We performed a phase II study of combination chemotherapy with irinotecan, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin in metastatic gastric cancer patients who were previously treated with taxane and cisplatin, to evaluate the antitumour activity and toxicity of the combination chemotherapy. The metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma patients who were previously treated with taxane and cisplatin combination as first line, and had at least one measurable lesion, 0-2 ECOG performance status and adequate orga

SJR Q1NutrientsOA

Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a new concept where the presence of both fatty liver and metabolic abnormality are necessary for diagnosis. Several studies have reported that altered gut microbiome is closely associated with metabolic diseases and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. However, the studies on MAFLD population are scarce. This prospective study aimed to identify differences in gut microbiome between patients with MAFLD and healthy controls in Korean population. In

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

The association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the risk of pancreatic cancer in the general population remains unclear. This nationwide cohort study included 8,120,674 adults who underwent a national health screening in 2009 from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Participants were followed-up until December 2017 for the development of pancreatic cancer. NAFLD was assessed using the fatty liver index: ≥ 60, NAFLD and < 30, no NAFLD. Multivariable Cox pr

Cancer cachexia affects quality of life, response to chemotherapy, and survival in many advanced cancer patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of pretreatment cachexia index (CXI) in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with systematic chemotherapy. Patients with advanced HCC treated with lenvatinib therapy between October 2018 and October 2020 were retrospectively studied. The CXI was calculated as (L3 skeletal muscle index) × (serum albumi

Non-invasive prediction of forthcoming cirrhosis-related complications
Wonseok Kang
SJR Q1World Journal of GastroenterologyOA

In patients with chronic liver diseases, identification of significant liver fibrosis and cirrhosis is essential for determining treatment strategies, assessing therapeutic response, and stratifying long-term prognosis. Although liver biopsy remains the reference standard for evaluating the extent of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic liver diseases, several non-invasive methods have been developed as alternatives to liver biopsies. Some of these non-invasive methods have demonstrated clini

Clinical Implications of Chemokines in Acute and Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection
Wonseok Kang, Eui‐Cheol Shin
SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

Hepatitis C virus (HCV), a non-cytopathic positive-stranded RNA virus, is one of the most common causes of chronic liver diseases such as chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Upon HCV infection, the majority of patients fail to clear the virus and progress to chronic hepatitis C. Chemokines are small chemotactic cytokines that direct the recruitment of immune cells and coordinate immune responses upon viral infection. Chemokine production during acute HCV infection co

Colorimetric Focus-Forming Assay with Automated Focus Counting by Image Analysis for Quantification of Infectious Hepatitis C Virions
Wonseok Kang, Eui‐Cheol Shin
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the leading cause of liver transplantation in Western countries. Studies of HCV infection using cell culture-produced HCV (HCVcc) in vitro systems require quantification of infectious HCV virions, which has conventionally been performed by immunofluorescence-based focus-forming assay with manual foci counting; however, this is a laborious and time-consuming procedure with potentially biased results. In the present study, we established and optimized a method

Background: This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and macroscopic tumor thrombosis who were treated with lenvatinib with or without combined liver-directed radiotherapy (LRT). Methods: From the institutional registry, we enrolled 82 patients diagnosed with HCC involving macroscopic tumor thrombosis and treated with lenvatinib monotherapy (non-LRT group, n = 54, 65.9%) or lenvatinib in combination with LRT (LRT group, n = 28, 34.1%). Nonspecific Interstitial Pneumonitis after Bortezomib and Thalidomide Treatment in a Multiple Myeloma Patient

SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

Bortezomib, an inhibitor of 26S proteosome, is recently approved treatment option for multiple myeloma. Thalidomide, a drug with immunomodulating and antiangiogenic effects, has also shown promise as an effective treatment in multiple myeloma. Pulmonary complications are believed to be rare, especially interstitial lung disease. Here, we describe a patient with dyspnea and diffuse pulmonary infiltrates while receiving bortezomib and thalidomide in combination with dexamethasone for treatment-naï

When to stop nucleos(t)ide analogues treatment for chronic hepatitis B? Durability of antiviral response
Wonseok Kang
SJR Q1World Journal of GastroenterologyOA

Introduction of nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) for oral antiviral therapy has dramatically improved the clinical outcome in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Although current international guidelines for the management of CHB provide information regarding when to begin the antiviral therapy with NAs, there is no clear consensus on when to stop the treatment, especially for those who respond to the therapy. Hepatitis B surface antigen loss has been regarded as an ideal endpoint of oral anti
