Shape Memory Alloy-Based Soft Gripper with Variable Stiffness for Compliant and Effective Grasping
Wei Wang, Sung‐Hoon Ahn
SJR Q1Soft Robotics

Soft pneumatic actuators and motor-based mechanisms being concomitant with the cumbersome appendages have many challenges to making the independent robotic system with compact and lightweight configuration. Meanwhile, shape memory actuators have shown a promising alternative solution in many engineering applications ranging from artificial muscle to aerospace industry. However, one of the main limitations of such systems is their inherent softness resulting in a small actuation force, which prev

Locomotion of inchworm-inspired robot made of smart soft composite (SSC)
Wei Wang, Jang-Yeob Lee, Hugo Rodrigue, Sung-Hyuk Song, Won‐Shik Chu, Sung‐Hoon Ahn
SJR Q1Bioinspiration & Biomimetics

A soft-bodied robot made of smart soft composite with inchworm-inspired locomotion capable of both two-way linear and turning movement has been proposed, developed, and tested. The robot was divided into three functional parts based on the different functions of the inchworm: the body, the back foot, and the front foot. Shape memory alloy wires were embedded longitudinally in a soft polymer to imitate the longitudinal muscle fibers that control the abdominal contractions of the inchworm during l

Soft Tendril-Inspired Grippers: Shape Morphing of Programmable Polymer–Paper Bilayer Composites
Wei Wang, Chenzhe Li, Maenghyo Cho, Sung‐Hoon Ahn
SJR Q1ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

Nastic movements in plants that occur in response to environmental stimuli have inspired many man-made shape-morphing systems. Tendril is an exemplification serving as a parasitic grasping component for the climbing plants by transforming from a straight shape into a coiled configuration via the asymmetric contraction of internal stratiform plant tissues. Inspired by tendrils, this study using a three-dimensional (3D) printing approach developed a class of soft grippers with preprogrammed deform

Shape Memory Alloy-Based Soft Finger with Changeable Bending Length Using Targeted Variable Stiffness
Wei Wang, Chak Yuk Yu, Pablo Antonio Abrego Serrano, Sung‐Hoon Ahn
SJR Q1Soft Robotics

This work described a bioinspired soft robotic finger with variable bending length to conform objects with different sizes by means of selectively varying the structural stiffness of its segments. The basic design is a shape memory alloy-based soft actuator with embedded stiffness-varying structures serving as modifiable endoskeletons. The stiffness-varying structure is composed of shape memory polymer (SMP) embedded with Nichrome (Ni-Cr) wires as heating elements. Joule heating of SMP through N

Kirigami/Origami‐Based Soft Deployable Reflector for Optical Beam Steering
Wei Wang, Chenzhe Li, Hugo Rodrigue, Fengpei Yuan, Min‐Woo Han, Maenghyo Cho, Sung‐Hoon Ahn
SJR Q1Advanced Functional Materials

The beam steering mechanism has been a key element for various applications ranging from sensing and imaging to solar tracking systems. However, conventional beam steering systems are bulky and complex and present significant challenges for scaling up. This work introduces the use of soft deployable reflectors combining a soft deployable structure with simple kirigami/origami reflective films. This structure can be used as a macroscale beam steering mechanism that is both simple and compact. Thi

Deployable Soft Composite Structures
Wei Wang, Hugo Rodrigue, Sung‐Hoon Ahn
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Deployable structure composed of smart materials based actuators can reconcile its inherently conflicting requirements of low mass, good shape adaptability, and high load-bearing capability. This work describes the fabrication of deployable structures using smart soft composite actuators combining a soft matrix with variable stiffness properties and hinge-like movement through a rigid skeleton. The hinge actuator has the advantage of being simple to fabricate, inexpensive, lightweight and simple

SJR Q1Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) are an intriguing class of smart materials possessing reversible shape change and recovery capabilities. Effective routes to shape-memory porous films (SMPFs) are few and limited in scope owing to the difficulty in manipulating the shape change of pores by conventional methods. Herein we report an unconventional strategy for crafting light-driven SMPFs by judiciously constructing highly ordered porous films via a facile "breath figure" approach, followed by sequentia

SJR Q1Materials Horizons

The first soft deployable robot, called DeployBot, capable of both deploying itself and of movement without additional motors is introduced. This robot can serve as the first step toward a new class of soft robots that is modular, self-deploying, and capable of locomotion “out of the box”.

System design and animal experiment study of a novel minimally invasive surgical robot
Wei Wang, Jianmin Li, Shuxin Wang, He Su, Xueming Jiang
SJR Q2International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery

BACKGROUND: Robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery has shown tremendous advances over the traditional technique. However, currently commercialized systems are large and complicated, which vastly raises the system cost and operation room requirements. METHODS: A MIS robot named 'MicroHand' was developed over the past few years. The basic principle and the key technologies are analyzed in this paper. Comparison between the proposed robot and the da Vinci system is also presented. Finally, anima

Shape Memory Alloy‐Based Soft Amphibious Robot Capable of Seal‐Inspired Locomotion
Jonghyun Hwang, Wei Wang
SJR Q1Advanced Materials Technologies

Abstract Robots are often required to have multimodal and amphibious capabilities for dynamic environments. Although shape memory alloy (SMA) has been exploited in creating various types of deformation in soft actuators, no SMA‐based multimodal soft amphibious robot has been reported. This study describes a soft amphibious robot made of SMA‐based soft actuators that mimics the terrestrial and subaqueous motion of crawling seals. The soft amphibious robot named SEALicone exhibits two gaits, crawl

Robotic soft swim bladder using liquid–vapor phase transition
Beomchan Kang, Yong-Kyu Lee, Tailin Piao, Zhengbing Ding, Wei Wang
SJR Q1Materials Horizons

The swim bladder is crucial to underwater robots to enhance their overall performance and to expand their range of motion. However, previous attempts to incorporate this function have failed or have adopted mechanical swim bladders with high-disturbances. This study presents an entirely soft swim bladder capable of controlling buoyancy selectively and noiselessly, making it applicable to sensitive underwater environments. The soft swim bladder, which consists of an elastic cover layer, flexible
