15BACKGROUND: Recent studies using stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have reported high tumor response and local control. However, the optimal SBRT dose remains unknown, and it is still not clear whether a dose response relationship for local control (LC) and overall survival (OS) exist or not. We performed this study to determine whether a dose response relationship for LC and OS is observed in SBRT for inoperable HCC. METHODS: Between 2003 and 2011, 108 pat
BACKGROUND: Although several prospective studies have reported the efficacy of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), treatment-related toxicity varies and has not been determined. Therefore, the authors evaluated the safety and efficacy of SBRT for patients with HCC in a hepatitis B virus-endemic area. METHODS: This multicenter phase 2 trial enrolled patients with unresectable HCC. Patients received SBRT with 45 to 60 Gy in 3 fractions. To evaluate gastroduode
PVR reduced the RV volume and improved the RV function within the first postoperative year. The rate of freedom from reoperation during the 10-year follow-up period in our series was acceptable. However, a longer follow-up will be necessary to determine the long-term outcomes of bioprosthetic valves in PVR.
This large study indicates that metformin might decrease cancer-specific mortality rates in localized resectable pancreatic cancer patients with pre-existing diabetes, independently of other factors, with a dose-response relationship.
BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of metformin on the clinical outcomes of patients receiving radiotherapy for inoperable hepatocellular carcinoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of 217 patients treated with stereotactic body or hypofractionated radiotherapy for inoperable hepatocellular carcinoma were reviewed. Patients were divided into the metformin group (n=19) and the non-metformin group (n=198), including those with diabetes (n=29), and those without (n
Glioblastoma is a deadly cancer tumor in the brain and has a survival rate of about 15 months. Despite the high mortality rate, temozolomide has proven to increase the survival rate of patients when combined with radiotherapy. However, its effects may be limited because some patients develop therapeutic resistance. Curcumin has proven to be a cancer treatment due to its broad anticancer spectrum, high efficiency and low toxic level. Additionally, curcumin significantly enhanced radiation efficac
Carbon monoxide (CO) is one of well known chemical asphyxiants which cause tissue hypoxia with prominent neurologic and cardiovascular injury. Cardiac dysfunction after CO poisoning can be presented as two clinical patterns. One is transient global left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and the other is LV dysfunction with regional wall motion abnormalities. In this case report, we present a case with transient LV systolic dysfunction caused by intentional exposure to CO. After conservative treatment
Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), an advanced RT technique, is a considerable treatment option for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the distinguishing features of IMRT for HCC have not yet been clearly defined. A systematic review was performed according to the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. The PubMed/MedLine, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and KoreaMed were used to screen eligible studies focusing on treatment out
Radiotherapy (RT) is one of the primary cancer treatment modalities. To estimate the actual utilization of RT and infrastructure in Korea, the current study was performed. Data from 2012 to 2016 were extracted from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. In addition, a nationwide survey was conducted to collect the statistics of RT facilities, equipment and human resources in Korea. The total number of patients treated with RT was 72 563 in 2016. The five cancers that were most commo
The Cabrol procedure is one of several techniques used for re-implantation of a coronary artery. After replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic valve using a composite graft, second Dacron tube grafts are used for anastomosis between the ascending aortic graft and the coronary arteries. Ostial stenosis is one of the complications associated with the Cabrol operation. However, there have been no reported cases of acute thrombosis of a Cabrol graft. Here we report a case with acute ST elevati
Abstract The stability of food emulsions containing milk proteins and sucrose ester was studied by measuring the creaming velocity of an oil‐in‐water emulsion. The inter‐droplet interaction was quantified by measuring the radial distribution function using an advanced digital imaging technique. The phenomenon of protein sub‐micelles layering inside the film formed between the adjacent droplets was observed by using the capillary force balance apparatus. The attractive interaction of the droplets
The texture of food emulsions was quantified as the structure factor using the backlight scattering technique. The change of the texture of food emulsions under steady flow was monitored in terms of the structure factor. The role of different types of protein (sodium caseinate and soy protein) on the change of texture of food emulsions under steady flow was studied. The emulsion stabilized by sodium caseinate was more stable under steady flow than the food emulsion stabilized by FP940 (partially
The primary motivation of this investigative study is trying to find an alternative treatment that can be used to slow down or treat glioblastoma due to the witnessed toxic side effects of the current drugs coupled with limited effectiveness in overall treatment. Consequently, a Chinese plant extract emodin proves to play a critical role in this investigative study since results from the Western blot and the other accompanying assays for anti-cancer effects indicate that it cannot work a lot to
BACKGROUND/AIM: This study examined whether metformin can enhance the radiation response in a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) xenograft mice model and patient population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Huh-7 human HCC-bearing xenograft mice were treated with gamma-ray, metformin, neutron therapy, and their combinations. Tumour growth and lung colonies were assessed. Overall, 145 patients who underwent radiotherapy for HCC were retrospectively analysed. RESULTS: The combinations of gamma-ray and metformin
