Urban Resilience in Climate Change Adaptation: A Conceptual Framework
Donghyun Kim, Up Lim
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

This study presents a conceptual framework for analyzing urban resilience in the context of climate change. The key conceptual elements of resilience are first identified and then reorganized with a focus on cities and climate change adaptation. This study covers not only ecological and engineering resilience but also resilience as a sociopolitical process from an evolutionary perspective. The study’s conceptual framework centers on resilience as it relates to cities and climate change. Its find

Social Enterprise as a Catalyst for Sustainable Local and Regional Development
Donghyun Kim, Up Lim
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

This study aims to present an integrated theoretical framework of sustainable local and regional development with an emphasis on social economy theory. The theoretical literature on social economy and sustainable local and regional development are reviewed and integrated focusing on the obstacles of sustainability and the function of social economy in local and regional development. Are Neighbourhoods Self-stabilising? Exploring Endogenous Dynamics
George Galster, Jackie Cutsinger, Up Lim
SJR Q1Urban Studies

This study investigates how neighbourhoods respond when they are upset by transient, exogenous shock(s). Do they quickly revert to their original, stable state, gradually return to this stable state, permanently settle into another stable state, diverge progressively from any steady state, or evince no discernable pattern of response? A self-regulating adjustment process promoting stability appears the norm, based on econometric investigations of multiple, annually measured indicators from censu

Contextual Factors Affecting the Innovation Performance of Manufacturing SMEs in Korea: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach
Ye Seul Choi, Up Lim
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

This study empirically explores the relationship between innovation performance and the internal and contextual factors driving technological innovation in manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in metropolitan areas of Korea using structural equation modeling (SEM). Our analysis is based on firm-level data from the Korean Innovation Survey conducted by the Science and Technology Policy Institute in 2012. According to the results, SMEs’ innovation capacity was positively related

The Spatial Distribution of Innovative Activity in U.S. Metropolitan Areas: Evidence from Patent Data
Up Lim, Lim, Up
AgEcon Search (University of Minnesota, USA)OA

Despite the fact that knowledge spillovers have explicitly geographic components, the role of spatial effects in the knowledge spillover process has been ignored. In this context, the objective of this paper is to observe differences in the spatial distribution of innovative activity across U.S. metropolitan areas, and thereby to examine whether the concentration of innovative activity in a metropolitan area is spatially correlated to the concentration of neighboring metropolitan areas’ innovati

Knowledge Spillovers , Agglomeration Economies, and the Geography of Innovative Activity: A Spatial Econometric Analysis
Up Lim
SJR Q3Review of Regional StudiesOA

This paper investigates the extent to which innovative activity in a metropolitan area is affected by knowledge spillovers in the neighboring metropolitan areas as well as in the metropolitan area itself. The spatial econometric analysis shows that innovative activity in a metropolitan area is positively affected by both specialization and diversity externalities in high technology industries in the metropolitan area, and that there also exist geographic knowledge spillovers across metropolitan

Exploring the Spatial Distribution of Occupations Vulnerable to Climate Change in Korea
Donghyun Kim, Heonyeong Lee, Up Lim
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

This article aims to identify occupations at risk of climate change, and explore their spatial distribution by investigating their spatial concentration and cluster patterns in Korea. In order to identify professions vulnerable to climate change, we used three criteria: (1) exposure to the risks of job activities; (2) sensitivity to work environments; and (3) adaptive capacities based on the socioeconomic conditions of a person’s occupation. We identified 26 vocations as vulnerable, which corres

Toward Sustainable Economic Growth: A Spatial Panel Data Analysis of Regional Income Convergence in US BEA Economic Areas
Up Lim, Donghyun Kim
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

A question fundamental to sustainable economic growth is whether a poor region tends to grow faster than a rich one, such that the poor region catches up with the rich region in terms of the level of per capita income. In this article, we apply the spatial panel data approach to the analysis of regional income convergence across 177 economic areas in the contiguous US states over the period from 1969 to 2009. Using data on per capita incomes in the functionally defined economic areas, we find th

Knowledge Externalities, Spatial Dependence, and Metropolitan Economic Growth in the United States

SJR Q1Environment and Planning A Economy and Space

My purpose in this paper is to investigate the extent to which metropolitan economic growth is related to various types of knowledge externalities in high-technology industries in metropolitan areas for the period 1990–1999. The empirical results indicate the relative importance of the effects of high-technology specialisation externalities on metropolitan economic growth. In this paper I also find positive and highly significant evidence of spatial dependence in metropolitan economic growth. Th

Effects of Regional Creative Milieu on Interregional Migration of the Highly Educated in Korea: Evidence from Hierarchical Cross-Classified Linear Modeling
Ye Seul Choi, Up Lim
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

This study empirically investigates the effects of a regional creative milieu on the migration inflows and outflows of the highly educated between urbanized areas in Korea. To estimate the push and pull effects, we use the 5% Population and Housing Census (2005) and employ a hierarchical cross-classified linear model as an empirical modeling framework. The graduate migration between areas is generally affected by regional and individual characteristics. To this effect, the literature suggests th
