15BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the effects of ambient respiratory viral infections in the general population on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) development. METHODS: Data of weekly incident RA (2012-2013) were obtained from the Korean National Health Insurance claims database, and those of weekly observations on eight respiratory viral infections were obtained from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention database. We estimated the percentage change in incident RA associated with ambi
OBJECTIVE: To compare clinical features and mortality between childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) and adult-onset SLE (aSLE) in a prospective single-center cohort. METHODS: A total of 1112 patients with SLE (133 cSLE and 979 aSLE) were enrolled and followed from 1998 to 2012. The 2 groups were compared regarding American College of Rheumatology (ACR) classification criteria for SLE, autoantibodies, disease activity measured by the Adjusted Mean SLE Disease Activity Index (AMS), d
AIM: To describe the clinical manifestations, disease activity and organ damage in Korean patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHOD: American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria, SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI), and Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/ACR damage index (SDI) were assessed in patients with SLE from 1998 to 2012. RESULTS: A total of 996 SLE patients were analyzed. The common accrual of ACR criteria included: immunologic (93%), hematologic (93%),
Abstract Impact of genetic variants on the age of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) onset was not fully understood. We investigated a cumulative effect of SLE-risk variants on the age of SLE onset and scanned genome-wide SNPs to search for new risk loci of childhood-onset SLE (cSLE). We analyzed 781 Korean single-center SLE subjects who previously genotyped by both Immunochip and genome-wide SNP arrays. Individual genetic risk scores (GRS) from well-validated SLE susceptibility loci were calcul
This is the first study to demonstrate that BMP6 is associated with radiographic severity in AS, supporting the role wingless-type like/BMP pathway on radiographic progression in AS.
In patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), there are concerns that infections may increase the risk of flares. We evaluated the association between influenza infection and SLE flares resulting in hospitalization. SLE flares resulting in hospitalization and influenza cases were ascertained from the Korean national healthcare insurance database (2014-2018). We used a self-controlled case series design. We defined the risk interval as the first 7 days after the influenza index date and th
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the association of CD40 polymorphisms with the risk of SLE in the Korean population. METHODS: A total of 601 Korean SLE patients and 984 healthy controls were enrolled. We selected seven CD40 gene SNPs based on previous results of CD40 gene sequencing in the Korean population. Statistical analysis was carried out by logistic regression, controlling for age and sex as covariates. Odds ratios (ORs) and P-values in co-dominant, dominant and recessive
AIM: To compare renal outcomes between cyclophosphamide (CYC) and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), and attempt to identify a predictor of renal survival. METHODS: A total of 99 patients with class III-V lupus nephritis (LN) and treated with CYC or MMF were enrolled. The remission rate and predictors of poor renal outcomes in LN were assessed. RESULTS: The mean age at LN diagnosis was 31.7 years. The baseline characteristics of the two groups were similar except for the chronicity index (3.1 ± 2.4 an
BACKGROUND: variant rs35705950 is the common and most significant risk variant for rheumatoid arthritis-interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) in Western populations. However, little is known about its significant association with RA-ILD in Asian populations. We here investigate the association of rs35705950 with Korean patients with RA-ILD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we genotyped rs35705950 in 2444 patients with RA. Among them, 683 patients with RA who have chest CT were divided into R
Radiographic progression is reported to be highly heritable in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, previous study using genetic loci showed an insufficient accuracy of prediction for radiographic progression. The aim of this study is to identify a biologically relevant prediction model of radiographic progression in patients with RA using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) combined with bioinformatics analysis. We obtained genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data for 374 Korean
Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the association of lupus nephritis on organ damage and mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods A total of 1112 patients with SLE were investigated. Lupus nephritis was defined as a proteinuria based on the 1997 American College of Rheumatology criteria. Damage was assessed using the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics/American College of Rheumatology Damage Index. The associations of lupus neph
