Portfolio Selection Model for Enhancing Information Technology Synergy
Wooje Cho, Michael J. Shaw
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management

This paper presents a methodological framework for IT project selection that focuses on the impact of synergy enhancement on portfolio return and risk. As the size of firms' IT investments continues to increase, the demand for strong methodologies for IT portfolio selection has been increasing. Using the mean-variance efficient frontier as a tool to balance portfolio return and portfolio risk, we develop a model for IT portfolio selection. Unlike existing IT portfolio selection models, in this f

The Risk Implications of Mergers and Acquisitions with Information Technology Firms
Young Bong Chang, Wooje Cho
SJR Q1Journal of Management Information Systems

We address the dynamics of post-merger risks for a firm acquiring an information technology (IT) company over a long-term horizon, and examine the impact of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) motives on its post-merger risks after controlling for its self-selection into the specific motives the acquiring firm seeks. We find that a strong run-up in risk occurs before M&A transactions are initiated, but this risk begins to decline over the post-merger period. However, post-merger risks tend to persist

Students' evaluation of learning management systems in the personal computer and smartphone computing environments
Wooje Cho, Yoonhyuk Jung, Jin Hyouk Im
SJR Q4International Journal of Mobile Communications

The objective of this study is twofold: 1) to investigate an impact of software quality attributes of a learning management system (LMS) on students' satisfaction in both the personal computer and the smartphone settings; 2) to examine whether LMS quality factors have different impacts in the smartphone context and the PC context. We explore five quality attributes of LMS (capability, usability, performance, reliability and documentation). Data from a survey of 193 students were analysed using o

Does IT Synergy Matter in IT Portfolio Selection
Wooje Cho, Michael J. Shaw
SJR Q1Journal of the Association for Information Systems

This paper proposes a framework of IT portfolio selection and examines the impact of IT synergy on a firm’s IT portfolio selection. IT resources can be distinguished from other forms of resources by their great potential of enhancing synergy between IT units. Based on prior discussion on types of IT synergy, we classify IT synergy into three types and examine the effects of the different types of IT synergy on the IT portfolio selection. We found that firms of moderate and high risk tolerance

Advanced probabilistic design and reliability-based design optimization for composite sandwich structure
Seokje Lee, In-Gul Kim, Wooje Cho, Chang-Won Shul
SJR Q2Advanced Composite Materials

AbstractA composite sandwich structure can improve flexural rigidity and can decrease the weight of a composite laminated plate by 30%. However, it implies significant uncertainty within the construction process of its material properties when compared to other regular metals. Therefore, it is necessary to consider a probabilistic design method based on reliability. This paper calculated the probabilistic margin of safety of a simplified composite sandwich fuselage in order to examine that the c

Balancing the Strategic Value and the Operational Value in IT Portfolio Selection
Wooje Cho, Michael J. Shaw
SJR Q1Journal of the Association for Information Systems

This paper provides a methodological framework in which the problem of IT project portfolio selection is solved by balancing between operational and strategic IT investments. From interviews with CIOs, we found that the interest in IT projects in many firms tends to center on operational benefits, rather than strategic benefits. We examined the impact of strategic IT investments from an IT portfolio perspective. We applied an optimization model for the IT the portfolio selection and developed a

Need for Speed in the Sharing Economy: How IT capability drives Innovation Speed?
Wooje Cho, Ojaswi Malik, Prasanna Karhade, Abhishek Kathuria
Proceedings of the ... Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences/Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System SciencesOA

hough innovation is considered to be the lifeblood of business, speed of innovation is more critical than innovation itself. IT plays a critical role in the process of open innovation as it is based upon collaborating with suppliers and customers. IT enables increased collaboration and generation of insights across the firm’s partner network. We examine the role of IT-enabled capabilities in determining the speed of innovation. We hypothesize that collaboration with customers is more effective t

When Can AI Reduce Individuals’ Anchoring Bias and Enhance Decision Accuracy? Evidence from Multiple Longitudinal Experiments
Kyootai Lee, Han‐Gyun Woo, Wooje Cho, Simon De Jong
Proceedings of the ... Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences/Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System SciencesOA

This study aimed to identify and explain the mechanism underlying decision-making behaviors adaptive to AI advice. We develop a new theoretical framework by drawing on the anchoring effect and the literature on experiential learning. We focus on two factors: (1) the difference between individuals’ initial estimates and AI advice and (2) the existence of a second anchor (i.e., previous-year credit scores). We conducted two longitudinal experiments in the corporate credit rating context, where cor

The Role of Sense of Presence and Irritation in the Context of Mobile Social Network Sites
Jonghwa Park, Yoonhyuk Jung, Wooje Cho
SJR Q1ACM SIGMIS Database the DATABASE for Advances in Information Systems

While mobile social network sites (SNSs) function as a platform for social and self-communication that leads to sense of others and oneself, users may feel irritation derived from social interaction and technical frustration in using mobile SNSs. Because of the ubiquitous nature of mobile devices, sense of presence and irritation are more influential to users' satisfaction of mobile SNSs. This study investigates the influence of a sense of presence and irritation on users' satisfaction with mobi
