15Smads are signal transducers for members of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily. Upon ligand stimulation, receptor-regulated Smads (R-Smads) are phosphorylated by serine/threonine kinase receptors, form complexes with common-partner Smad, and translocate into the nucleus, where they regulate the transcription of target genes together with other transcription factors. Polyomavirus enhancer binding protein 2/core binding factor (PEBP2/CBF) is a transcription factor complex c
This study aimed to investigate the possible changes in anterior chest tightness after breast cancer surgery. We also try to investigate whether anterior chest tightness is associated with upper-limb dysfunction after breast cancer surgery. Eighty-three women who underwent breast cancer surgery were evaluated before and 2 weeks, 3 months, and 9 months after surgery. Anterior chest tightness was measured using the length of the pectoralis minor muscle through 2 methods (length from the coracoid p
To assess the effect of Cannabidiol (CBD) on the angiogenesis and stemness of breast cancer cells as well as proliferation. Methods: mRNA level and the amount of protein of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were determined by qRT-PCR and ELISA. The angiogenic potential of breast cancer cells under hypoxic conditions was identified by the HUVEC tube formation assay. The degradation of HIF-1α by CBD and the Src/von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor protein (VHL) interaction were assessed by a
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathological characteristics of uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) and possible prognostic factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 31 patients with histologically proven LMS at Samsung Medical Center and Ajou University Hospital between 1994 and 2007. The medical records and available histological slides were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: The median age was 46 years (range, 32~63). The most common symptom was vaginal bleeding (
PURPOSE: In secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT), it is unclear which criterion for intraoperative parathyroid hormone (ioPTH) decline performs best and whether ioPTH monitoring is sufficiently efficacious in predicting postoperative surgical cure by retrospective review. METHODS: In 80 parathyroidectomies for sHPT, patients with ioPTH monitoring and follow-up PTH assay were categorized into physiologically accepted and failed groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to i
AIM: The aim of this study was to assess various treatment options in stage IB2 cervical cancer patients. METHODS: Between January 1995 and May 2007, 63 patients with stage IB2 were treated by radical hysterectomy (n = 28), primary concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT, n = 16) or radiation therapy (RT, n = 19). Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were compared between these treatment modalities. RESULTS: The 3-year DFS of the surgical approach group was 67.5% compared to 70.3% of th
OBJECTIVE: To find out whether a negative finding on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can rule out bladder or rectum mucosal invasion safely without cystoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. STUDY DESIGN: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with cervical cancer between January 2005 and December 2009. MRI findings on bladder or rectum were classified as follows: (1) definite evidence of mucosal invasion, (2) suggestive of mucosal invasion or (3) no evidence of mucosal invasion. We corr
Parathyroidectomy was not an optimal procedure for achieving all the biochemical parameters recommended by the NKF-K/DOQI. Although it was helpful in attaining the recommended values for serum calcium and phosphate in SHPT patients resistant to medical therapy, the PTH levels did not fall within the recommended range.
Purpose: The National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (NKF-K/DOQI) 2003 has established guidelines for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in patients with chronic kidney disease -minerals and bone disorder (CKD-MBD). This study evaluated parathyroidectomy in SHPT patients for the achievement of the NKF-K/DOQI-recommended values of serum calcium, phosphate, and parathyroid hormone (PTH). Methods: Between January 2005 and December 2010, parathyroidec
The objective was to identify gene expression profile of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma. To help improve diagnosis of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma, we performed gene expression profiling and compared it to pair normal thyroid tissues. We performed microarray analysis with 6 papillary thyroid microcarcinoma and 6 pair normal thyroid tissues. Differentially expressed genes were selected using paired t test, linear models for microarray data, and significance analysis of microarrays. Real-tim
BACKGROUND: To identify a molecular marker associated with volumetric changes to radiotherapy (RT) in cervical cancer, we compared gene expression profiles of an early response (ER) group with a late response (LR) group, which are defined by complete and partial disappearance of a primary cervical lesion on MRI performed 1 month after completion of RT. METHODS: Microarray analysis of mRNA expression profiles was performed in 17 patients (11 in the ER and 6 in the LR group). After selection of th
