Robot-assisted Therapy in Stroke Rehabilitation
Won Hyuk Chang, Yun‐Hee Kim
SJR Q1Journal of StrokeOA

Research into rehabilitation robotics has grown rapidly and the number of therapeutic rehabilitation robots has expanded dramatically during the last two decades. Robotic rehabilitation therapy can deliver high-dosage and high-intensity training, making it useful for patients with motor disorders caused by stroke or spinal cord disease. Robotic devices used for motor rehabilitation include end-effector and exoskeleton types; herein, we review the clinical use of both types. One application of ro

SJR Q1Neurorehabilitation and neural repair

BACKGROUND: . Robot-assisted gait training has the potential to improve cardiopulmonary fitness after stroke, even for patients who are in the early stages of recovery and not independent ambulators. The authors compared the effects of robot-assisted gait training and conventional physical therapy on cardiopulmonary fitness. METHODS: . A prospective single-blinded, randomized controlled study of 37 patients receiving inpatient rehabilitation was performed within 1 month after stroke onset. The r

Cerebrolysin combined with rehabilitation promotes motor recovery in patients with severe motor impairment after stroke

SJR Q2BMC NeurologyOA

BACKGROUND: Cerebrolysin is a neuropeptide preparation with neuroprotective and neurorestorative effects. Combining Cerebrolysin treatment with a standardized rehabilitation program may have a potential synergistic effect in the subacute stage of stroke. This study aims to evaluate whether Cerebrolysin provides additional motor recovery on top of rehabilitation therapy in the subacute stroke patients with moderate to severe motor impairment. METHODS: This phase IV trial was designed as a prospec

SJR Q3Restorative Neurology and NeuroscienceOA

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) may enhance plastic changes in the human cortex and modulation of behavior. However, the underlying neural mechanisms have not been sufficiently investigated. We examined the clinical effects and neural correlates of high-frequency rTMS coupled with motor training in patients with hemiparesis after stroke. METHODS: Twenty-one patients were randomly divided into two groups, and received either real or sham rTMS. Ten daily

SJR Q2BMC NeurologyOA

BACKGROUND: Development of a long-term stroke care plan requires serial assessment of long-term patient function and consideration of caregiver mood. However, to date, few comprehensive cohort studies have included both stroke patients and caregivers. METHODS/DESIGN: KOSCO is a large, multi-centre prospective cohort study for all acute first-ever stroke patients admitted to participating hospitals in nine distinct areas of Korea. This study is designed as a 10-year, longitudinal follow-up invest

Return to work after stroke: The KOSCO Study

Many stroke patients did not return to work despite functional independence at 6 months after stroke. Based on the results of this study, we suggest providing appropriate vocational rehabilitation for stroke patients and proper education for employers to increase the rate of early return to work in stroke patients.

SJR Q1Neuropsychological Rehabilitation

Donepezil has been proven effective in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. However, its effects on the cognitive neural network have not been fully investigated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of donepezil on reorganisation of the cognitive neural network in patients with post-stroke cognitive impairment using functional MRI (fMRI). Fourteen patients with stroke in the right hemisphere were enrolled. Participants were randomly assigned to the experim

SJR Q3Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience

Our findings suggest that high-frequency rTMS interventions aimed at improving upper extremity motor function in patients with subacute stroke with moderate to severe motor involvement should be individually tailored according to functional CST status and BDNF genotype.

SJR Q1Journal of Rehabilitation MedicineOA

Cumulative HF-rTMS over the M1-LL might be effective for improving freezing of gait in patients with atypical Parkinsonism. Further investigation with a large number of participants is needed to clarify the effects of HF- rTMS on freezing of gait in atypical Parkinsonism.
