15OBJECTIVES: To investigate lymph node (LN) metastasis according to tumour location and assess the impact of lobe-specific LN dissection on survival in stage IA non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the data of patients with clinical stage IA NSCLC treated with lobectomy and systematic LN dissection at Asan Medical Center (Seoul, Korea) between June 2005 and April 2017. Patients who received neoadjuvant therapy had multiple primary tumours or missed the follow-u
BACKGROUND Recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after liver transplantation (LT) results in poor survival outcome. This study assessed the clinical outcomes of pulmonary metastasectomy in LT recipients with pulmonary metastasis of HCC in a high-volume transplant center and analyzed factors prognostic of survival following metastasectomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study analyzed outcomes in 52 patients who underwent pulmonary resection due to pulmonary metastasis as the first recurrence o
The first LT was performed in June 1963 by Hardy of the University of Mississippi (1), and LT has since become the main treatment for end-stage lung disease. The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) reported 4,452 LTs performed in 2017, globally (2). In Korea, the first LT was performed in 1996 (3) at Severance Hospital; the patient underwent a single lung transplant to treat pulmonary fibrosis, but died 82 days later because of infection (3). The number of LTs did no
Fifty procedures might be needed to achieve early proficiency, and extensive experience of more than 150 procedures is needed for quality stabilization.
BACKGROUND: Lung transplantation is a life-saving procedure in patients with end-stage lung disease, and is increasingly performed in Korea. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the outcomes of patients who received a lung transplant at Asan Medical Center between January 2008 and December 2016. Thirteen of 54 patients experienced multiorgan transplantation; the remaining 41 who received only lung grafts were included. RESULTS: The mean age of the lung transplant recipients was 44.6 years; 27 w
Background: Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) has traditionally been used as a biomarker to predict neurologic outcomes after cardiac arrest. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of NSE in predicting neurologic outcomes in patients undergoing extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR). Methods: This observational cohort study included 47 consecutive adult ECPR patients (median age, 59.0 years; 74.5% males) treated between January 2018 and December 2021 at a tertiary extracorporeal life
Ventilation SPECT/CT was comparable to perfusion SPECT/CT in predicting postoperative lung function.
A 76-day-old infant weighing 3.4 kg was referred for surgical intervention for severe mitral valve stenoinsufficiency caused by leaflet fibrosis and calcification. He had experienced a cerebral infarction in the left middle cerebral artery territory, which was deemed attributable to an embolism of a calcified particle from the dysmorphic mitral valve. Because mitral valve replacement using a prosthetic valve was not feasible in this small baby, mitral valve replacement with a pulmonary autograft
RLN paralysis following oesophagectomy in oesophageal carcinoma is a predictable complication. In patients with RLN paralysis, early detection and intervention through multidisciplinary cooperation are required, and the incidence of postoperative complications can be reduced by implementing the appropriate management.
Purpose Bone metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can present with soft tissue formation, resulting in oncologic emergency. Contrast-enhanced FDG PET/CT and bone scintigraphy were compared to evaluate characteristics of bone metastases with or without soft tissue formation from HCC. Methods Of 4,151 patients with HCC, 263 patients had bone metastases. Eighty-five patients with bone metastasis from HCC underwent contrast-enhanced FDG PET/CT. Fifty-four of the enrolled subjects had recen
Background: Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) has the potential to improve neurological outcomes in patients with refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), offering an alternative to conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CCPR). However, its effectiveness in OHCA remains controversial despite advancements in resuscitation techniques. Methods: This retrospective single-center study compared neurological outcomes and 30-day survival between ECPR and CCPR patients fro
Oncogenic osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by renal phosphate excretion, hypophosphatemia, and osteomalacia. This syndrome is often caused by tumors of mesenchymal origin. Patients with oncogenic osteomalacia have abnormal bone mineralization, resulting in a high frequency of fractures. Tumor resection is the treatment of choice, as it will often correct the metabolic imbalance. Although oncogenic osteomalacia is a potentially curable disease, diagnosis is difficult and
Abstract Objectives We evaluate the surgical outcome of clinically single-zone N2 lung cancer limited to aortopulmonary zone (AP zone; lymph node #5 or #6). Patients and Methods We performed a retrospective analysis of patients with non-small cell lung cancer, in whom mediastinal lymph node metastasis was confined to AP zone. Results A total of 84 patients who underwent upfront surgery were included in final analysis. Among these patients, pathological nodal outcomes were pN0–1 in 27 patients (3
