15Abstract Background: Most patients with gastric cancer rapidly lose weight after gastrectomy. Therefore, analysis of the effect of body mass index (BMI) on patients with gastric cancer survival should include postoperative BMI and BMI loss and preoperative BMI. This retrospective cohort study analyzed the effect of three BMI variables and their interaction on long-term outcomes. Methods: Preoperative BMI analysis included 2,063 patients with gastric cancer who underwent curative gastrectomy betw
We conducted a case-control study to investigate whether vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF -2578, -1154, -634, and 936) and kinase insert domain containing receptor (KDR -604, 1192, and 1719) polymorphisms are associated with moyamoya disease. Korean patients with moyamoya disease (n = 107, mean age, 20.9±15.9 years; 66.4% female) and 243 healthy control subjects (mean age, 23.0±16.1 years; 56.8% female) were included. The subjects were divided into pediatric and adult groups. Among the 6
BACKGROUND: Preoperative sarcopenia is associated with a poor long-term prognosis in patients with gastric cancer (GC). Most GC patients rapidly lose muscle mass after gastrectomy. This retrospective cohort study analysed the effect of postoperative muscle loss and surgery-induced sarcopenia on the long-term outcomes of patients with GC. METHODS: Preoperative and postoperative 1 year abdominal computed tomography scans were available for 1801 GC patients who underwent curative gastrectomy betwee
OBJECTIVES: The unfavorable surgical results that have been reported with insular epilepsy surgery may be related to inadequate monitoring. Insular epilepsy surgery requires the precise monitoring and tailored removal of the epileptic zone. The purposes of this study were to precisely monitor the hidden cortex and determine the effectiveness of using different monitoring methods, including subpial depth electrodes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a study of a single center series of six patients
OBJECT: The object of this study was to compare the recurrence rates of cystic craniopharyngiomas after neuroendoscopic cyst fenestration combined with Gamma Knife surgery (GKS) and after subtotal resection (STR) combined with GKS. METHODS: The records of 27 patients (age range 3-66 years) with cystic craniopharyngiomas that were treated surgically or neuroendoscopically before GKS between January 2000 and December 2007 were reviewed to compare recurrence rates. The patients were divided into 2
BACKGROUND: Uncut Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy (uRYGJ) was developed to prevent slow peristalsis in the Roux limb after Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy (RYGJ). This study compared the incidence of Roux stasis syndrome (RSS) and severe gastric food stasis in gastric cancer patients who underwent RYGJ or uRYGJ after laparoscopic curative distal gastrectomy. METHODS: Between January 2006 and June 2012, 319 patients underwent RYGJ or uRYGJ. After covariates were adjusted by propensity score matching, 39
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to introduce a combination procedure with double C-shaped skin incision and an adjusted dual-floor burr hole to prevent skin complications on the scalp with deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. METHODS: Between March 2000 and March 2010, 504 DBS electrodes were implanted in 268 patients. We included both bilateral and unilateral DBS surgery cases for Parkinson's disease, tremor, pain, obsessive-compulsive disorder and intractable seizure accompanied wit
