15Using Brownian dynamics simulations, we investigate the pumping efficiency of an array of periodically beating semiflexible filaments that are grafted to a surface. We study the effect of dumbbell-like counterions on the interactions between similarly charged surfaces. Via a systematic study using Monte Carlo simulations and field theory, we fully consider electrostatic correlations and ion structure and find that their intricate coupling determines the equilibrium phase behaviors. In particular, an energetic bridging mechanism is revealed to cause surface attractions for a finite range of surface separations, even in the Poisson-Boltzmann limit.

The phenomena resulting from interaction between polymers and membranes pose important problems for biological applications. Based on a scaling theory, we investigate the spontaneous curvature of a membrane induced by either flexible or semiflexible chain adsorption. Irrespective of chain stiffness, a weakly adsorbed polymer induces the membrane to bend away (to have a positive curvature) from the polymer mostly due to increase of the conformational entropy compared with that for a flat surface.
The possibility of observing stochastic resonance (SR) in a periodic potential without a static bias, driven by noise and an oscillating field, is investigated in both limits of damping. Based on the two state model, we study the condensation of counterions on oppositely charged membranes in the presence of monovalent salts. Using the Gaussian approximation, we evaluate the contribution of two-dimensional charge fluctuation to the free energy, from which the number of condensed counterions is determined self-consistently.
