BACKGROUND: We evaluated the feasibility and outcomes of pulmonary resection and mediastinal node dissection (MND) by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) following neoadjuvant therapy for stage IIIA N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: From November 2009 to December 2013, a total of 35 consecutive patients with pathologically or radiologically confirmed stage IIIA N2 lung cancer underwent pulmonary resection and MND, performed by a single surgeon, following neoadjuvant chemora

SJR Q2Thoracic CancerOA

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of thoracic duct embolization (TDE) on the management of postoperative chyle leakage. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical record database of 4171 patients who underwent curative resection for lung or esophageal cancer between January 2015 and June 2017. We classified the period before the introduction of TDE as the first period and the period after the introduction of TDE as the second period. RESULTS: A tota

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to validate the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) residual tumor classification in patients with stage III-N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) undergoing neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (nCCRT) followed by surgery. BACKGROUND: As adequate nodal assessment is crucial for determining prognosis in patients with clinical N2 NSCLC undergoing nCCRT followed by surgery, the new classification may have better prognostic implica

SJR Q2Thoracic CancerOA

BACKGROUND: Recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis (RLNP) is a common complication after esophagectomy which can cause severe pulmonary complications. However, bilateral RLNP has been rarely reported in esophagectomy patients. The objective of our study is to investigate the clinical significance of patients who had bilateral RLNP following esophagectomy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent esophagectomy at a single center from 1994 to 2018. Among these, patients with bilate

Harlequin Syndrome Following Resection of Mediastinal Ganglioneuroma
Yeong Jeong Jeon, Jongbae Son, Jong Ho Cho
The Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular SurgeryOA

Harlequin syndrome is a rare disorder of the sympathetic nervous system characterized by unilateral facial flushing and sweating. Although its etiology is unknown, this syndrome appears to be a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. To the best of our knowledge, thus far, very few reports on perioperative Harlequin syndrome after thoracic surgery have been published in the thoracic surgical literature. Here, we present the case of a 6-year-old patient who developed this unusual syndrome fo

SJR Q1Diseases of the Esophagus

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is closely associated with type 2 diabetes and a developing several cancers including esophageal cancer (EC). However, the association between MASLD and EC in diabetic patients has not been investigated. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relation between MASLD and developing EC in diabetic patients. This was a population-based retrospective cohort study of data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). A total

SJR Q2Thoracic CancerOA

BACKGROUND: The role of adjuvant chemotherapy in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of adjuvant chemotherapy on survival in patients with positive nodes after surgery for ESCC. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the survival outcomes of node-positive patients with ESCC who underwent curative resection with or without adjuvant chemotherapy between January 1994 and December 2015. RESULTS: We analyzed 460 patients (333 adjuvant

SJR Q2Yonsei Medical JournalOA

We report a case treated by veno-venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (vva-ECMO) for stress cardiomyopathy due to exacerbation of asthma. A 45-year-old woman with a history of asthma was transferred to our emergency department from a local medical center. She had developed severe dyspnea and wheezing an hour before. At the time of arrival at our hospital, she was already intubated and had been administered systemic corticosteroid. The initial blood pressure (BP) was 140/90 mm Hg,

SJR Q1Annals of Surgery

OBJECTIVE: To propose a new ypTNM grouping system to address these limitations and improve prognostic relevance. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: The current 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) ypStage system shows unsatisfactory prognostic relevance in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) followed by esophagectomy. METHODS: The study cohort included 501 ESCC patients who received nCRT followed by esophagectomy

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising from the Pleural Cavity After Pneumonectomy for Chronic Empyema
Yeong Jeong Jeon, Sumin Shin, Young Mog Shim
The Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular SurgeryOA

Malignant tumors associated with chronic empyema have been reported in the literature, and a majority of these tumors are lymphomas. Epithelial tumors originating from the post-pneumonectomy space in patients with chronic empyema are extremely rare. Here, we present the cases of 2 patients with squamous cell carcinoma arising from the pleural cavity after pneumonectomy for chronic empyema.

SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary resection surgery causes severe postoperative pain and usually requires opioid-based analgesia, particularly in the early postoperative period. However, the administration of large amounts of opioids is associated with various adverse events. We hypothesized that patients who underwent pulmonary resection under an enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program consumed fewer opioids than patients who received conventional treatment. METHODS: A total of 2147 patients underwe

Lobe‐Specific Variability in Postoperative Pulmonary Function in Lung Cancer Patients: A Longitudinal Analysis and Comparison With Traditional Predictive Models
Yeong Jeong Jeon, Sumin Shin, Sunga Kong, Seongwoo Yang, Jong Ho Cho, Hong Kwan Kim, Young Mog Shim, Danbee Kang, Hye Yun Park
SJR Q1RespirologyOA

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lobectomy is the primary treatment for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer. However, pulmonary function declines postoperatively, presenting a significant challenge. This study investigated pulmonary function following lobectomy and compared these changes with predicted lung function based on the traditional segmental method, focusing on resected lobe-specific variability. METHODS: ), and diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) were conducted preoperatively and
