15Rhinovirus (RV) upper respiratory tract infections are prototypic transient inflammatory responses. To address the mechanism of disease resolution in these infections, we determined if RV stimulated the production of the IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) in vivo and in vitro. In contrast to IL-1alpha and IL-1beta, immunoreactive IL-1ra was readily detected in the nasal washings of normal human volunteers. Symptomatic RV infection caused a small increase in IL-1alpha, a modest increase in IL-1bet
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Measurement of the fraction of nitric oxide (FeNO) in exhaled air is useful in the management of asthma. A new hand-held nitric oxide (NO) analyzer, the NIOX MINO, is simple and easy to use in clinical practice. In this study, FeNO values measured using the NIOX MINO were compared with those obtained using a stationary chemiluminescence analyzer, the Sievers NOA280i. METHODS: FeNO was measured in 100 adults, using both the NIOX MINO and the NOA280i. Nine (9.0%) of these
BACKGROUND: While the clinical characteristics and outcomes of asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap (ACO) have been frequently compared with those of COPD or asthma, the prevalence and features of ACO in patients with severe asthma are unclear. OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of the prevalence and clinical features of ACO using the Korean severe asthma registry. METHODS: At the time of registration, ACO was determined in patients with severe asthma by attending specialists. Patient
Introduction Air pollutants are increasingly recognized to affect long-term outcomes in patients with bronchiectasis. We aimed to figure out the association between air pollutants and the risk of healthcare utilization in patients with bronchiectasis. Methods Data for 1,029 subjects with bronchiectasis in Seoul were extracted. The air pollutants included particulate matter of 10 μm or less in diameter (PM 10 ), particulate matter of 2.5 μm or less in diameter (PM 2.5 ), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), c
Whether indoor painting aggravates preexisting allergic diseases remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the impact of new classroom painting on aggravation of asthma, allergic rhinitis (AR), and atopic dermatitis (AD) in children. Studied school was previously painted with conventional water-based paint 20 years ago and had natural ventilation system. We identified a total of 172 children aged 10-12 years with allergic diseases in 17 classrooms, which were allocated to newly painted rooms with lo
Background: The impact of long-term chronic periodontal conditions on the risk of lung cancer could not be accurately evaluated. Our aim was to provide more evidence on the connection between chronic periodontitis (CP) and lung cancer using a nationwide dataset. Methods: This study used data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service National Sample Cohort. We enrolled 72,658 individuals with CP (CP cohort) between 2005 and 2019 and 1:1 age- and sex-matched controls without CP (non-CP coh
While it has been recognized that airway microbiome in asthma is different from healthy subjects, much is not known well regarding the mechanisms how this microbiota affects airway inflammation in asthma. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), such as sodium acetate (SA), sodium propionate (SP) and sodium butyrate (SB), produced by bacteria, exert various immune modulating effects. In this experimental study, we examined the effects of locally administered SCFA into airway on the allergic inflammation

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of an airway characterized by recurrent attacks of airflow obstruction that is at least partially reversible.1,2 This definition of implies that asthma can be completely reversible. Therefore, most patients with asthma (except those with severe or difficult-to-treat asthma) show the greatest improvement of symptoms in the first few months of therapy. Many newly diagnosed asthma patients irregularly or hardly follow the treatment advice of a physician due
DCs pulsed with killed allogeneic melanoma cells effectively cross-prime cytotoxic T cells that specifically target the Melan-A antigen. Moreover, naive CD8+ T cells primed by Melan-A-loaded DCs successfully killed malignant melanoma cells, highlighting a promising strategy for adoptive immunotherapy against melanoma.
Asthma is a serious health problem throughout the world with high prevalence and increased socioeconomic burden. So in order to have a better understanding and medication for this illness, many scientific advances have been made. To specify, Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) and National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) have played a leading role in disseminating information about the care for patients based on a process of continuous review of published scientific investigation
