SJR Q2MetabolitesOA

Mitochondria are highly dynamic cellular organelles that perform crucial functions such as respiration, energy production, metabolism, and cell fate decisions. Mitochondrial damage and dysfunction critically lead to the pathogenesis of various diseases including cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disorders. Mitochondrial damage in response to environmental contaminant exposure and its association with the pathogenesis of diseases has also been reported. Recently, persiste

SJR Q2Journal of Cellular Biochemistry

Fisetin is a natural flavonoid from fruits and vegetables that exhibits antioxidant, neurotrophic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects in various disease models. Up-regulation of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression protects against oxidative stress-induced cell death, and therefore, plays a crucial role in cytoprotection in a variety of pathological models. In the present study, we investigated the effect of fisetin on the up-regulation of HO-1 in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HU

MicroRNA and gene expression analysis of melatonin-exposed human breast cancer cell lines indicating involvement of the anticancer effect

SJR Q1Journal of Pineal Research

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, noncoding RNAs that play a crucial role in regulation of gene expression. Recent studies have shown that miRNAs implicated in initiation and progression of various human cancers, including breast cancer and also analysis of miRNA expression profiles in cancer provide new insights into potential mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Melatonin, N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, is synthesized by the pineal gland in response to the dark/light cycle and has been known to act as a s

OBJECTIVE: Acrolein, a known toxin in tobacco smoke, might be involved in atherogenesis. This study examined the effect of acrolein on expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and prostaglandin (PG) production in endothelial cells. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 induction by acrolein and signal pathways were measured using Western blots, Northern blots, immunofluorescence, ELISA, gene silencing, and promoter assay. Colocalization of COX2 and acrolein-adduct was determined by immunohis

Methylglyoxal (MG), a physiological alpha-dicarbonyl compound is derived from glycolytic intermediates and produced during the Maillard reaction. The Maillard reaction, a non-enzymatic reaction of ketones and aldehydes with amino group of proteins, contributes to the aging of proteins and to complications associated with diabetes. In our previous studies (Che, et al. (1997) "Selective induction of heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor by MG and 3-deoxyglucosone in rat aortic

Eriodictyol Protects Endothelial Cells against Oxidative Stress-Induced Cell Death through Modulating ERK/Nrf2/ARE-Dependent Heme Oxygenase-1 Expression

SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

The pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases is complex and may involve oxidative stress-related pathways. Eriodictyol is a flavonoid present in citrus fruits that demonstrates anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, neurotrophic, and antioxidant effects in a range of pathophysiological conditions including vascular diseases. Because oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, the present study was designed to verify whether eriodictyol has therapeutic potential. U

Acrolein Induces Inflammatory Response Underlying Endothelial Dysfunction
Yong Seek Park, Naoyuki Taniguchi
SJR Q1Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences

Endothelial dysfunction by proinflammatory stimuli represents an important link between risk factors and the pathologic mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis. Thus, control of the inflammatory status of endothelial cells is crucial to limiting the disease. Tobacco smoking induces inflammatory reactions and promotes atherosclerosis; however, the mechanism that links cigarette smoking to an increased incidence of atherosclerosis is poorly understood. Our study demonstrates that acrolein, a known t

Epigenetic alterations have emerged as an important mechanism involved in tumorigenesis. The epigenetic impact of DNA methylation in various types of human cancer is not completely understood. Previously, we observed melatonin-induced differential expression of miRNA and miRNA-related genes in human breast cancer cell lines that indicated an anticancer effect of melatonin. In this report, we further characterized epigenetic changes in melatonin-exposed MCF-7 cells through the analysis of DNA met

Role of Lipid Peroxidation-Derivedα,β-Unsaturated Aldehydes in Vascular Dysfunction
Seung Eun Lee, Yong Seek Park
SJR Q1Oxidative Medicine and Cellular LongevityOA

Vascular diseases are the most prominent cause of death, and inflammation and vascular dysfunction are key initiators of the pathophysiology of vascular disease. Lipid peroxidation products, such as acrolein and other α, β-unsaturated aldehydes, have been implicated as mediators of inflammation and vascular dysfunction. α, β-Unsaturated aldehydes are toxic because of their high reactivity with nucleophiles and their ability to form protein and DNA adducts without prior metabolic activation. This
