15PURPOSE: The chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) assessment test (CAT) is widely used to assess the impact of COPD symptoms on health status. Whilst the CAT consists of eight different items, details on the distribution of each item are limited. This study aimed to investigate the distribution and clinical implication of each CAT item, stratified by CAT severity group, in stable COPD patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study at a single referral hospital in South
Genomic alterations are associated with clinicoradiopathologic features in patients with resected lung adenocarcinoma. Identifying genomic alterations could help to predict the prognosis of early-stage lung adenocarcinoma.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate cumulative incidence and risk factors associated with chronic pulmonary infection (CPI) development after radiotherapy for lung cancer. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 1,872 patients with lung cancer who received radiotherapy for lung cancer from 2010-2014, had a follow-up period of ≥ 3 months after radiotherapy, and did not have CPI at the time of radiotherapy. CPI was defined as pulmonary tuberculosis, non-tuberculous mycobacterial pu
Background: Limited data are available regarding the detailed characteristics and outcomes of surgically resected nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) granulomas. Methods: We evaluated the characteristics of 49 NTM granulomas presenting as solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs) between January 2007 and December 2016. Results: Twenty-five patients (51%) were male and 27 (55%) were never-smokers. Seven (14%) patients had a history of tuberculosis. More than half (51%) of patients were asymptomatic. On ch
BACKGROUND: To determine which components should be measured and which window settings are appropriate for computerized tomography (CT) size measurements of lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) and to explore interobserver agreement and accuracy according to the eighth edition of TNM staging. METHODS: A total of 165 patients with surgically resected lung ADC earlier than stage 3A were included in this study. One radiologist and two pulmonologists independently measured the total and solid sizes of componen
Parametric response mapping (PRM) on computed tomography (CT) is an imaging technique for assessing small airway disease (SAD) and emphysema in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study was aimed to examine the relationship between individual spirometry components decline and PRM-CT-derived data changes over a 6-year observation period in mild and moderate COPD patients using a COPD cohort chronically exposed to dust. This study utilized longitudinal data of the COPD in Dusty Area
Granulomas caused by nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) pulmonary infections can present as solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs) mimicking pulmonary malignancies or other infectious granulomas. However, limited data are available regarding the detailed characteristics and outcomes of surgically resected NTM granulomas. We evaluated the characteristics of 49 surgically resected NTM granulomas presenting as SPNs of 49 patients between January 2007 and December 2016. Twenty-five (51%) were male and 27
Unilateral pulmonary artery agenesis (UPAA) is a rare congenital anomaly which can be symptomatic or even asymptomatic. Most of patients with isolated UPAA have mild symptoms and it is difficult to be diagnosed, especially when abnormal findings of chest radiograph are the first presentation. It is often misdiagnosed and is not considered during differential diagnosis. To make a diagnosis of UPAA, various imaging modalities including chest radiograph, computed tomography (CT), and angiography ar
Bronchiectasis patients with CAO could benefit more from long-term azithromycin treatment than COPD patients without bronchiectasis.
Thoracolithiasis is a rare benign condition with mobile free bodies in the pleural cavity. It is asymptomatic and mostly found incidentally. Up to our knowledge there is no report of symptomatic numerous thoracolithiasis. We report a very rare case of thoracolithiasis in a 36-year-old female with chest discomfort. Images from computed tomography presented a chain of small non-enhancing nodules in the left hemi-diaphragmatic pleura. Exploratory thoracoscopy was performed and twenty-five mobile pe
There is limited evidence regarding the causal inference of emphysema and functional small airway disease in the subsequent progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Patients consisting of two independent cohorts diagnosed with COPD and underwent two serial chest CT scans were included. Total percent emphysema (PRM Emph ) and fSAD (PRM fSAD ) was quantified via PRM. To investigate the progression of emphysema, we divided COPD patients with PRM Emph < 10% into low and high PRM
Inhaler therapy and physical activity (PA) are important methods of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management. This study aimed to investigate the additional benefit of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) in patients with COPD using a long-acting beta-agonists (LABA)/long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) combination. We emulated a target trial to estimate the benefit of MVPA in patients with COPD using a dual ultra-long-acting bronchodilators. We enrolled patients aged ≥ 40 who were
than NHW and AA (56.3% and 54.6%, P <0.01). The average body mass index (BMI) of NHW and AA was similar (27.9 kg/m2 for both), but Koreans had significantly lower BMI (22.4 kg/m2, P <0.01). SGRQ total score was highest among AA (40.1.), followed by NHW (35.9), and Koreans (35.3, P <0.01). Compared to NHW, AA and Koreans had significantly increased adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) of diabetes mellitus (1.63 and 1.58) and decreased aPRs of dyslipidaemia (0.80 and 0.23), gastro-oesophageal reflux
Background: This study aimed to investigate the role of 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in treatment response assessment of nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD). Methods: We evaluated 26 patients with NTM-PD who underwent NTM-PD treatment and serial 18F-FDG PET/CT at baseline and 6 and 12 months after treatment.
