15Abstract Despite the importance of preventing chronic kidney disease (CKD), predicting high-risk patients who require active intervention is challenging, especially in people with preserved kidney function. In this study, a predictive risk score for CKD (Reti-CKD score) was derived from a deep learning algorithm using retinal photographs. The performance of the Reti-CKD score was verified using two longitudinal cohorts of the UK Biobank and Korean Diabetic Cohort. Validation was done in people w
Significance Statement Although preventing CKD is an important goal of BP control, it is unknown whether systolic BP that rises over time in persons without hypertension can impair kidney function. In a prospective community-based cohort study involving 4643 Korean participants without hypertension or CKD, the authors characterized three temporal systolic BP trends and analyzed the association of these trends with subsequent development of CKD. Individuals with systolic BP on an increasing traje
Studies on the longitudinal temporal trend of blood pressure (BP) and its impact on kidney function are scarce. Here, we evaluated the association of dynamic changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP) over time with adverse kidney outcomes. We analyzed 1837 participants from the KNOW-CKD (Korean Cohort Study for Outcomes in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease). The main exposure was 3 distinct SBP trajectories determined by the latent class mixed model (decreasing, stable, and increasing) using 3
BACKGROUND: Core stabilization plays an important role in the regulation of postural stability. To overcome shortcomings associated with pain and severe core instability during conventional core stabilization tests, we recently developed the dynamic neuromuscular stabilization-based heel sliding (DNS-HS) test. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to establish the criterion validity and test-retest reliability of the novel DNS-HS test. METHOD: Twenty young adults with core instability complet
BACKGROUND: The International IgA Nephropathy Prediction Tool has been recently developed to estimate the progression risk of immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN). This study aimed to evaluate the clinical performance of this prediction tool in a large IgAN cohort in Korea. METHODS: The study cohort was comprised of 2,064 patients with biopsy-proven IgAN from four medical centers between March 2012 and September 2021. We calculated the predicted risk for each patient. The primary outcome was occu
BACKGROUND: Urinary chloride is regulated by kidney transport channels, and high urinary chloride concentration in the distal tubules can trigger tubuloglomerular feedback. However, little attention has been paid to urinary chloride as a biomarker of clinical outcomes. Here, we studied the relationship between urinary chloride concentration and chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. METHODS: We included 2086 participants with CKD from the KoreaN cohort study for Outcomes in patients With Chro
Sarcopenia, which is characterized by muscle mass and physical performance, is closely associated with morbidities and mortality, especially among the elderly. However, the effect of physical performance on chronic kidney disease (CKD) development is not yet fully elucidated. A total of 30,871 adults aged 66 years with preserved renal function who underwent health screening examinations were evaluated. Physical performance was assessed using a 3-m timed up and go (TUG) test and the one-leg stand
Abstract Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effects of body weight fluctuations on kidney function deterioration in a prospective cohort of individuals with normal kidney function. Methods Data were obtained from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. Body weight fluctuations were determined using average successive variability (ASV), which was defined as the average absolute body weight change using repeated measurements for all participants. The decline of the estimated glomerular f
Background: Dynamic postural instability is a common neuromuscular impairment in cerebral palsy (CP), which often includes balance dysfunction and an associated risk of serious falls. Robotic hippotherapy has recently become a widespread clinical application to facilitate postural core stabilization, strength, and endurance through repetitive vestibular and proprioceptive stimulation to the spine via the sensorimotor system pathways. However, the long-term effects of robotic hippotherapy on dyna
BACKGROUND: Smoking cessation is recommended to reduce excess atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, this recommendation is largely based on observational studies on the general population Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the association of smoking dose and smoking cessation duration with ASCVD and mortality in patients with CKD. METHODS: We compiled a comprehensive pooled dataset comprising 66 245 participants with CKD
Smoking is a known risk factor for various diseases-including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and chronic kidney disease (CKD)-and all-cause mortality. Smoking cessation reduces the risk of CKD, CVD, and mortality in the general population. However, the effect of smoking cessation on adverse outcomes in patients with CKD remains unclear. This study conducted a narrative review of studies that examined the association between smoking cessation and adverse outcomes using data
