15The significant advance in the development of molecular-targeting drugs has made an evaluation of Her-2, EGFR, and cyclin D1 an important clinical issue in breast cancer patients. This study compared the Her-2, EGFR, and cyclin D1 status of primary tumors as well as their matching lymph node metastases using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) in 73 breast cancer patients. Her-2, EGFR, and cyclin D1 protein showed a concordance between the primary lesion and t
Purpose Papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs) frequently involve genetic alterations. The objective of this study was to investigate genetic alterations and further explore the relationships between these genetic alterations and clinicopathological characteristics in a high-recurrence risk (node positive, N1) PTC group. Materials and Methods Tumor tissue blocks were obtained from 240 surgically resected patients with histologically confirmed stage III/IV (pT3/4 or N1) PTCs. We screened gene fusion
Adenomyoma is a rare non-neoplastic lesion of the biliary tract. Here we report on three cases of adenomyoma; one located in the ampulla of Vater and two located in the common bile duct. Although preoperative endoscopic and radiological evaluations could not determine whether lesions were benign or malignant, intra-operative frozen section histologic examinations aided the differential diagnosis. Microscopic features of a lobular gland architecture with basally located nuclei and the absence of
A diffuse sclerosing variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma is uncommon and has a tendency for rapid growth and a higher incidence of cervical lymph node metastases. We experienced a case of a diffuse sclerosing variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma in a 48-year-old man. This case showed benign features on initial ultrasonography and positron emission tomography (PET) scan. A new nodule was detected on follow-up ultrasonography that showed rapid enlargement. This case was confirmed by surgical
Purpose: Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) are two main subtypes of well-differentiated thyroid cancer. Sometimes FTCs present more aggressive features such as vascular invasion. The object of this study was to investigate the clinicopathologic features, prognostic factors and treatment outcome of FTC. Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 91 patients diagnosed with FTC between November 1994 and October 2008. The clinicopathologic characteristics, trea
Background: Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter mutations are associated with increased recurrence and mortalityin patients with thyroid carcinoma. Previous studies on TERT promoter mutations were retrospectively conducted on a limited number of patients. Methods: We prospectively collected data on all consecutive patients who underwent thyroid carcinoma surgery between January2019 and December 2020 at the Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. We included 2,092 patients with thyroid
Background: The clinical usefulness of flow cytometry (FCM) for the diagnosis of leptomeningeal diseases (LMD) in non-Hodgkin lymphomas has been suggested in previous studies but needs to be further validated. With this regards, we evaluated the use of FCM for LMD in a series of Korean patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Methods: FCM and cytomorphology were conducted using samples obtained from clinically suspected LMD patients, follow-up LMD patients, and those with high risk of developing tumo
Background: Recently, BRAF inhibitors showed dramatic treatment outcomes in BRAF V600 mutant melanoma. Therefore, the accuracy of BRAF mutation test is critical. Methods: BRAF mutations were tested by dual-priming oligonucleotide-polymerase chain reaction (DPO-PCR), direct sequencing and subsequently retested with a real-time PCR assay, cobas 4800 V600 mutation test. In total, 64 tumors including 34 malignant melanomas and 16 papillary thyroid carcinomas were analyzed. DNA was extracted from for
Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid is an extremely rare tumor with a highly aggressive clinical course. We report here on a patient with primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid who remains alive more than 8 years after diagnosis. A 56-year-old man presented with a hoarse voice and a rapidly progressing mass on the right side of the thyroid gland. The patient underwent a total thyroidectomy without neck lymph node dissection. Histopathologic findings revealed primary squamous c
Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the validity of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) according to ultrasonography (US) characteristics in thyroid nodules 4 cm and larger. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the cases of 263 patients who underwent thyroid surgery for thyroid nodules larger than 4 cm between January 2001 and December 2010. Results: The sensitivity of US-FNAB was significantly higher in nodules with calcifications (micro- or macro-) than those without (97.9
Hyalinizing trabecular tumor is a rare benign thyroid tumor first described by Carney et al. in 1987. The tumor is characterized by an encapsulated nodule, trabecular arrangement of polygonal, oval, elongated cells, and hyalinized stroma. It is easily confused with papillary thyroid carcinoma or medullary thyroid carcinoma on surgical and cytologic specimens. A 45-year-old man presented with an incidentally detected left thyroid mass. Fine needle aspiration was performed and papillary thyroid ca
Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy (CNB) has been increasingly used for the pre-operative diagnosis of thyroid nodules. Since the Korean Society of the Thyroid Radiology published the ‘Consensus Statement and Recommendations for Thyroid CNB’ in 2017 and the Korean Endocrine Pathology Thyroid CNB Study Group published ‘Pathology Reporting of Thyroid Core Needle Biopsy’ in 2015, advances have occurred rapidly not only in the management guidelines for thyroid nodules but also in the diagnostic te
Purpose: The goal of this study was to investigate the level of agreement between tumor sizesmeasured on ultrasonography (US) and in pathological specimens of papillary thyroid carcinomas(PTCs) and to identify the US characteristics contributing to discrepancies in these measurements. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the US findings and pathological reports of 490 tumorsin 431 patients who underwent surgery for PTC. Agreement was defined as a difference of<20% between the US and pathological
Background : Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common malignant tumor of the thyroid and BRAF (V600E) is the most frequent genetic alteration in PTCs. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of BRAF mutation, especially in very small PTCs. Methods : We analyzed the presence of the BRAF mutation in PTCs in subgroups defined by tumor size (0.5 cm intervals). Results : Of 140 patients, 85 (60.7%) showed a BRAF mutation. The frequency of BRAF mutation in the subgroup was:
