Modeling and Analysis of a Variable Speed Heat Pump for Frequency Regulation Through Direct Load Control
Young‐Jin Kim, Leslie K. Norford, James L. Kirtley
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Power SystemsOA

This paper presents a dynamic model of a variable speed heat pump (VSHP) in a commercial building that responds to direct load control (DLC) signals, updated every 4 s, for the improvement of grid frequency regulation (GFR). The model is simplified for real-time simulation studies with the time horizon ranging from seconds to hours, but still sufficiently comprehensive to analyze the operational characteristics such as the heat rate and coefficient of performance. A variable speed drive-controll

Experimental Study of Grid Frequency Regulation Ancillary Service of a Variable Speed Heat Pump
Young‐Jin Kim, E. Fuentes, Leslie K. Norford
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Power Systems

This paper describes an analysis of a variable speed heat pump (VSHP), which responds to direct load control (DLC) signals to provide grid frequency regulation (GFR) ancillary service, while ensuring the comfort of building occupants. A data-driven dynamic model of the VSHP is developed through real-time experimental studies with a time horizon ranging from seconds to hours. The model is simple, yet still sufficiently comprehensive to analyze the operational characteristics of the VSHP. The DLC

Coordinated Control of a DG and Voltage Control Devices Using a Dynamic Programming Algorithm
Young‐Jin Kim, Seon-Ju Ahn, Pyeong-Ik Hwang, Gi-Chan Pyo, Seung‐Il Moon
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Power Systems

This paper presents a new control method, in which a distributed generator (DG) actively participates in steady-state voltage control, together with an under-load tap changer (ULTC) and shunt capacitors (Sh.Cs). In the conventional DG control method, the integration of DGs into a distribution power system increases the number of switching operations of the ULTC and the Sh.Cs. To solve this problem, this paper proposes that the DG output voltage be dispatched cooperatively with the operation of t

A Supervised-Learning-Based Strategy for Optimal Demand Response of an HVAC System in a Multi-Zone Office Building
Young‐Jin Kim
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid

The thermal capacity of buildings enables heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems to be exploited as demand response (DR) resources. Optimal DR of HVAC units is challenging, particularly for multi-zone buildings, because this requires detailed physics-based models of zonal temperature variations for HVAC system operation and building thermal conditions. Using supervised learning (SL), this paper proposes a new strategy for optimal DR of an HVAC system in a multi-zone building.

Analysis and Experimental Implementation of Grid Frequency Regulation Using Behind-the-Meter Batteries Compensating for Fast Load Demand Variations
Young‐Jin Kim, Gerard Del-Rosario-Calaf, Leslie K. Norford
SJR Q1IEEE Transactions on Power Systems

This paper proposes a new grid frequency regulation (GFR) scheme using behind-the-meter battery energy storage systems (BESSs). The fast dynamic responses of the electrical BESSs enable buildings to compensate for the high-frequency components of load demand variations, through direct load control (DLC). An electrical system in a building, along with its building-level and device-level controllers, is considered to address the difficulties in the application of DLC, especially in communicating w

SSTP: A scalable and secure transport protocol for smart grid data collection
Young‐Jin Kim, Vladimir Kolesnikov, Hongseok Kim, Marina Thottan

Emerging smart grid networks are expected to have massive amounts of data continuously generated from various measuring devices (intelligent sensors, advanced meters, electric vehicle charging stations) which are embedded in the power grid. Data generated from these measuring devices must be delivered securely and reliably to utility control centers for wide-area monitoring and control and to estimate the overall grid status in a timely and precise manner. The collected data is also used for inc

SJR Q1ACS Applied Energy Materials

The process of fabricating the solar absorbing spinel-structured CuCr2O4 black oxide pigment doped with different metals (Mn, Ni, Co, Al, Zn, and Sn) was discovered to improve the solar selective property. Manganese stands out as an ideal dopant to copper chromite (CuCr2O4) for highly solar absorptive pigments compared to the other metal dopings. XRD analysis confirmed that various molar ratios of CuCr(2–x)MnxO4 spinel black oxides were successfully fabricated. Mn-doped black oxide has the highe

Technologies and Magnitude of Ancillary Services Provided by Commercial Buildings
Young‐Jin Kim, David Blum, Nora Xu, Leo Su, Leslie K. Norford
SJR Q1Proceedings of the IEEE

Commercial buildings increasingly include technologies capable of providing ancillary services to electric power grids. Features include thermal energy storage inherent in building structures that can be coupled to electric grids through heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems controlled by variable-speed drives (VSDs). In parking garages, plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) are connected to the building power lines through charging stations and can be utilized as grid storage. Sy
