Mutagenicity and Lung Toxicity of Smoldering vs. Flaming Emissions from Various Biomass Fuels: Implications for Health Effects from Wildland Fires
Yong Ho Kim, Sarah H. Warren, Q. Todd Krantz, Charly King, Richard H. Jaskot, William Preston, Barbara Jane George, Michael D. Hays, Matthew S. Landis, Mark Higuchi, David M. DeMarini, M. Ian Gilmour
SJR Q1Environmental Health PerspectivesOA

BACKGROUND: The increasing size and frequency of wildland fires are leading to greater potential for cardiopulmonary disease and cancer in exposed populations; however, little is known about how the types of fuel and combustion phases affect these adverse outcomes. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the mutagenicity and lung toxicity of particulate matter (PM) from flaming vs. smoldering phases of five biomass fuels, and compared results by equal mass or emission factors (EFs) derived from amount of fuel

SJR Q1Science

There is a general need for the engineering of protein-like molecules that organize into geometrically specific superstructures on molecular surfaces, directing further functionalization to create richly textured, multilayered assemblies. Here we describe a computational approach whereby the surface properties and symmetry of a targeted surface define the sequence and superstructure of surface-organizing peptides. Computational design proceeds in a series of steps that encode both surface recogn

Sterically Induced Shape and Crystalline Phase Control of GaP Nanocrystals

SJR Q1Journal of the American Chemical Society

We demonstrate a novel synthetic scheme that can be used to control the crystalline phase and shape of GaP semiconductor nanocrystals. Our study shows that steric effects of surfactant ligands can modulate the crystalline phases and control the shapes of nanocrystals. The shape of the nanocrystals obtained varies from zero-dimensional spheres to one-dimensional rods via controlling the ratio between primary and tertiary alkylamines. III-V semiconductors (in our case: GaP) under 10 nm in width ar

Distinct CpG island methylation profiles and BRAF mutation status in serrated and adenomatous colorectal polyps
Yong Ho Kim, Sanjay Kakar, Lisa Cun, Guoren Deng, Young S. Kim
SJR Q1International Journal of CancerOA

A subset of colorectal cancers with CpG island methylator phenotype-high (CIMP-H) is frequently associated with MSI and BRAF V600E mutation. Since limited data are available on different histological types of colorectal polyps, we compared the pattern and the frequency of promoter methylation, CIMP-H, MSI, KRAS and BRAF V600E mutations and the relationship among these molecular parameters and the clinicopathologic characteristics in 110 serrated polyps (48 hyperplastic polyps, 32 sessile serrate

RATIONALE: Although inhalation of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) is known to cause systemic disease (i.e., metal fume fever), little is known about mechanisms underlying injury to alveolar epithelium. OBJECTIVES: Investigate ZnO NP-induced injury to alveolar epithelium by exposing primary cultured rat alveolar epithelial cell monolayers (RAECMs) to ZnO NPs. METHODS: RAECMs were exposed apically to ZnO NPs or, in some experiments, to culture fluid containing ZnCl₂ or free Zn released from Z

Hydrophobic Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Coating of Mesoporous Silica and Its Use as a Preconcentrating Agent of Gas Analytes

SJR Q1Langmuir

Mesoporous silica with mean pore size of ∼14 nm was coated by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using a thermal deposition method. We showed that the inner walls of pores larger than ∼8 nm can be coated by thin layers of PDMS, and the surfaces consisting of PDMS-coated silica were superhydrophobic, with water contact angles close to 170°. We used the PDMS-coated silica as adsorbents of various gas-phase chemical warfare agent (CWA) simulants. PDMS-coated silica allowed molecular desorption of various

BACKGROUND: Emissions from a large peat fire in North Carolina in 2008 were associated with increased hospital admissions for asthma and the rate of heart failure in the exposed population. Peat fires often produce larger amounts of smoke and last longer than forest fires, however few studies have reported on their toxicity. Moreover, reliable alternatives to traditional animal toxicity testing are needed to reduce the number of animals required for hazard identification and risk assessments. ME

BACKGROUND: Open burning of anthropogenic sources can release hazardous emissions and has been associated with increased prevalence of cardiopulmonary health outcomes. Exposure to smoke emitted from burn pits in military bases has been linked with respiratory illness among military and civilian personnel returning from war zones. Although the composition of the materials being burned is well studied, the resulting chemistry and potential toxicity of the emissions are not. METHODS: Smoke emission

The translation of high-throughput gene expression data into biologically meaningful information remains a bottleneck. We developed a novel computational algorithm, PATHOME, for detecting differentially expressed biological pathways. This algorithm employs straightforward statistical tests to evaluate the significance of differential expression patterns along subpathways. Applying it to gene expression data sets of gastric cancer (GC), we compared its performance with those of other leading prog
