide Surfaces: An In Situ ATR-FTIR Study
Tae Hyun Yoon, Stephen B. Johnson, Gordon E. Brown
SJR Q1Langmuir

The adsorption of Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) on boehmite, gamma-AlO(OH), has been examined by both macroscopic adsorption and in situ ATR-FTIR spectroscopic techniques. At a SRFA concentration approaching surface saturation (F = 5.3 micromol m(-2)), adsorption is at a maximum at low pH and decreases as pH is increased. The ATR-FTIR spectral features of adsorbed SRFA are very similar to those measured approximately 1-2 pH units higher in solution, indicating that (i) the SRFA appears to be

In Situ Characterization of Aluminum-Containing Mineral−Microorganism Aqueous Suspensions Using Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy

SJR Q1Langmuir

In situ characterization of colloidal particles under hydrous conditions is one of the key requirements for understanding their state of aggregation and impact on the transport of pollutants in aqueous environments. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) is one of the few techniques that can satisfy this need by providing element- and chemical-state-specific 2-D maps at a spatial resolution better than 50 nm using soft X-rays from synchrotron radiation wiggler or undulator sources tuned t

Otosclerosis Involving the Vestibular Aqueduct and Meniere's Disease
Tae Hyun Yoon, Michael M. Paparella, Patricia A. Schachern
SJR Q1Otolaryngology

The coexistence of otosclerosis and endolymphatic hydrops in the temporal bone have been described; however, the mechanism for the development of endolymphatic hydrops in otosclerosis remains unknown. Among 128 temporal bones with otosclerosis, involvement of the vestibular aqueduct by otosclerosis was observed in four temporal bones from two patients. In all four, the vestibular aqueduct was filled with active otosclerotic foci; the lumen of the endolymphatic duct and sac was narrowed as a resu
