OBJECTIVES: To compare the duration of regional anesthesia of the pelvic limb using bupivacaine with and without a temperature-responsive hydrogel (TRH) in dogs. METHODS: epinephrine) to block the femoral and sciatic nerves bilaterally via ultrasound with nerve stimulation guidance. Bupivacaine was used on one pelvic limb (Bup treatment), and bupivacaine with TRH was used on the contralateral limb (Bup-TRH treatment). The nerve block was considered successful upon the absence of responses to pin

Modified retrograde intubation through the cricothyroid membrane in a cat with temporomandibular joint ankylosis
Dalhae Kim, Inhyung Lee, Won‐gyun Son
SJR Q1Veterinary Medicine and ScienceOA

A 6-month-old, 2.9-kg, male, Korean short hair cat was referred for inadequate mouth opening (4 mm), and condylectomy was scheduled for ankylosis of the left temporomandibular joint. Retrograde intubation via the cricothyroid membrane was planned since direct visualisation of the larynx was not possible. In dorsal recumbency, the cricothyroid membrane was punctured with an 18-gauge needle, and a J-tip guidewire, inserted via the needle, was advanced and identified at the mouth. A 6-Fr truncated

SJR Q1Journal of Small Animal Practice

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effects of ethmoidal and maxillary nerve blocks during rhinoscopy in dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen dogs underwent rhinoscopy. Under general anaesthesia with isoflurane, ethmoidal and maxillary nerve blocks were applied bilaterally using 2% lidocaine before rhinoscopy in eight dogs (EM group). Six dogs were premedicated with hydromorphone (0.05 mg/kg) as a substitute for local nerve block (H group). During rhinoscopy, the heart rate, a

SJR Q1Veterinary Anaesthesia and AnalgesiaOA

Objective To determine the incidence of intra-anesthetic hyperglycemia and identify associated risk factors in non-diabetic dogs undergoing general anesthesia. Study design Retrospective, single-center cohort study. Animals Four hundred client-owned, non-diabetic dogs anesthetized for surgical or diagnostic procedures between May and December 2024. Methods Medical records were reviewed to collect data on patient characteristics, anesthetic management, and intra-anesthetic blood glucose concentra

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the intraoperative isoflurane-sparing and cardiovascular effects of a combined infusion of remifentanil-lidocaine-ketamine versus remifentanil-ketamine for balanced anaesthesia in cats to investigate the effect of lidocaine infusion in various clinical situations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Among patients with various health statuses undergoing surgical procedures, 18 cats administered remifentanil-lidocaine-ketamine were compared with 20 cats ad

Transient postoperative glycosuria after isoflurane exposure in two dogs
Joonseok Cha, Chi Won Shin, Won‐gyun Son
SJR Q1Journal of Small Animal Practice

The present report describes two surgical cases involving the development of sudden glycosuria after isoflurane anaesthesia, despite the dogs having normal blood glucose levels and renal glucose reabsorption. The glycosuria manifested 1 day after surgery and resolved spontaneously within 2 days in both cases. Considering that the surgeries (subcutaneous mandibular mass removal and fracture repair) were unrelated to the kidneys, and there were no remarkable events during anaesthesia, the glycosur

SJR Q1Veterinary Anaesthesia and AnalgesiaOA

Objective To identify the feasibility of the anatomical landmark-guided ‘hit-rib’ technique for distributing injectate solution in the thoracic lateral cutaneous fascial plane (TLC PLANE ) and to evaluate injectate dispersion. Study design Prospective, experimental, randomized cadaveric study. Animals A group of 10 adult Beagle dog cadavers. Methods In three cadavers, the feasibility of TLC PLANE dispersion of injectate was evaluated using the hit-rib technique. Hypodermic needles (23 or 26 gaug
