The effects of clozapine on the GSK‐3‐mediated signaling pathway
Ung Gu Kang, Myoung Suk Seo, Myoung‐Sun Roh, Yeni Kim, Yeni Kim, Se Chang Yoon, Yong Sik Kim, Yong Sik Kim
SJR Q1FEBS Letters

We investigated the effect of 10 microM clozapine on the activity of glycogen synthase kinase-3beta (GSK-3beta) and its upstream and downstream molecules in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells. Clozapine activates both Akt- and Dvl-mediated phosphorylation of GSK-3beta through phosphorylation at Ser9, and increased total cellular and intranuclear levels of beta-catenin. Pretreatment with the specific inhibitor of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-Akt pathway, LY294002 (20 microM), prevented

Problematic Use of Alcohol and Online Gaming as Coping Strategies During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Mini Review
Shijie Xu, Minkyung Park, Ung Gu Kang, Jung‐Seok Choi, Ja Wook Koo
SJR Q1Frontiers in PsychiatryOA

The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic has dramatically changed our daily lives and activities, including those originally intended to serve for leisure and pleasure. Drinking and online gaming became coping behaviors used to rescue ourselves from the stress and restricted lifestyle during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, frequent drinking and gaming can result in the pathological consequences of addiction. Those affected use the stimuli not to obtain pleasure, but rather to avoid the d

Event-related brain response to visual cues in individuals with Internet gaming disorder: relevance to attentional bias and decision-making
Bo-Mi Kim, Jiyoon Lee, A Ruem Choi, Sun Ju Chung, Minkyung Park, Ja Wook Koo, Ung Gu Kang, Jung‐Seok Choi
SJR Q1Translational PsychiatryOA

This study investigated attentional bias toward game-related cues in Internet gaming disorder (IGD) using electrophysiological markers of late positive potential (LPP) and identifying the sources of LPP. In addition, the association between LPP and decision-making ability was investigated. The IGD (n = 40) and healthy control (HC; n = 39) participants viewed a series of game-related and neutral pictures, while their event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. LPPs were calculated as the mean

Predicting acute kidney injury in cancer patients using heterogeneous and irregular data
Namyong Park, Eunjeong Kang, Minsu Park, Hajeong Lee, Hee-Gyung Kang, Hyung‐Jin Yoon, Ung Gu Kang
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

How can we predict the occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in cancer patients based on machine learning with serum creatinine data? Given irregular and heterogeneous clinical data, how can we make the most of it for accurate AKI prediction? AKI is a common and significant complication in cancer patients, and correlates with substantial morbidity and mortality. Since no effective treatment for AKI still exists, it is important to take timely preventive measures. While several approaches have

Activation and Tyrosine Phosphorylation of 44‐kDa Mitogen‐Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) Induced by Electroconvulsive Shock in Rat Hippocampus
Ung Gu Kang, Kyung Sue Hong, Hee Yeon Jung, Yong Sik Kim, Yeon‐Sun Seong, Yun Yang, Joo‐Bae Park
SJR Q1Journal of Neurochemistry

Electroconvulsive shock (ECS) has been reported to induce the phosphorylation and activation of 42-kDa, but not 44-kDa, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in rat hippocampus. We studied the activation and tyrosine phosphorylation of MAPKs in rat brain after ECS. We observed the increase of the activities of both 42- and 44-kDa MAPKs in rat hippocampus after ECS. The activities reached peak at 2 min and returned to basal levels by 15 min after ECS. We also observed the increased phosphorylat

Up-regulation of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) in the rat nucleus accumbens after repeated electroconvulsive shock
Myoung‐Sun Roh, Feng Ji Cui, Yong Min Ahn, Ung Gu Kang
SJR Q2Neuroscience ResearchOA

Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide regulates appetite, reward, and mood. CART expression is regulated via the protein kinase A (PKA) pathway, and electroconvulsive shock (ECS), an efficient antipsychotic and antidepressant measure, activates PKA-related signaling. Thus, we hypothesized that ECS may regulate the expression of CART. ECS given daily for five consecutive days increased CART mRNA and protein in the rat nucleus accumbens (NAc), accompanied by an increase in C

Regulation of NMDA Receptor Subunits after Acute Ethanol Treatment in Rat Brain
Myoung‐Sun Roh, Feng Ji Cui, Hye Kyeong Kim, Ung Gu Kang
SJR Q2Alcohol and Alcoholism

AIMS: Tolerance to ethanol-induced inhibition of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) is thought to underlie the acute adaptive mechanisms against ethanol. To explore these compensatory upregulating mechanisms of NMDARs, we investigated the expression and phosphorylation of NMDAR subunits in vivo following an acute ethanol treatment. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were given 4 g/kg ethanol, and the phospho-S896-NR1, NR2A and NR2B subunits of NMDAR were immunoblotted from the cerebral corte

Relationship between Resting-State Alpha Coherence and Cognitive Control in Individuals with Internet Gaming Disorder: A Multimodal Approach Based on Resting-State Electroencephalography and Event-Related Potentials
Minkyung Park, So Young Yoo, Jiyoon Lee, Ja Wook Koo, Ung Gu Kang, Jung‐Seok Choi
SJR Q2Brain SciencesOA

The human brain is constantly active, even at rest. Alpha coherence is an electroencephalography (EEG) rhythm that regulates functional connectivity between different brain regions. However, the relationships between resting-state alpha coherence and N2/P3 components associated with response inhibition and cognitive processes have not been investigated in addictive disorders. The present study investigated the relationships between alpha coherence during the resting state and N2/P3 components of
