15Human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived intestinal organoids (hIOs) form 3D structures organized into crypt and villus domains, making them an excellent in vitro model system for studying human intestinal development and disease. However, hPSC-derived hIOs still require in vivo maturation to fully recapitulate adult intestine, with the mechanism of maturation remaining elusive. Here, we show that the co-culture with human T lymphocytes induce the in vitro maturation of hIOs, and identify STAT
OBJECTIVES: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and sarcopenia have a close association with an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). This study investigated the influence of NAFLD and sarcopenia on ASCVD risk. METHODS: Data from the 2008-2011 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys database were analyzed (n = 7,191). The sarcopenia index was calculated using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Sarcopenia was defined as the lowest quintile sarcopen
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We investigated the relationship between the degree of thrombus resolution and the time from stroke onset or thrombus formation to intravenous tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) treatment. METHODS: In patients with stroke, we measured thrombus volume on thin-section noncontrast brain computed tomographic scans taken at baseline and 1 hour after tPA administration. We determined the association between the time from symptom onset to tPA treatment and the degree of thr
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The CHADS(2) score is used for risk stratification of ischemic stroke in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation and high CHADS(2) scores are associated with increased risk of stroke. Most components of the CHADS(2) score are also risk factors for atherosclerosis. Therefore, high CHADS(2) scores can be associated with concomitant cerebral atherosclerosis and subsequently atherothrombotic stroke. The aim of this study was to determine whether there are differences in
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and morbidity worldwide. The occurrence of stroke is strongly dependent on well-known vascular risk factors. After rapid modernization, urbanization, and mechanization, East Asian countries have experienced growth in their aged populations, as well as changes in lifestyle and diet. This phenomenon has increased the prevalence of vascular risk factors among Asian populations, which are susceptible to developing cardiovascular risk factors. However, dif
PURPOSE: To investigate the prognosis related to antiepileptic drug (AED) discontinuation after successful surgery for intractable temporal lobe epilepsy. METHODS: The clinical courses after temporal lobectomies (TLs) were retrospectively analyzed in 88 consecutive patients. All the patients had TLs as the only surgical procedure, and they had been followed up for longer than 3 years. AED discontinuation was attempted if the patient had been seizure free without aura for >or=1 year during the fo
Acute variceal bleeding could be a fatal complication in patients with liver cirrhosis. In patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis accompanied by ascites or hepatic encephalopathy, acute variceal bleeding is associated with a high mortality rate. Therefore, timely endoscopic hemostasis and prevention of relapse of bleeding are most important. The treatment goals for acute variceal bleeding are to correct hypovolemia; achieve rapid hemostasis; and prevent early rebleeding, complications relat
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are extravasations of blood from lipohyalinized or amyloid angiopathic cerebral arterioles, and the presence and numbers of CMBs are significantly associated with the development of oral anticoagulation (OA)-related intracranial haemorrhage (ICH). The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a difference in CMBs burden according to CHADS(2) scores or CHA(2) DS(2) -VASc scores in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients. MET
The dependence of multifragment-emission processes upon linear momentum transfer to the target residue is determined for $^{36}\mathrm{induced}$ reactions on $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ at E/A=35 MeV. Significantly more intermediate-mass fragments are emitted in central collisions. Multiplicity distributions for intermediate-mass fragments emitted behind the grazing angle resemble Poisson distributions and are consistent with a stochastic production process. Exit channels with up to five intermediate-mas
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A higher CHADS(2) score or CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc score is associated with an increased risk of ischaemic stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). However, there are no data regarding early neurological outcomes after stroke according to the risk levels. METHODS: In this study, a total of 649 stroke patients with NVAF were enrolled and categorized into three groups: low-risk (CHADS(2) score of 0-1), moderate-risk (CHADS(2) score 2-3), or high-risk group
Introduction: Sarcopenia, a age-related disease characterized by loss of muscle mass accompanied by loss of function, is associated with nutrition imbalance, physical inactivity, insulin resistance, inflammation, metabolic syndrome, and atherosclerosis which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, its association with outcomes after ischemic stroke has not been well-established. This study investigated whether functional outcomes of patients with acute ischemic stroke is associated
We found that the atherosclerotic burden has been increasing for the past eight years in Korean stroke patients, particularly the combined EC and IC subtype. Lifestyle changes and increase in vascular risk factors may be contributing factors.
