was most highly correlated with the CAT activity, indicating an increased role of CAT in hydrogen peroxide detoxification under salinity stress. In addition, the results suggest the significance of temporal and spatial regulation of each antioxidant isoform in determining the competence of the antioxidant capacity under saline stress.

Development of gene‐based markers for the identification of wheat‐rye translocations possessing 1RS
YJ Lee, YW Seo
SJR Q2New Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural ScienceOA

Wheat‐rye translocations carry valuable genes for pest resistance; this has led to their incorporation into wheat varieties. To develop gene‐based 1RS specific markers, expressed sequence tags (ESTs) mapped to the short arm of wheat homoeologous group 1 were downloaded from a public database. ESTs and mature transcript sequences of nine species from the Poaceae family were BLASTed to perform comparative analysis. ESTs selected using the BLAST tool were used for primer design. The target sequence

cDNA-AFLP analysis reveals differential gene expression in response to salt stress in Brachypodium distachyon
김대연, 홍민정, 장지희, 서용원

Environmental stresses such as drought, salinity, cold, and heat negatively affect the growth of plants and productivity of crops. The mechanism of salt tolerance is one of the most important fields in plant science, and our understanding of this process must be improved in order to increase agricultural crop production. In our study, we identified salt stress-responsive transcripts using the cDNA-AFLP technique. The obtained transcripts were further analyzed by semi-quantitative reverse transcr

Agronomic characteristics and grain properties of Korean wheat of 175 farmers in nationwide for two years, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, were evaluated to support basic data for improving grain quality of Korean wheat and enhancing Korean wheat consumption. Agronomic characteristics, including culm length, spike length, number of spike/m 2and rate of off-type plant, and grain properties, including 1000 kernel weight, test weight, moisture, ash and protein content, were influenced by year and location.

Molecular characterization of the AtCXE8 gene, which promotes resistance to Botrytis cinerea infection
이상협, 황성빈, 서용원, 전웅배, 오병준

The relationships of sterase- and lipase-like proteins with three signaling molecules (salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, and ethylene) expressed during plant– pathogen interactions were studied. We isolated two carboxylesterase (AtCXE) genes, AtCXE8 and AtCXE9, from Arabidopsis thaliana. The AtCXE8 and AtCXE9 proteins possess carboxylesterase motifs (-GXSXG-) and catalytic triads (Ser, Asp, and His). We demonstrated that recombinant AtCXE8 and AtCXE9 proteins have both enzymatic activity and specif

Characteristics of Endosperm Starch of the Rice Mutant Lines Induced by Sodium Azide
신영섭, 서용원, 박철수, 정지웅

Rice consumption per capta, in South Korea, has been decreased dramatically, owing to the changes of living patterns. Because of not only the major energy source of Korean people but also major income source of Korean farmers, diversifying end-use-quality of rice has been demanded. To the context, ‘Suweon 472’, a high yielding and early mature japonica line and released as ‘Namilbyeo’ to framers in 2002, was treated with a chemical mutagen, Sodium Azide to find endosperm mutant types. A total of

Antioxidant Activity and Total Phenolic Compounds in Grain Extracts of Wheat, Barley, and Oat
김동섭, 허화영, 서용원, SoYoungBu, WoongBaeJeon

Cereal grains are rich in phenolic compounds that give beneficial effect in human health. Although several research works have been reported on the effects of phytochemicals of plant origin, such as fruits, vegetables, few studies have examined the antioxidative effects of whole cereal grains. The objective of this study was to determine total antioxidant capacity of 80% ethanolic extracts of cereal grains by testing the ability of the extracts to inhibit UV -induced lipid peroxidation in vitro

A genome-wide analysis of transcripts in a 2BS.2RL wheat-rye translocation during Hessian fly infestation
이동건, 김대연, Jerry W. Johnson, 서용원

The Hessian fly [Mayetiola destructor (Say)]biotype L is the most damaging pest to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The long arm of rye chromosome 2 (2RL) has been transferred to common wheat, in the form of 2BS.2RL wheat-rye translocations. 2RL carries gene(s) for resistance to Hessian fly (biotype L), representing a promising target for engineered resistance. The objective of this study was to examine changes in gene expression in near-isogenic lines (NILs) differing by the presence (resistant NI

Effective Selection of Soybean Cultivars to Wildfire Disease Pathogen Pseudomonas amygdali pv. tabaci
In Jeong Kang, Seung-Han Kim, 서용원, 서민정, 심형권, Dong Bum Shin, Sunggi Heu

Wildfire, caused by Pseudomonas amygdali pv. tabaci is one of the most destructive bacterial diseases and was recognized as a disease of soybean in 1943. Wildfire has been seen a steady increase in the incidence and prevalence on some cultivars of soybean in Korea by climatic changes but there is little information on effective control measures for wildfire or soybean varieties showing complete resistance to the disease. In this study, the efficient and reliable screening method to evaluate soyb

Fusarium head blight (FHB), also known as scab, caused mainly by Fusarium graminearum is a devastating disease of wheat in regions that are warm and humid during flowering. In addition to significant yield and quality losses, the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol produced by the pathogen in infected wheat kernels is a serious problem for food and feed safety. Twenty- three Korean cultivars and “Sumai 3”, which is a FHB-resistant Chinese cultivar were tested for Type I, Type II resistances of FHB. Three c

Common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and durum wheat (T. turgidum L. subsp. Durum) are major staple food crops inthe world. However, their production are limited by environmental stress such as drought. In order to evaluate wheat’s response todrought, a total of 77 common wheat and durum wheat consisted of 19 Korean common wheat, 30 Tunisian common wheat and 28Tunisian durum wheat were used in this study. Drought stress was applied for 21 days by suspending water application starting at thethird

Overexpression of BdASR2 Plays a Positive Role in Response to Salt Tolerance in Brachypodium distachyon
Yoon Jin Seok, Calderon Flores Pau lina, 서용원

Adverse environmental stresses are known to affect plant growth and development, thus reducing crop productivity. Abscisic acid-, stress -, and ripening-induced (ASR) proteins play important roles in protecting plants from adverse environmental conditions. However, the biological functions of ASR proteins in Brachypodium remain unclear. We characterized the Brachypodium BdASR2 gene and concluded that it plays a positive role in salt stress tolerance. Overexpressing BdASR2 plants showed enhanced

Identification of gamma irradiated Brachypodium mutants with altered genes responsible for lignin biosynthesis
이만보, 서용원, 김대연, 홍민정, 이용진

Brachypodium distachyon (Brachypodium) is anovel model plant for structural and functional genomicstudies of Poaceae. Brachypodium has many favorable features, such as small size, small genome, short life cycle, andeasy handling. Bioethanol, as renewable resource, has beenwidely studied as a replacement for fossil fuels. Lignin isinvolved with the efficiency of energy feedstock. It is generallyaccepted that bioethanol production is negativelyaffected by lignin content. Brachypodium was irradiated
