Transmission eigenchannels in a disordered medium

SJR Q1Physical Review B

While the distribution of the transmission eigenvalues of a disordered medium is well understood in the context of random-matrix theory, the properties of eigenchannels have remained unexplored. In this study, we have solved electromagnetic wave propagation through a disordered medium using the finite-difference time-domain method, we numerically constructed a transmission matrix in an optical regime, and we obtained its eigenchannels as well as its eigenvalues. We observe that open eigenchannel

Flexible-type ultrathin holographic endoscope for microscopic imaging of unstained biological tissues

SJR Q1Nature CommunicationsOA

Ultrathin lensless fibre endoscopes offer minimally invasive investigation, but they mostly operate as a rigid type due to the need for prior calibration of a fibre probe. Furthermore, most implementations work in fluorescence mode rather than label-free imaging mode, making them unsuitable for general medical diagnosis. Herein, we report a fully flexible ultrathin fibre endoscope taking 3D holographic images of unstained tissues with 0.85-μm spatial resolution. Using a bare fibre bundle as thin

FDTD Simulation for Light Extraction in a GaN-Based LED
최원준, 박규환, Cheolsoo Sone, Dongho Kim, 전헌수, Yongjo Park

It is well known that light extraction from an LED can be enhanced by roughening the surface of the LED on a wavelength scale. However, the surface structure for optimal extraction and the underlying physical mechanism for increased emission are still largely unknown. In this work, we present both numerical and experimental studies on light extraction in GaN-based LEDs with square lattice photonic crystal patterns by using large-scale, three-dimensional FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) simul

Merging multiple microprocessors with high-speed optical networks has been considered a promising strategy for the improvement of overall computation power. However, the loss of the optical communication bandwidth is inevitable when interfacing between optical and electronic components. Here we present an on-chip plasmonic switching device consisting of a two-dimensional (2D) disordered array of nanoholes on a thin metal film that can provide multiple-input and multiple-output channels for trans

Perfect transmission through Anderson localized systems mediated by a cluster of localized modes
Wonjun Choi, Q‐Han Park, Wonshik Choi
SJR Q1Optics ExpressOA

In a strongly scattering medium where Anderson localization takes place, constructive interference of local non-propagating waves dominate over the incoherent addition of propagating waves. This results in the disappearance of propagating waves within the medium, which significantly attenuates energy transmission. In this numerical study performed in the optical regime, we systematically found resonance modes, called eigenchannels, of a 2-D Anderson localized system that allow for the near-perfe

Mixed-order phase transition in a two-step contagion model with a single infectious seed

SJR Q2Physical review. EOA

Percolation is known as one of the most robust continuous transitions, because its occupation rule is intrinsically local. As one of the ways to break the robustness, occupation is allowed to more than one species of particles and they occupy cooperatively. This generalized percolation model undergoes a discontinuous transition. Here we investigate an epidemic model with two contagion steps and characterize its phase transition analytically and numerically. We find that even though the order par

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Light waves incident to a highly scattering medium are incapable of penetrating deep into the medium due to the multiple scattering process. This poses a fundamental limitation to optically imaging, sensing, and manipulating targets embedded in opaque scattering layers such as biological tissues. One strategy for mitigating the shallow wave penetration is to exploit eigenchannels with anomalously high transmittance existing in any scattering medium. However, finding such eigenchannels has been a

Absence of Anderson localization in certain random lattices

SJR Q2Physical review. EOA

We report on the transition between an Anderson localized regime and a conductive regime in a one-dimensional microwave scattering system with correlated disorder. We show experimentally that when long-range correlations are introduced, in the form of a power-law spectral density with power larger than 2, the localization length becomes much bigger than the sample size and the transmission peaks typical of an Anderson localized system merge into a pass band. As other forms of long-range correlat

Critical behavior of a two-step contagion model with multiple seeds
Wonjun Choi, Deokjae Lee, B. Kahng
SJR Q2Physical review. EOA

A two-step contagion model with a single seed serves as a cornerstone for understanding the critical behaviors and underlying mechanism of discontinuous percolation transitions induced by cascade dynamics. When the contagion spreads from a single seed, a cluster of infected and recovered nodes grows without any cluster merging process. However, when the contagion starts from multiple seeds of O(N) where N is the system size, a node weakened by a seed can be infected more easily when it is in con

Two golden times in two-step contagion models: A nonlinear map approach
Wonjun Choi, Deok‐Sun Lee, János Kertész, B. Kahng
SJR Q2Physical review. EOA

The two-step contagion model is a simple toy model for understanding pandemic outbreaks that occur in the real world. The model takes into account that a susceptible person either gets immediately infected or weakened when getting into contact with an infectious one. As the number of weakened people increases, they eventually can become infected in a short time period and a pandemic outbreak occurs. The time required to reach such a pandemic outbreak allows for intervention and is often called g

Surface plasmon polaritons have attracted broad attention in the optoelectronics field due to their ability to merge nanoscale electronics with high-speed optical communication. As the complexity of optoelectronic devices increases to meet various needs, this integration has been hampered by the low coupling efficiency of light to plasmonic modes. Here we present a method to maximize the coupling of far-field optical waves to plasmonic waves for arbitrarily complex devices. The method consists o
