15OBJECTIVES: Few parameters are available to predict neurologic outcome of post-cardiac arrest patients in the early stage of treatment. Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been used to indirectly assess intracranial pressure. This study evaluated whether ONSD, an additional parameter in initial brain computed tomography (CT) scans, can be an early predictor of neurologic outcome in post-cardiac arrest patients. METHODS: A total of 112 cardiac arrest patients between November 2012 and October
This study assessed the ability of the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) and Acute Physiology, Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II scoring systems, as well as the Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS) II method to predict group mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients who were poisoned with organophosphate. The medical records of 149 organophosphate poisoned patients admitted to the ICU from September 2006 to December 2012 were retrospectively examined. The SOFA, APACHE II,
OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to assess the ability of the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) and acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II scoring systems, as well as the simplified acute physiology score (SAPS) II method to predict group mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients who were poisoned with paraquat. This will assist physicians with risk stratification. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The medical records of 244 paraquat-poisoned patients admitted to the IC

This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the combination of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) measurement and initial neurological examination in predicting the neurological outcomes of patients with cardiac arrest (CA) by retrospectively analyzing data from the Korean Hypothermia Network prospective registry. NSE levels were recorded at 48 and 72 h after CA. The initial Full Outline of UnResponsiveness (FOUR) and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores were recorded. These variables were categorized
An increasing number of suicide attempts involve the ingestion of glyphosate surfactant; hence, clinical toxicologists may encounter severe cases of glyphosate surfactant intoxication. In several other clinical conditions, serum lactate is used to predict outcome. We investigated the relationship between lactate levels and 30-day mortality from glyphosate surfactant poisoning. This retrospective analysis involved 232 patients who were admitted to the emergency department after acute glyphosate s
BACKGROUND: During cardiac arrest (CA) and after cardiopulmonary resuscitation, activation of blood coagulation and inadequate endogenous fibrinolysis occur. The aim of this study was to describe the time course of coagulation abnormalities after out-of-hospital CA (OHCA) and to examine the association with clinical outcomes in patients undergoing targeted temperature management (TTM) after OHCA. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter, observational cohort study was performed in eight emergency
Routine medical checkups have been provided by both the government-led and private hospitals for the purposes of prevention and early detection of diseases. Various studies were conducted with clinical results obtained from both government and private hospital based results. However, results from two types of health checkups have not been conducted. The results should be compared for the prevalence of metabolic disease in the aspects of socioeconomic status and health care behaviors to observe t
Body circumference is a known health-related factor. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the associations of relative lower body circumferences with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and arterial stiffness (AS) in 684 men aged > 40 (mean, 54.6 ± 8.5) years. Participants were measured for waist , thigh, and calf circumferences; underwent blood tests and blood pressure measurements to detect MetS; and received brachial ankle pulse wave velocity measurements to measure AS. The waist-to-thigh, w
Fusobacteria are anaerobic gram-negative, non-spore forming bacilli found in normal flora of the oral cavity, urogenital tract, and gastrointestinal tract. Fusobacterium nucleatum has been seldom reported as a cause of liver abscess, particularly in immunocompetent hosts. A 55-year-old man with frequent periodontal disease visited our hospital with intermittent fever and headache for 2 months. Abdominal CT scan revealed an 8.2 × 6 cm mass in the right hepatic lobe with central low density. Absce
OBJECTIVE: The 2015 American Heart Association guidelines recommended pediatric rescue chest compressions of at least one-third the anteroposterior diameter of the chest, which equates to approximately 5 cm. This study evaluated the appropriateness of these two types by comparing their safeties in chest compression depth simulated by CT. DESIGN: Retrospective study with data analysis conducted from January 2005 to June 2015 SETTING:: Regional emergency center in South Korea. PATIENTS: Three hund
This study was designed to investigate the increase in the number of circulating CD34+ cells after acute myocardial infarction (MI) and the differentiation of these cells to cardiomyocytes after transplantation into infarcted myocardium. The study involved five donor groups: MI (n=27), sham (n=26), granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (GCSF) (n=26), MI+GCSF (n=25), and control (n=25). Acute MI was induced by ligating the left anterior descending coronary arteries (LAD) of donor rats, and LAD of
