이 글의 취지는 잘 알려지지 않은 17세기 영국 여성의 자전적 신앙 산문을 소개하고 연구 대상으로 조명하는 데 있다. 『아그네스 보몬트의 박해 서사』로 알려진 이 자전적 신앙 산문은 22세 중하층 여성의 1인칭 저술이고 현재 필사본으로 남아있다. 아그네스 보몬트의 생애, 『박해』의 필사본 특성, 전개 양상, 집필 동기에 대해 고찰하면서 이 산문이 갖는 컨텍스트와 텍스트적 특이점들을 살펴본다. 이 글은 두 가지의 목표를 가지고 있다. 하나는 자세한 비평적 소개를 통해 『박해』를 학술적 연구 범주로 끌어오고 앞으로 다양한 논의의 장을 만드는 것이다. 또 하나의 목표는 아그네스 보몬트의 서술 전략을 조망하면서 『박해』를 종교와 문학이 매개되는 방식을 탐색하는 것이다.

이 글은 여성 문학사에서 지속되어 온 문제—시야에서 사라진 여성의 글/쓰기를 어떻게 가시화할 것인가, 여성의 지적인 노동을 여성주의 관점에서 어떻게 조명할 것인가—를 논의의 대상으로 삼는다. 남성 중심의 문학 정전에서 여성이 오랫동안 배제되었다는 인식은 이미 널리 공유되고 있으며, 여성의 잃어버린 문학적 유산을 회복하는 일이 비단 근세 시대 문학이나 영국 문학에 국한된 문제도 아니다. 그러나 근세 시대 영국 여성의 글/쓰기는 텍스트와 문맥의 관계, 생산과 수용 및 재생산의 관계, 젠더와 장르의 관계, 여성의 삶, 관점, 저술을 형성하는 역사적 특성들, 초기 출판문화와 현대 디지털 재생산 시대에서 필사본의 위치, 변화하는 저자성, 권위, 장르의 개념 등 여성주의 비평가들이 고심하는 대표적 문제를 점검할 수 있는 유의미한 현장을 제공한다. 이러한 문제에 대해 답하려는 노력으로 이 글은 먼저 기존 문학 비평에서 여전히 잘 포착되지 않은 근세 시대 영국 여성의 글/쓰기 속성을 살펴본다. 이
