15BACKGROUND: It is not clear whether familial non-medullary thyroid cancer (FNMTC) is more aggressive and has a poorer prognosis, than sporadic carcinoma. Therefore, the optimal clinical approach for FNMTC is yet to be established. In this study, we investigated the biological behavior and prognosis of FNMTC compared with its sporadic counterpart. METHODS: Between 1996 and 2004, 1,262 patients underwent a total thyroidectomy for conventional PTC at Asan Medical Center and 113 (9.0%) were diagnose
This study was conducted to determine which genotypes were present in southwestern Korea. Nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequence analysis targeting the Orientia tsutsugamushi-specific 56-kDa protein gene was performed with samples of blood and eschar. Of the 69 PCR-positive samples, 61 clustered with the Boryong previously isolated in Korea. CUH 4-6 had sequence homology of 100% with Kato, and CUH 4-3 had homology of 99.8% with Kato and formed the Kato cluster. CUH 4-57, CUH 4-3
BACKGROUND: Regional lymph node metastases (LNM) have prognostic significance in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). However, there was no distinction between N1a and N1b in the final staging classification in the eighth edition of the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic implication of N1b classification for predicting disease-specific survival (DSS) in DTC patients with stage I/II disease. METHODS: A total of 3089 patients with stage I/II DTC
Extensive vascular invasion was the only independent risk factor for distant metastasis of MIFTC. No proteins markers were directly related to distant metastasis, but CK19 was associated with extensive vascular invasion.
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surgical outcomes of 400 cases of robotic thyroid surgery using a double incision gasless transaxillary approach. METHODS: We analyzed 400 patients who underwent a robot-assisted thyroidectomy performed by a single surgeon. RESULTS: All patients underwent successful operations without conversion to open surgery. Transient hypoparathyroidism was the most common complication (51.7%) and permanent hypoparathyroidism occurred in only 2 patien
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic impact of further treatments in minimally invasive follicular thyroid carcinoma (MIFTC) patients. METHODS: The risk factors for distant metastases were analyzed, and the impact of surgical extent on distant metastasis was verified by using weighted logistic regression models with inverse-probability of treatment weighting (IPTW). RESULTS: 166 patients including 31 males (18.7 %) and 135 females (81.3 %), with the mean age of 41.5 ±
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to validate the dynamic risk stratification (DRS) system, evaluate its correlation with structural recurrence, and assess the clinicopathological risk factors associated with a nonexcellent response to initial therapy in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) measuring 1 to 4 cm. METHODS: A total of 762 patients with classic PTC measuring 1 to 4 cm were classified into four categories based on their response to initial therapy 2 years postoperati
Background: This study aimed to identify the clinical results after thyrotropin suppression therapy (TST) cessation and evaluated clinical factors associated with successful TST cessation. Methods: Patients who underwent lobectomy due to low-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) were included in this study. We compared clinical characteristics and outcomes between patients who succeeded to stop TST and failed to stop TST. Results: A total of 363 patients were included in the study. One hundred
OBJECTIVES: To compare prospectively the efficacy of early intravenous bolus of oxycodone or fentanyl in providing analgesia at emergence from general anaesthesia following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned to receive either 0.08 mg/kg oxycodone (Group O) or 1 µg/kg fentanyl (Group F), 20 min before the end of surgery. Postoperative pain was evaluated using a visual analogue scale (VAS). The time to first postoperative analgesic dose, requirement for analgesi
To determine the clinicopathological risk factors and reliable biochemical predictors of the development of hypocalcemic symptoms after total thyroidectomy on the basis of serum calcium and intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels measured 1 hour after surgery, a prospective study was performed on 817 patients who underwent a total thyroidectomy with central compartment node dissection (CCND) due to well-differentiated thyroid cancer. We evaluated the correlations between hypocalcemic symptom dev
Hepatic diseases, such as hepatonecrosis, hepatitis, and hepatocirrhosis, are associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and increased reactive oxygen species generation and inflammation, ultimately leading to liver failure. In this study, we examined if acupuncture at LR3 can affect mitochondria-related gene expression in a liver damage model of experimentally induced acute liver failure (ALF). ALF was induced by the intraperitoneal injection of D-galactosamine (D-GalN) in experimental rats, who
