15We found that sonographically guided tendon sheath injections were more accurate and may be potentially safer than blind injections. These findings suggest that sonographically guided injections should be considered over blind injections when treating trigger finger.
The purpose of the present study was to test the potential of an MSC (mesenchymal stem cell)/PDO/PVA [polydioxanone/poly(vinyl alcohol)] hybrid scaffold construct to repair cartilage defects. For the in vitro study, MSCs were isolated from human bone marrow and cultured in PDO/PVA scaffolds for 4 weeks. Gross and microscopic examinations were performed, as well as RT-PCR (reverse-transcription PCR) analyses for cartilage-specific genes. For the in vivo study, MSCs isolated from rabbits were cult
BACKGROUND: Although the prevalence of rotator cuff tear (RCT) in the general population has been analyzed, little information is available on the status of the opposite-side rotator cuff in patients who have undergone arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To identify the characteristics of the contralateral shoulder and to identify factors associated with RCT of the contralateral shoulder in patients who underwent surgery for symptomatic RCT. The hypothesis was that the prevalen
BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the shoulder girdle muscle characteristics of elite archery athletes and provides suggestions for archery training programs.METHODS: This study enrolled 15 cases of high level archery athletes (7 males, 8 females) and 30 cases of (15 males, 15 females) sex, age-matched, healthy, non-athletic individuals. We measured peak torques of flexion (FL), extension (EX), abduction (ABD), adduction (ADD), external rotation (ER) and internal rotation (IR) of both shoulders a
BACKGROUND: The "ulnar bow sign" is a novel marker of plastic ulnar deformity with radial head dislocation. This sign is best assessed on true lateral radiographs. However, such radiographs are rarely obtained in routine clinical situations. Misdiagnosis can result from using suboptimum radiographs. The present study examined the clinical radiographs of normal forearms in children to identify factors that affect the assessment of ulnar bowing. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the lateral for
Synovial osteochondromatosis is an idiopathic benign metaplasia of the synovial membrane rarely found in an extra-articular bursa. We describe the case of a 55-year-old woman with synovial osteochondromatosis in the subacromial bursa mimicking calcific tendinitis. Plain radiographs showed a radiopaque mass over the middle facet of the greater tuberosity, suggesting calcific tendinitis. Sonography, however, showed a loose body in the subacromial bursa, and no evidence of calcification inside the
This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that growth factors can reduce the suppressive effect of titanium particles on MSCs. Cultured human MSCs at passage 3 were challenged with prepared cpTi particles at a concentration of 500 particles/cell along with one of the following growth factors: TGF-beta(1) (10 ng/mL), FGF-2 (10 ng/mL), IGF-I (100 ng/mL), and BMP-6 (50 ng/mL). After various periods of time, the treatment effects on cellular proliferation, viability, and osteogenic differentia
PURPOSE: To assess the effects of intravenous tranexamic acid (TXA) on visual clarity at various surgical stages and the correlation between the severity of synovitis and bursitis and the grade of visual clarity in patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery under an interscalene brachial plexus block. METHODS: This double-blind, randomized controlled study included patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. The TXA group underwent injection of a 100-mL mixture of 1,000 mg of TX
The present report describes a case of septic knee arthritis secondary to reactivated chronic osteomyelitis. The osteolytic lesion observed on the initial radiographs resulted in further imaging studies including CT and MRI, which confirmed the diagnosis. Based on the patient's history, physical findings and imaging studies, we performed open debridement rather than arthroscopic surgery in order to treat the infected intraarticular knee joint and ream the femur intramedullary canal. Additionally
