Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy for Recurrent Disc Herniation: Surgical Technique, Outcome, and Prognostic Factors of 43 Consecutive Cases
Yong Ahn, Sang‐Ho Lee, Woo-Min Park, Ho-Yeon Lee, Song-Woo Shin, Ho-Yeong Kang
SJR Q1Spine

Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy is effective for recurrent disc herniation in selected cases. The posterolateral approach through unscarred virgin tissue can prevent nerve injury and could preserve the spinal stability. Both foraminal and intracanalicular portions can be decompressed simultaneously.

Transforaminal percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy: technical tips to prevent complications
Yong Ahn
SJR Q2Expert Review of Medical Devices

Transforaminal percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy is regarded as an effective alternative to open discectomy. Remarkable technical evolution now enables selective endoscopic removal of an epidurally extruded disc fragment. As a result, the surgical indications for this technique are becoming broader. However, as the use of endoscopic techniques increases in spinal procedures, related complications emerge as important problems. These include postoperative dysesthesia, dural tears, hematoma

Percutaneous endoscopic decompression for lumbar spinal stenosis
Yong Ahn
SJR Q2Expert Review of Medical Devices

Percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy has become a representative minimally invasive spine surgery for lumbar disc herniation. Due to the remarkable evolution in the techniques available, the paradigm of spinal endoscopy is shifting from treatments of soft disc herniation to those of lumbar spinal stenosis. Lumbar spinal stenosis can be classified into three categories according to pathological zone as follows: central stenosis, lateral recess stenosis and foraminal stenosis. Moreover, percu

SJR Q1NeurosurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: Although several authors have reported the use of endoscopic techniques to treat lumbar foraminal stenosis, the practical application of these techniques has been limited to soft disc herniation. OBJECTIVE: To describe the details of the percutaneous endoscopic lumbar foraminotomy (ELF) technique for bony foraminal stenosis and to demonstrate the clinical outcomes. METHODS: Two years of prospective data were collected from 33 consecutive patients with lumbar foraminal stenosis who un

Although the current level of evidence is low and the technical relevance of the technique is controversial, the key concept and early results of endoscopic TLIF are promising. Technical advancements to improve safety and reduce technical complexity, as well as comparative cohort studies and randomized clinical trials with long-term follow-up are required to promote the adoption of endoscopic TLIF in clinical practice.

Radiation Exposure to the Surgeon During Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy
Yong Ahn, Chang‐Ho Kim, Jun Ho Lee, Sang-Ho Lee, Jin Sung Kim
SJR Q1Spine

Without radiation shielding, a surgeon performing 291 PELDs annually would be exposed to the maximum allowable radiation dose. Given the measurable lifetime radiation hazards to the surgeon, the use of adequate protective equipment is essential to reducing exposure during PELD.

Posterolateral percutaneous endoscopic lumbar foraminotomy for L5—S1 foraminal or lateral exit zone stenosis
Yong Ahn, Sang‐Ho Lee, Woo-Min Park, Ho-Yeon Lee
SJR Q1Journal of Neurosurgery Spine

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy and feasibility of posterolateral percutaneous endoscopic lumbar foraminotomy (PELF) for foraminal or lateral exit zone stenosis of the L5-S1 level in the awake patient. Twelve consecutive patients with L5-S1 foraminal stenosis and associated leg pain underwent PELF between May 2001 and July 2002. Under fluoroscopic guidance, posterolateral endoscopic foraminal decompression was performed using a bone reamer, endoscopic forceps, and a laser

Predictive factors for subsequent vertebral fracture after percutaneous vertebroplasty
Yong Ahn, June Ho Lee, Hoyeon Lee, Sang‐Ho Lee, Sang-Hyun Keem
SJR Q1Journal of Neurosurgery Spine

OBJECT: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the predictive factors for subsequent vertebral fracture occurring after percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) at the neighboring levels (adjacent vs nonadjacent levels). METHODS: The medical records of 508 consecutive patients treated with PVP between January 2000 and December 2002 were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 45 patients with 49 painful vertebral fractures occurring after PVP was identified based on clinical and radiological findings.

Current techniques of endoscopic decompression in spine surgery
Yong Ahn
Annals of Translational MedicineOA

Endoscopic spine surgery has become a practical, minimally invasive technique for decompression in patients with spinal disc herniation or stenosis. This review aimed to summarize the current techniques of endoscopic decompression technique in spine surgery and to discuss the benefits, limitations, and future perspectives of this minimally invasive technique. Endoscopic spine decompression surgery can be categorized according to the endoscopic property: percutaneous endoscopic (full-endoscopic),

OBJECT: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the clinical characteristics of postoperative retroperitoneal hematoma (RPH) following transforaminal percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) and to discuss how to prevent the complication of unintended hemorrhage. METHODS: The medical records of 412 consecutive patients treated with transforaminal PELD between January 2005 and May 2007 were reviewed. A total of 4 patients (0.97%) experienced symptomatic postoperative RPH. The clinica

BACKGROUND DATA: Percutaneous disc decompression using a laser and/or microforceps for cervical disc herniation has been regarded as an effective treatment modality in selected cases. However, the postoperative radiographic changes have not yet been evaluated. METHODS: We reviewed the clinical
