15BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic partial repair is a treatment option in irreparable large-to-massive rotator cuff tears without arthritic changes. However, there are indications that arthroscopic partial repair does not yield satisfactory outcomes. PURPOSE: To report the clinical and radiographic results of arthroscopic partial repairs in patients with irreparable large-to-massive cuff tears. In addition, an analysis was performed regarding preoperative factors that may influence patient outcomes and p
Summary Antibacterial activities of ginseng extracts produced from ginseng by‐products, stems and leaves, using subcritical water extraction ( SWE ) at 110, 165 and 190 °C, were evaluated and compared with those of ginseng extracts prepared by hot water and ethanol extraction. The ginseng stems–leaves extract produced by SWE at 190 °C contained the greatest concentration of phenolics (98.4 mg GAE g −1 of extract). All ginseng extracts inhibited the growth of Bacillus cereus, Salmonella enteritid
Post-translational phosphorylation plays critical roles in the assembly of signaling and repair proteins in the DNA damage response pathway. RAP80, a component of the BRCA1-A complex, is crucial in cell cycle checkpoint activation and DNA damage repair. However, its molecular mechanism is unclear. In this study, we identified Cdk1 as a new RAP80-binding protein and demonstrated that the Cdk1-cyclin B1 complex phosphorylates RAP80 at Ser-677 using an in vitro kinase assay and a phosphopeptide-spe
C/SiC composites were prepared via isothermal chemical vapor infiltration (ICVI). A novel process of in situ whisker growing and matrix filling during ICVI was devised to reduce the porosity of the C/SiC composites, by alternating the dilute‐gas species. C/SiC composites with increased density were prepared successfully using this novel process, in comparison with those obtained from the conventional ICVI process. The whiskers seem to have grown into the large pores and modified the pore structu
Purpose: The pharmacokinetics of phenytoin is complicated by genetic and environmental differences. It is, therefore, important to monitor the serum concentrations in patients who receive phenytoin. Because most of the phenytoin in serum is bound to proteins, the level of serum albumin influences the amount of free phenytoin. Materials and Methods: We compared the measured and calculated free phenytoin levels in epileptic patients who were taking phenytoin monotherapy, using the Sheiner-Tozer eq
Background and Purpose Sleep need differs between individuals, and so the same duration of sleep will lead to sleep insufficiency in some individuals but not others. The aim of this study was to determine the separate and combined associations of both sleep duration and unmet sleep need with excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in Korean adults. Methods The participants comprised 2,769 Korean adults aged 19 years or older. They completed questionnaires about their sleep habits over the previous mo
Purpose: Late diagnosis and treatment lead to high mortality and poor prognosis in tuberculous meningitis (TbM). A rapid and accurate diagnosis is necessary for a good prognosis. Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) has been investigated as a biochemical marker of nervous tissue damage. In the present study, the usefulness of NSE was evaluated, and a cut-off value for the differential diagnosis of TbM was proposed. Materials and Methods: Patient charts were reviewed for levels of serum and cerebrospina
Objective: To assess and compare restless legs syndrome (RLS) prevalence according to International RLS Study Group (IRLSSG) essential criteria and Cambridge-Hopkins diagnostic questionnaire (CH-RLSq) in Korean population sample. Method: We selected a stratified random population sample of Koreans over age 19 and evaluated them with Cambridge-Hopkins diagnostic questionnaire to identify restless legs syndrome. We also assessed RLS prevalence according to IRLSSG criteria using questions in Cambri
Background: The association between restless legs syndrome (RLS) and hypertension remains controversial. We investigated the relationship between RLS and hypertension in a nationwide sample of the Korean adult population. Methods: This was a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study including 2,740 adults aged 19 years or more. Subjects who met the four essential International RLS Study Group criteria and reported symptoms occurring at least once a week were defined as the RLS group. The presenc
The prediction of functional outcome in patients with acute cerebral infarction depends on many factors. Various techniques have been applied to predict severity and outcome after cerebral infarction. Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is a component of a specific brain enzyme and a useful marker of brain injury. We evaluated the relation between initial serum NSE level and short- and long-term clinical outcome in 59 patients with acute cerebral infarction and in 38 age-matched healthy controls. Seru
We report the case of a 52-year-old woman who developed vertical diplopia of 1-days duration. Neuro-ophthalmological testing revealed left trochlear nerve palsy, and sellar MRI revealed a 1.5cm-sized pituitary mass lesion, a Rathke's cleft cyst. The diplopia disappeared spontaneously after 6 days.
Background Facial diplegia has diverse etiologies, including viral and bacterial infections such as diphtheria, syphilis and Lyme disease, and also protozoal infection in very rarely cases. Case Report A 20-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital due to bilateral weakness of the upper and lower facial muscles. Examination revealed that the patient had a facial diplegia of the peripheral type. A peripheral blood smear demonstrated the presence of the asexual trophozoite stage of Plasmo
Persistent central nervous system (CNS) immune dysregulation and consequent dysfunction of multiple neural cell types is central to the neurobiological underpinnings of a cognitive impairment syndrome that can occur following traditional cancer therapies or certain infections. Immunotherapies have revolutionized cancer care for many tumor types, but the potential long-term cognitive sequelae are incompletely understood. Here, we demonstrate in mouse models that chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T
