In traditional optoelectronic approaches, control over spin, charge, and light requires the use of both electrical and magnetic fields. In a spin-polarized light-emitting diode (spin-LED), charges are injected, and circularly polarized light is emitted from spin-polarized carrier pairs. Typically, the injection of carriers occurs with the application of an electric field, whereas spin polarization can be achieved using an applied magnetic field or polarized ferromagnetic contacts. We used chiral

GraphScape
Young-Hoon Kim, Kanit Wongsuphasawat, Jessica Hullman, Jeffrey Heer

We present GraphScape, a directed graph model of the vi- sualization design space that supports automated reasoning about visualization similarity and sequencing. Graph nodes represent grammar-based chart specifications and edges rep- resent edits that transform one chart to another. We weight edges with an estimated cost of the difficulty of interpreting a target visualization given a source visualization. We con- tribute (1) a method for deriving transition costs via a partial ordering of edit

Assessing Effects of Task and Data Distribution on the Effectiveness of Visual Encodings
Young-Hoon Kim, Jeffrey Heer
SJR Q1Computer Graphics Forum

Abstract In addition to the choice of visual encodings, the effectiveness of a data visualization may vary with the analytical task being performed and the distribution of data values. To better assess these effects and create refined rankings of visual encodings, we conduct an experiment measuring subject performance across task types (e.g., comparing individual versus aggregate values) and data distributions (e.g., with varied cardinalities and entropies). We compare performance across 12 enco

Gemini: A Grammar and Recommender System for Animated Transitions in Statistical Graphics
Young-Hoon Kim, Jeffrey Heer
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics

Animated transitions help viewers follow changes between related visualizations. Specifying effective animations demands significant effort: authors must select the elements and properties to animate, provide transition parameters, and coordinate the timing of stages. To facilitate this process, we present Gemini, a declarative grammar and recommendation system for animated transitions between single-view statistical graphics. Gemini specifications define transition "steps" in terms of high-leve

Layer‐by‐Layer Controlled Perovskite Nanocomposite Thin Films for Piezoelectric Nanogenerators

SJR Q1Advanced Functional Materials

Perovskite nanoparticle‐based nanocomposite thin films strictly tailored using unconventional layer‐by‐layer (LbL) assembly in organic media for piezoelectric nanogenerators (NGs) are demonstrated. By employing sub‐20‐nm BaTiO 3 nanoparticles stabilized by oleic acid ligands (i.e., OA‐BTO NPs ) and carboxylic acid (COOH)‐functionalized polymers, such as poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), the resulting OA‐BTO NP /PAA nanocomposite multilayers are prepared by exploiting the high affinity between the COOH g

An Adaptively Accelerated Lucy-Richardson Method for Image Deblurring
Manoj Kumar Singh, Uma Shanker Tiwary, Young-Hoon Kim
SJR Q2EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal ProcessingOA

We present an adaptively accelerated Lucy-Richardson (AALR) method for the restoration of an image from its blurred and noisy version. The conventional Lucy-Richardson (LR) method is nonlinear and therefore its convergence is very slow. We present a novel method to accelerate the existing LR method by using an exponent on the correction ratio of LR. This exponent is computed adaptively in each iteration, using first-order derivatives of the deblurred image from previous two iterations. Upon usin

Adaptive and Optimal Rejection of Non-Repeatable Disturbance in Hard Disk Drives
Young-Hoon Kim, Chang-Ik Kang, Masayoshi Tomizuka

This paper presents an efficient control strategy to reduce the non-repeatable position error signal (PES) components caused by mechanical vibration in hard disk drives. A peak filter is designed that plugs into a servo loop in parallel with the existing controller. Based on the PES, the filter's center frequency is adaptively searched for in order to identify a dominant spectral peak. An analytical procedure is proposed to design the filter that minimally affects the stability of control system

Effect of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Decaffeination on Volatile Components of Green Teas
S. Lee, M.K. Park, Kyoung Heon Kim, Young-Hoon Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Food Science

Volatile components in regular and decaffeinated green teas were isolated by simultaneous steam distillation and solvent extraction (SDE), and then analyzed by GC-MS. A total of 41 compounds, including 8 alcohols, 15 terpene-type compounds, 10 carbonyls, 4 N-containing compounds, and 4 miscellaneous compounds, were found in regular and decaffeinated green teas. Among them, linalool and phenylacetaldehyde were quantitatively dominant in both regular and decaffeinated green teas. By a decaffeinati

Analogue circuit design methodology using self‐cascode structures
Ki–Ju Baek, Jie-Wei Gim, H.‐S. Kim, K.‐Y. Na, Nam Soo Kim, Young-Hoon Kim
SJR Q3Electronics LettersOA

A new analogue circuit design methodology using independently optimised self‐cascode (SC) structures is proposed. Based on the concept of the dual‐workfunction‐gate structures, which are equivalent to SC structures, transconductance and output resistance optimised SC MOSFETs were used in the differential input and output stages, respectively. An operational amplifier (opamp) with the proposed design methodology using standard 0.18 µm CMOS technology was designed to provide better performance. Th
