Clinical Application of Virtual Reality for Upper Limb Motor Rehabilitation in Stroke: Review of Technologies and Clinical Evidence

SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Neurorehabilitation for stroke is important for upper limb motor recovery. Conventional rehabilitation such as occupational therapy has been used, but novel technologies are expected to open new opportunities for better recovery. Virtual reality (VR) is a technology with a set of informatics that provides interactive environments to patients. VR can enhance neuroplasticity and recovery after a stroke by providing more intensive, repetitive, and engaging training due to several advantages, includ

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Virtual home-based rehabilitation is an emerging area in stroke rehabilitation. Functional assessment tools are essential to monitor recovery and provide current function-based rehabilitation. We developed the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) tool using Kinect (Microsoft, USA) and validated it for hemiplegic stroke patients. Forty-one patients with hemiplegic stroke were enrolled. Thirteen of 33 items were selected for upper extremity motor FMA. One occupational therapist assessed the motor FMA while

As persons with stroke are surviving longer, monitoring and managing their quality of life is becoming important. We reviewed the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) in order to evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in stroke survivors as measured by the Euro Quality of Life-5D (EQ-5D), and to find out influencing factors. A total of 42,500 subjects were enrolled in the KNHANES, and 575 of them were persons with stroke. The EQ-5D index was lower in pers

Expression of an 11 kDa methionine‐rich delta‐zein in transgenic soybean results in the formation of two types of novel protein bodies in transitional cells situated between the vascular tissue and storage parenchyma cells
Won‐Seok Kim, Hari B. Krishnan
SJR Q1Plant Biotechnology JournalOA

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is an important protein source in human diets and animal feeds. The sulphur content of soybean seed proteins, however, is not optimal for ration formulations. Thus, increasing the methionine and cysteine content of soybean seed proteins would enhance the nutritional quality of this widely utilized legume. We have earlier reported the isolation of an 11 kDa delta-zein protein rich in methionine from the endosperm of the maize (Zea mays L.) inbred line W23a1 [Kim,

SJR Q3MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: We designed this study to prove the efficacy of the low-cost Kinect-based virtual rehabilitation (VR) system for upper limb recovery among patients with subacute stroke. METHODS: A double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial was performed. A total of 23 subjects with subacute stroke (<3 months) were allocated to sham (n = 11) and real VR group (n = 12). Both groups participated in a daily 30-minute occupational therapy for upper limb recovery for 10 consecutive weekdays. Subjects

Low-Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Over Contralesional Motor Cortex for Motor Recovery in Subacute Ischemic Stroke: A Randomized Sham-Controlled Trial

SJR Q1Neurorehabilitation and neural repair

Background Low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the contralesional motor cortex (M1) has demonstrated beneficial effects on motor recovery, but evidence among patients with subacute stroke is lacking. We aimed to investigate whether 1-Hz rTMS over the contralesional M1 versus sham rTMS could improve arm function in patients with subacute ischemic stroke when combined with rehabilitative motor training. Methods In total, 77 patients who were within 90 days after

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. OBJECTIVE: To prospectively assess the incidence of dysphagia and to present the serial changes of each finding in the videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The reported incidence of dysphagia after ACDF has varied widely, and the serial changes of dysphagia using VFSS have not been clearly determined yet. METHODS: Data of 47 patients preoperatively and at 1 week and 1 month postop

Secondary electron emission from magnesium oxide on multiwalled carbon nanotubes
Won‐Seok Kim, Whikun Yi, SeGi Yu, Jungna Heo, Taewon Jeong, Jeonghee Lee, Chang‐Soo Lee, J. M. Kim, Hee Jin Jeong, Young Min Shin, Young Hee Lee
SJR Q1Applied Physics Letters

We have investigated effects of electric fields on the yield of secondary electron emission (SEE) from the primary electron bombardment on magnesium oxide (MgO) covering vertically grown multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). We observe that the yield of SEE increases up to at least 22 000 at a special condition. The strong local field generated by the sharp tip of vertically grown MWCNTs accelerates secondary electrons generated by primary electrons. This eventually gives rise to so called Town

SJR Q1Applied Physics Letters

We investigated the effect of plasma treatment on single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) field emitters, which were fabricated by printing a photoimageable SWCNT paste, to improve emission lifetime. The treatment was performed by applying a dc pulsed voltage between two electrodes, where the cathode was the SWCNT emitter to be treated and the anode was a bare indium-doped tin oxide glass, under inert gas (Xe∕Ne) atmosphere. With increasing applied voltage and treatment time, the stability of the

Transcranial direct current stimulation for the treatment of motor impairment following traumatic brain injury

SJR Q1Journal of NeuroEngineering and RehabilitationOA

After traumatic brain injury (TBI), motor impairment is less common than neurocognitive or behavioral problems. However, about 30% of TBI survivors have reported motor deficits limiting the activities of daily living or participation. After acute primary and secondary injuries, there are subsequent changes including increased GABA-mediated inhibition during the subacute stage and neuroplastic alterations that are adaptive or maladaptive during the chronic stage. Therefore, timely and appropriate

Effects of proteome rebalancing and sulfur nutrition on the accumulation of methionine rich δ-zein in transgenic soybeans
Won‐Seok Kim, Joseph M. Jez, Hari B. Krishnan
SJR Q1Frontiers in Plant ScienceOA

Expression of heterologous methionine-rich proteins to increase the overall sulfur amino acid content of soybean seeds has been only marginally successful, presumably due to low accumulation of transgenes in soybeans or due to gene silencing. Proteome rebalancing of seed proteins has been shown to promote the accumulation of foreign proteins. In this study, we have utilized RNAi technology to suppress the expression of the β-conglycinin, the abundant 7S seed storage proteins of soybean. Western

Brain & NeurorehabilitationOA

Studies using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in healthy individuals and those with neuropsychiatric diseases have rapidly increased since the 1990s, due to the potential of rTMS to modulate the cortical excitability in the brain depending on the stimulation parameters; therefore, the safety considerations for rTMS use are expected to become more important. Wassermann published the first safety guidelines for rTMS from the consensus conference held in 1996, and Rossi and coll
