9Corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy hinges largely on the CEO characteristics in the context of an emerging market. Based on a sample of 16,144 firm-year observations obtained from 1,370 unique Chinese-listed firms, which whether voluntarily issue CSR reports over the period 2008-2019, this paper empirically examined the impact of CEO characteristics on the likelihood of issuing CSR reports. We find that CEO age, MBA education, international experience and political ideology conscious
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of technological diversification (TD) on enterprise innovation performance, meanwhile focusing on the moderating effects of various organizational slack (i.e. absorbed and unabsorbed slack) and ownership types (i.e. state-owned or privately-owned) in the context of Chinese listed firms. Design/methodology/approach This study formulates five hypotheses based on organization and agency theories. Our empirical analysis employs a fixed-effec
Purpose This study explores the contingent relationship between technological diversification (TD) and innovation performance, particularly in the context of China’s high-tech firms. It aims to understand how the structure of firm ownership influences the allocation of innovation resources and, consequently, the efficiency of innovation activities. Design/methodology/approach The research employs a fixed-effect regression model to analyze a unique panel dataset of 1,139 Chinese listed high-tech
The construction of a digital government is a significant initiative to modernize the national governance system and enhance governance capabilities, with the creation of public value focused on optimizing the supply level of basic public services within improved governance efficiency. This research begins with public value theory and technology empowerment theory to explain the theoretical mechanisms by which digital government can promote the supply level of basic public services. Utilizing pa
ABSTRACT In the rapidly advancing digital era, technological diversification (TD) emerges as a pivotal strategy to enhance firms' innovation performance. This study explores the nonlinear dynamics of TD and innovation performance, positing an inverted U‐shaped relationship and examining the moderating effects of governance mechanisms—management shareholding, board size, board meeting frequency, and analyst coverage—from the perspectives of incentive mechanism design, internal control, and extern
This study investigates whether, and under what conditions, the appointments of Chief Product Officer (CPO) influence firm value. Drawing on signaling theory and dynamic capability theory, we conduct an event study of 121 newly created CPO appointments in publicly listed U.S. firms from 2015 to 2023. Abnormal returns are estimated using the Fama-French Five-Factor model, with robustness checks from alternative specifications. On average, CPO announcements elicit neutral market reactions. However
With the rapidly increasing number of patent applications in China, each applicant tends to accumulate the quantity of patent, but not the improvement of patent quality. Therefore, the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) has recently issued a package of notification, which aims to reverse the status quo. However, existing methods of regional patent evaluation still emphasize on quantity rather than quality indices, which leads to biased evaluation results. In this paper, we establish a com
The role of entrepreneurial ecosystems in promoting entrepreneurial activity in rural regions remains underexplored. This paper examines how entrepreneurial ecosystems influence entrepreneurial activity in rural regions, using a configuration perspective of entrepreneurial ecosystem theory. We apply a hybrid method of Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) and Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) to 55 counties in Anhui Province, a representative agricultural region of China. The results reveal th
