15Sarcopenia is an age-related geriatric syndrome which is characterized by the gradual loss of muscle mass, muscle strength, and muscle quality. There are a lot of neurologic insults on sarcopenia at various levels from the brain to the neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) to generate a volitional task. Dopaminergic downregulation, inadequate motor programming and motor coordination impairment lead to decline of supraspinal drive. Motor unit reorganization and inflammatory changes in motor neuron decre
To investigate the clinical relevance of CSF myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-immunoglobulin G (MOG-IgG) testing in a large multicenter cohort.
Importance: A proportion of people with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) have a relapsing disease course and persistent anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein immunoglobulin G (MOG-IgG) seropositivity. Few studies have investigated whether treatment of the first MOGAD attack is associated with the long-term disease course and/or MOG-IgG seronegative conversion. Objective: To investigate the association of time to treat the first acute MOGAD attack with re
The prevalence of sarcopenia was different among groups. The prevalence rate in obese women was lower than that in non-obese women. SO is a new category of obesity in older adults with high adiposity coupled with low muscle mass. The prevalence of SO was lower than that in previous studies because of differences in the definition. A consensus definition of SO needs to be established.
BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for anti-muscle specific tyrosine kinase (MuSK) antibody (Ab) in a large cohort of anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) Ab-negative generalized myasthenia gravis (MG), and also to investigate clinical contexts for the diagnosis of MuSK MG. METHODS: A retrospective study of 160 patients with a clinical suspicion of AChR Ab-negative generalized MG was performed. The serum samples were tested for ant
The centipede Scolopendra subpinipes mutilans is a medicinally important arthropod species. However, its transcriptome is not currently available and transcriptome analysis would be useful in providing insight into a molecular level approach. Hence, we performed de novo RNA sequencing of S. subpinipes mutilans using next-generation sequencing. We generated a novel peptide (scolopendrasin II) based on a SVM algorithm, and biochemically evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial activity of scolopendras
An inflammatory demyelinating disease of the CNS with antibody against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG-IgG) is now accepted as a discrete disease category of MOG encephalomyelitis (MOG-EM).1 Previous case studies described abundant accumulation of phagocytic cells (either Iba1+ and/or CD68+) at the active demyelinating lesions of MOG-EM.2–5 However, both Iba1 and CD68 can be expressed in either the microglia or macrophage.6 Recently, transmembrane protein 119 (TMEM119) has been proposed
A 43-year-old man with a history of 7 repeated optic neuritis episodes since the 1990s developed dysarthria, dysphagia, and gait disturbance in 2015 with T2 high signal intensity (HSI) lesion in the left frontal white matter. He tested positive for myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody using cell-based assay, at a titer of >1:1,280.1 During follow-up, longitudinal neurologic examinations revealed progressive neurologic deterioration without any acute aggravation of cognitive, cerebe
The gut and brain are linked via various bidirectional pathways, and they communicate withand affect each other. The interaction between the gut-brain axis and the gut microbiota has attracted much attention in the development of hypertension. In this review, we have discussed the gut-brain-microbiota axis and its association with gut dysbiosis in terms of regulation of blood pressure using the autonomic nervous system, immune system, metabolites, hormones, and neurotransmitters. In addition, th
Cases of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) co-occurring with neoplasms have been reported. In this international, retrospective cohort study in South Korea and the USA, 16 of 445 (3.6%) patients with MOGAD had concurrent neoplasm within 2 years of MOGAD onset, resulting in a standardized incidence ratio for neoplasm of 3.10 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.77-4.81; P < 0.001) when compared to the age- and country-adjusted incidence of neoplasm in the g
Objectives: Transient insomnia symptoms are seen in about 30-50% of general population, which needs easily accessible and comfortable methods to improve the sleep quality. To assess the effect of indigo blanket on sleep promotion, we conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial. Methods: Thirty subjects were recruited in this study and were randomly divided into two groups, indigo blanket and placebo blanket group. The subjects went to sleep with indigo or placebo blanket for o
