15We investigated an outbreak caused by carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii carrying the bla(OXA-23) gene. A novel insertion sequence (IS), named ISAba10, was found to be inserted into the ISAba1 element preceding the bla(OXA-23) gene in a group of isolates showing higher carbapenem MICs. The presence of ISAba10 was associated with increased OXA-23 expression, likely by providing additional promoter sequences. ISAba10 was also inserted into the carO outer membrane protein gene in most of
This study was performed to determine the mechanisms for acquiring carbapenem resistance in six clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii. All isolates showed similar SmaI-macrorestriction patterns with less than 3 band differences by PFGE. The isolates showed a high level resistance (>32 mg/L) to both imipenem and meropenem by Etest. Phe-Arg-beta-naphthylamide lowered the MICs of carbapenems. Real-time PCR experiments showed that expression levels of the adeB gene in the six A. baumannii iso
We determined the antimicrobial susceptibilities of 255 clinical isolates of anaerobic bacteria collected in 2007 and 2008 at a tertiary-care hospital in South Korea. Piperacillin-tazobactam, cefoxitin, imipenem, and meropenem were highly active beta-lactam agents against most of the isolates tested. The rates of resistance of Bacteroides fragilis group organisms and anaerobic gram-positive cocci to moxifloxacin were 11 to 18% and 0 to 27%, respectively.
OBJECTIVES: to investigate the epidemiological traits of carbapenem-non-susceptible Acinetobacter baumannii (CNSAB) and the usefulness of phylogenetic grouping based on partial rpoB gene sequencing in defining the epidemiological traits of CNSAB. METHODS: a total of 547 non-duplicate clinical isolates of Acinetobacter spp. were collected from 19 hospitals in Korea in 2008. Detection of genes encoding OXA carbapenemases and metallo-β-lactamases was performed by PCR. The epidemiological relationsh
Piperacillin-tazobactam, cefoxitin, and carbapemems are highly active beta-lactam agents against most of the anaerobes. The resistance rates to moxifloxacin and tigecycline are slightly higher than those in the previous study.
We compared the activities of tedizolid to those of linezolid and other commonly used antimicrobial agents against gram-positive cocci recovered from patients with skin and skin structure infections (SSSIs) and hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in Korean hospitals. Gram-positive isolates were collected from 356 patients with SSSIs and 144 patients with HAP at eight hospitals in Korea from 2011 to 2014. SSSIs included impetigo, cellulitis, erysipelas, furuncles, abscesses, and infected burns. Ant
In general, higher resistance rates are observed among intensive care unit (ICU) isolates than non-ICU isolates. In this study, resistance rates of isolates from ICUs and non-ICUs were compared using the data generated from 20 hospitals in Korea. Methods: Susceptibility data were collected from 20 hospitals participating in the Korean Nationwide Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (KONSAR) program. Duplicate isolates were excluded from the analysis. The resistance rates did not include inte
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, with its accuracy and speed, is widely used for bacterial identification. The ASTA MicroIDSys system (ASTA, Korea) was recently developed for species identification. We compared its performance with that of Bruker Biotyper (Bruker Daltonics, Germany). Microbes were recovered from sputum, urine, and pus samples from patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital in Korea from January to April 2016. Matrix solution (α-cya
We investigated the molecular mechanisms of carbapenem resistance in clinical isolates of Enterobacter cloacae and their clinical characteristics. Nonreplicable E. cloacae isolates were recovered from six cancer patients and one patient with liver cirrhosis at a tertiary-care hospital in Korea between 2002 and 2009. Two patients who were considered to have a true infection caused by these microorganisms have died. All isolates produced AmpC β-lactamases, including ACT-1, ACT-2, MIR-3 and DHA-1,
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) such as Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are chronic relapsing inflammatory disorders of the intestine that are characterized by abdominal pain and diarrhea [1,2].The incidence of IBD is increasing globally and has also increased in Korea recently [2,3].Although the etiology is unknown, the relationship between the colonic microbiota and IBD has been indicated as a possible contributor.Fusobacterium varium and F. nucleatum have emerged as compel
BACKGROUND: We investigated the whole genome sequence (WGS) of a carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolate belonging to the global clone 2 (GC2) and predicted resistance islands using a software tool. METHODS: A. baumannii strain YU-R612 was isolated from the sputum of a 61-yr-old man with sepsis. The WGS of the YU-R612 strain was obtained by using the PacBio RS II Sequencing System (Pacific Biosciences Inc., USA). Antimicrobial resistance genes and resistance islands were analyzed by
Background: Periodic monitoring of regional or institutional resistance trends of clinically important anaerobic bacteria is recommended, because the resistance of anaerobic pathogens to antimicrobial drugs and inappropriate therapy are associated with poor clinical outcomes. There has been no multicenter study of clinical anaerobic isolates in Korea. We aimed to determine the antimicrobial resistance patterns of clinically important anaerobes at multiple centers in Korea. Methods: A total of 26
BACKGROUND: Cinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) recommends the use of cefoxitin disks instead of long-used oxacillin disks for screening methicillin-resistant isolates of staphylococci. The frequency of discrepant results and accuracy of the tests were evaluated by detecting mecA gene. METHODS: A total of 3,123 Stapylococci isolates from patients in Severance Hospital were tested during September 2005 to August 2006 by the CLSI-recommended test using both cefoxitin and oxacillin di
