김욱 교수의 연구실은 미생물의 생태적 상호작용과 공동체 행동을 중심으로, 특히 생물막 형성과 표면에서의 군집 생장에서 나타나는 진화적 전략을 탐구합니다. 생물막이 경쟁에 의한 반응임을 밝혀내고, 표면에서의 공간 경쟁이 미생물의 유전자 발현과 행동에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지 실험적으로 규명합니다. 또한, 스웨이밍 모양의 세균 세포가 어떻게 집단적으로 이동하고, 내부 신호 분자인 사이클릭 디-글리코실레이트(c-di-GMP)가 분화와 분업 구조를 어떻게 조절하는지 메커니즘을 해명하고 있습니다. 이는 세균의 생존 전략과 병원성 메커니즘을 이해하는 데 핵심적입니다.

In this study, we carried out an evolutionary, transcriptional, and functional analyses of the trihelix transcription factor family. A total of 319 trihelix members, identified from 11 land plant species, were classified into five clades. Swarming behavior among 167 Salmonella sp. isolates, representing all eight groups, was assessed. Only eight strains failed to swarm under standard conditions. Four of the defective strains swarmed on alternate carbon sources, and four harbored general defects in motility or lipopolysaccharide. Thus, swarming may represent an evolutionarily conserved behavior in Salmonella spp.
