15We investigated the clinical value of whole blood procalcitonin using point of care testing, quick sequential organ failure assessment score, C-reactive protein and lactate in emergency department patients with suspected infection and assessed the accuracy of the whole blood procalcitonin test by point-of-care testing. Participants were randomly selected from emergency department patients who complained of a febrile sense, had suspected infection and underwent serum procalcitonin testing. Whole
By itself ADSF assessment performed well in diagnosis of PE. The combined result of a positive D-dimer and abnormal ADSF increased the specificity for diagnosing PE compared with the D-dimer test alone. The use of additional bedside ADSF assessment following a positive D-dimer test may reduce the need for further imaging studies to detect PE in patients with a low or intermediate clinical probability.
The Ganoderma species are mushrooms used for herbal medicinal purposes in northeast Asia. Two cases of simultaneous reversible pancytopenia following the consumption of decoction of Ganoderma neojaponicum Imazeki are presented. Other than decoction of G. neojaponicum Imazeki no cause of pancytopenia could be identified. The patients recovered fully after conservative treatment. People who consume herbal medicines are often not aware of their side effects. Patients should be knowledgeable regardi
BACKGROUND: According to domestic studies, patients visiting the emergency departments (ED) with acute toxic exposure comprise 0.68%-5.5% of all ED patients, with various causes and motives. The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical and social characteristics of patients with toxic exposure visiting the ED. METHODS: This study spanned a period of five years, from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2013. The data were extracted using the National Emergency Department Information Syste

BACKGROUND: Most trauma patients visit the hospital via the emergency department. They are at high risk for tetanus infection because many trauma patients are wounded. Tetanus immunity in the Korean population has been revealed to be decreased in age groups over 20 years old. It is important for emergency physicians to vaccinate patients with the tetanus booster in wound management. METHODS: Questionnaires were sent to the directors of the emergency departments of resident training hospitals cer
The role of HTS in restoring Jurkat cells proliferation suppressed by PGE(2), at least in part, should be mediated through a MIF pathway.
Introduction. The rapid antigen test (RAT) plays an important role in the Emergency Room (ER). In this study, we investigated the effect of the RAT for influenza on clinical practice in an emergency department.Methods. A retrospective chart review was conducted considering two periods, namely before and after the 2009 influenza pandemic. The rate of antibiotic administration, the use of blood sample tests, the use of simple chest X-rays, the rate of antibiotic administration according to the res
Many patients are admitted to the emergency department due to trauma. Patients with massive hemorrhage and respiratory failure can fall into hypovolemic shock. Thereafter, oxygen is an essential part of the treatment of trauma patients, but the mechanisms of its effects in the management of trauma patients remain unknown. Therefore, we conducted an experiment to apply hypoxia, hyperoxia, and other treatment with the goal of decreasing hypoxic neuronal cells damage, as reflected by cell survival,
OBJECTIVES: Continuous blood gas monitoring is frequently necessary in critically ill patients. Our aim was to assess the accuracy of transcutaneous CO₂ tension (PtcCO₂) monitoring in the emergency department (ED) assessment of hypotensive patients by comparing it with the gold standard of arterial blood gas analysis (ABGA). METHODS: All patients receiving PtcCO₂ monitoring in the ED were included. We excluded paediatric patients, patients with no ABGA results during a hypotensive event, patient
Hypertonic saline has an immunomodulatory effect on polymorphonuclear cells through the TLR-4 pathway, and the interleukin-1β-associated pathway is influenced more by hypertonic saline than is the tumor necrosis factor-α-associated pathway.
In the fast-paced emergency departments, where crises unfold unpredictably, the systematic prioritization of critical patients based on a severity classification is vital for swift and effective treatment. This study aimed to enhance the quality of emergency services by automatically categorizing the severity levels of incoming patients using AI-powered natural language processing (NLP) algorithms to analyze conversations between medical staff and patients. The dataset comprised 1,028 transcript
Purpose: Trauma-induced suppression of cellular immune function likely contributes to sepsis, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and death. T cell proliferation decreases after traumatic stress. The addition of prostaglandin E_2 (PGE_2), which depresses immune function after hemorrhage and trauma, to T-cells decreases T-cell proliferation; and hypertonic saline restores PGE_2-induced T-cell suppression. Recently, it has become apparent that macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) plays a c
This report introduces and discusses the present state of the helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) in the metropolitan area of South Korea. The data of patients transported by HEMS from April 2007 to June 2009 were provided by Seoul Metropolitan Fire and Disaster Management Department. The data of patients subsequently transported to Korea University Guro Hospital were analyzed. During the study period, 725 emergency rescue calls were dispatched and 703 patients were rescued, of which 56
