15These results suggested that routine measurement of serum calcitonin is useful in the early detection of MTC among patients with nodular thyroid diseases. Pentagastrin stimulation test may also be a reliable way for evaluating thyroid nodular patients with mild or moderate elevation of serum calcitonin concentrations. However, FNAC was not sensitive in detecting MTC. We recommend routine measurement of serum calcitonin concentration in patients with nodular thyroid diseases.
OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that excess weight increases the risk of thyroid cancer. However, the associations between excess weight and prognostic factors for thyroid cancer are uncertain. We evaluated the relationships between body mass index (BMI) and clinico-pathological features and outcomes of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 2057 patients with PTC was performed. Patients were grouped according to BMI (underweight, nor
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are a nuclear hormone receptor superfamily of ligand-activated transcription factors, and the PPARgamma subtype regulates adipocyte differentiation, lipid metabolism, and insulin sensitivity. There have been several reports on the relationship between the PPARgamma2 Pro12Ala genotype and obesity or diabetes in Caucasians. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between this mutation and obesity or diabetes in Korean subjects
OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM) on perinatal outcome in a setting where influences of maternal age and obesity would be minimal. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A case-control study was done to compare the outcome of pregnancy in 65 women with GDM and 153 women with normal carbohydrate metabolism matched for age, height, and prepregnancy weight. RESULTS: The frequencies of preeclampsia and primary cesarean sections were higher and delivery was earlier in pregn
OBJECTIVE: Although papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) has a favourable long-term prognosis, disease recurrence after initial treatment remains a problem and controversy exists regarding the role of radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation in PTMC. We performed this study to evaluate the effect of RAI ablation on disease recurrence in patients with PTMC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1994 and 2004, 2579 patients underwent thyroid surgery for thyroid cancer at Samsung Medical Center. Among these pa
Although many studies have reported an association between total white blood cell count and metabolic syndrome, relatively few reports are available on the association between differential white blood cell counts and metabolic syndrome. The medical records of 15,654 subjects (age, median 46, range 14-90 yr; 8,380 men and 7,274 women) who visited the Center for Health Promotion were investigated. It was found that as total white blood cell (WBC) and differential WBC counts increased the frequenci
Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is an important factor in bone metabolism, and its actions may be mediated in part via prostaglandins. Prostaglandin G/H synthase (PGHS), a critical enzyme in the synthesis of prostaglandins, has two isoforms, PGHS-1, which is generally constitutively expressed, and PGHS-2, which is inducible. This study examines the effects of IL-1 on PGHS-2 mRNA expression in human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells, the human osteoblast-like initial transfectant (HOBIT) cell line, and primary human
Denosumab, a fully human recombinant monoclonal antibody to the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL), blocks binding of RANKL to the RANK receptor, found on the surface of osteoclasts and osteoclast precursors, resulting in decreased bone resorption. Subcutaneous denosumab administration once every 6 months increases bone mineral density at the lumbar spine, total hip, and/or femoral neck, and reduces markers of bone turnover significantly in postmenopausal women with osteoporo
