15The researchers show that various biomechanical differences exist between healthy subjects and those with PF. Employing an arch building gait in patients with PF could be helpful in changing gait patterns to normal biomechanics.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of ultrasonography guided stellate ganglion block (US-SGB) with that of blind SGB in management of the stroke patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type 1. METHOD: Forty-two patients with post-stroke CRPS were randomly assigned to either US-guided SGB (22 patients) or blind SGB group (20 patients). The mean age of US-guided SGB and blind SGB groups was 61.3±5.6 years and 59.1±4.5 years. We performed two blockades at 7-day intervals on the affected
Monomelic amyotrophy (MMA), also known as Hirayama disease, is a sporadic juvenile muscular atrophy in the distal upper extremities. This disorder rarely involves proximal upper extremities and presents minimal sensory symptoms with no upper motor neuron (UMN) signs. It is caused by anterior displacement of the posterior dural sac and compression of the cervical cord during neck flexion. An 18-year-old boy visited our clinic with a 5-year history of left upper extremity pain and slowly progressi
Background: Shoulder subluxation occurs in 17−64% of hemiplegic patients after stroke and develops mostly during the first three weeks of hemiplegia. A range of shoulder orthoses has been used in rehabilitation to prevent subluxation. However, there is little evidence of their efficacy. AIM: This study aimed to investigate whether there is a difference in the subluxation distance, pain, and functional level of the hemiplegic upper extremity among patients with two different shoulder orthoses. De
VSA and FCR values were correlated with swallowing function and may be helpful in predicting dysphagia severity associated with stroke.
Malnutrition and autonomic dysfunction are associated with poor outcomes, mortality, and psychological problems after stroke. Relevant laboratory biomarkers include serum albumin, prealbumin, and transferrin. Heart rate variability (HRV), a noninvasive measurement, can objectively measure autonomic nervous system (ANS) function. The relationship between HRV and nutritional biomarkers in stroke patients has not been studied. This study aimed to examine the relationship between nutritional biomark
Phantom limbs are usually observed after amputation of extremities. In patients after a stroke, a similar but rarely occurring phenomenon consisting of the patient experiencing the presence of an additional limb has been described. This phenomenon, generally called supernumerary phantom limb (SPL), may be caused by lesions in the right or left cerebral hemisphere, but has been predominantly reported in patients who have had a right hemispheric stroke. We report two cases of atypical SPL and phan
Objective : To investigate the efficacy of core strengthening on trunk balance in patients with subacute stroke. Method : Fifty-nine subacute hemiparetic stroke in-patients participated in this study. All patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the control group and the experimental group. Both groups received the same conventional physical therapies for 4 weeks. The experimental group received an additional core strengthening program (CSP). Korean mini-mental state examination (K-
Objective: To investigate the effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) on muscle spasticity of elbow and wrist affected by stroke. Methods: We studied 21 patients affected by stroke with spasticity in upper limbs. The neurological status of the stroke patients were evaluated by K-NIHSS and the evaluation of efficacy on the upper limb spasticity were based on modified Ashworth scale (MAS), modified Tardieu scale (MTS), and active elevation of upper limb. Treatment was performed 1 sessio
This meta-analysis aimed to compare the effects of robot-assisted training (RAT) with those of conventional therapy (CT), considering the potential sources of heterogeneity in the previous studies. We searched three international electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library) to identify relevant studies. Risk of bias assessment was performed using the Cochrane's Risk of Bias 1.0 tool. The certainty of the evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment,
We report a 57-year-old man with bilateral cranial nerve IX and X palsies who presented with severe dysphagia. After a mild head injury, the patient complained of difficult swallowing. Physical examination revealed normal tongue motion and no uvular deviation. Cervical X-ray findings were negative, but a brain computed tomography revealed a skull fracture involving bilateral jugular foramen. Laryngoscopy indicated bilateral vocal cord palsy. In a videofluoroscopic swallowing study, food residue
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate characteristics of cognitive impairments according to the location of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) using a computerized neuropsychological test (CNT). METHOD: A total of 211 patients were transferred to our rehabilitation department after becoming neurologically stable following aneurysmal SAH. Twenty four of the 211 patients met the inclusion criteria and participated in a screening test using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE). Twenty patients with a MM
These results suggest that NOS1 may be related to the clinical phenotypes of ischemic stroke in Korean population.
Acute-phase rehabilitation hospitals focus on managing disabilities, reducing sequelae and symptoms, and enhancing social reintegration, to provide patients with the highest possible independence and the best quality of life. In order to achieve these goals, it is necessary to ensure the appropriate length of hospital stays based on a consideration of disease severity and patients' potential for rehabilitation, as well as to provide multidisciplinary rehabilitation. Multidisciplinary rehabilitat
