Effect of alcohol consumption on kidney function: population-based cohort study
Yu‐Ji Lee, Seong Cho, Sung Rok Kim
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

The association between alcohol consumption and kidney function is intriguing, but study results are mixed and controversial. We examined the association of alcohol consumption with the overall change in kidney function over 12 years. We analyzed data from a population-based cohort that was part of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. Primary exposure was total alcohol intake (non-drinkers, 0 to < 10 g/day, 10 to < 30 g/day, and ≥ 30 g/day). Main outcome was decline in kidney function over

SJR Q1Critical Care Medicine

Development of nephrotoxicity was significantly more strongly associated with the dose of colistin, but only in patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate<60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and not in those with normal renal function.

SJR Q2Annals of Nutrition and MetabolismOA

BACKGROUND/AIMS: An association between metabolic syndrome and impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is still controversial. We investigated the association between metabolic syndrome in itself and HRQoL in the Korean adult population. METHODS: The study is a cross-sectional analysis of 8,941 adults ≥19 years of age who participated in the 2007 and 2008 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. EuroQoL five-dimension (EQ-5D), the EQ-5D index and the EQ visual analogue sc

The association of dialysis adequacy, body mass index, and mortality among hemodialysis patients
Woong-pyo Hong, Yu‐Ji Lee
SJR Q2BMC NephrologyOA

Abstract Background Although hemodialysis (HD) adequacy, single-pool Kt/V urea (spKt/V), is inversely correlated with body size, each is known to affect patient survival in the same direction. Therefore, we sought to examine the relationship between HD adequacy and mortality according to body mass index (BMI) in HD patients and explore a combination effect of BMI and HD adequacy on mortality risk. Methods We retrospectively reviewed patient data from the Korean Society of Nephrology registry, a

Association between simple renal cysts and development of hypertension in healthy middle-aged men

SJR Q1Journal of Hypertension

Simple renal cysts independently predicted incident hypertension in this cohort of middle-aged men. Further research is justified to test the causal role of renal cysts in the development of hypertension.

SJR Q1American Journal of NephrologyOA

BACKGROUND: High ultrafiltration rate (UFR) has been associated with increased mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. However, the impact of UFR on decline of residual kidney function (RKF) has not been elucidated among patients receiving conventional HD. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 7,753 patients who initiated conventional HD from 2007 to 2011 and survived the first year of dialysis with baseline UFR and renal urea clearance (KRU) data at baseline and 1 year (5th pat

The Association between Serum Adiponectin Levels and Nutritional Status of Hemodialysis Patients
Yu‐Ji Lee, Seong Cho, Sung Rok Kim
SJR Q1Renal FailureOA

Adiponectin plays an important role in the regulation of body weight, insulin sensitivity, lipid metabolism, and the inflammatory response. Adiponectin is elevated in hemodialysis patients. We investigated the association between altered serum adiponectin levels and the nutritional-inflammation status of hemodialysis patients. Forty-four hemodialysis patients (21 men and 23 women; mean age 53.9 ± 9.2 years) were enrolled and 32 healthy volunteers were included as the control group. Serum adipone

The aim of this study was to compare the long-term safety and efficacy of immunosuppressive regimens consisting of cyclosporine (CsA) plus mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) or tacrolimus (TAC) plus MMF after steroid withdrawal 6 months after kidney transplantation in low-risk patients. One hundred and thirty-one patients were randomized to receive either CsA (n = 63) or TAC (n = 68). Of these, 117 patients satisfied the criteria for steroid withdrawal (no biopsy-proven rejection episode and serum crea

Effect of losartan on proteinuria and urinary angiotensinogen excretion in non-diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease

SJR Q2Postgraduate Medical Journal

PURPOSE: Activation of the rennin-angiotensin system (RAS) is thought to contribute to hypertension and proteinuria, and eventually to the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Recent evidence suggests that urinary angiotensinogen (UAGT) excretion reflects activation of the intrarenal RAS. This study was performed to determine the effect of losartan on proteinuria and UAGT excretion in non-diabetic patients with CKD with non-nephrotic-range proteinuria. STUDY DESIGN: Thirty-two patients w

Unilateral and bilateral acute pyelonephritis: differences in clinical presentation, progress and outcome
Yu‐Ji Lee, Seong Cho, Sung Rok Kim
SJR Q2Postgraduate Medical Journal

PURPOSE: Acute pyelonephritis (APN) generally involves a single kidney, but it can be bilateral. The aim of the present study was to evaluate differences in clinical presentation, progress and outcome for bilateral APN compared with unilateral APN. STUDY DESIGN: The medical records of all patients over 19 years of age, hospitalised for APN and who underwent abdominal enhanced CT at Samsung Changwon Hospital between January 2009 and August 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided

SJR Q1Nutrition JournalOA

Abstract Background A loss of muscle mass may be influenced by multiple factors. Insulin sensitivity and metabolic acidosis are associated with muscle wasting and may be improved with potassium intake. This study evaluated the association between dietary potassium intake and skeletal muscle mass. Methods We performed a cross-sectional study with data obtained from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) (2008–2011). Participant’s daily food intake was assessed using

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Low health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is associated with adverse outcomes in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) patients. We examined the modifiable factors associated with low HRQOL in these patients. We enrolled 141 DKD patients. HRQOL was assessed with the Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire. Low HRQOL was defined as a score > one standard deviation below the mean. Depression and anxiety were assessed with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-D and HDAS-A, respectively). Interaction of malnutrition, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide and ventricular remodeling in patients on maintenance hemodialysis
Yu‐Ji Lee, Bong Gun Song, Min Su Kim, Seong Cho, Woo Jung Chun, Ju Hyun Oh, Sung Rok Kim
SJR Q3Clinical Nephrology

Malnutrition in hemodialysis patients is accompanied by volume overload and associated with increased log NT-proBNP levels independent of volume status, and these levels are independently associated with increased LVMI. This suggests a possibility that nutritional status may affect ventricular remodeling in hemodialysis patients.
