The effects of surface wettability on the fog and dew moisture harvesting performance on tubular surfaces
Donghyun Seo, Junghun Lee, Choongyeop Lee, Youngsuk Nam
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

The efficient water harvesting from air-laden moisture has been a subject of great interest to address world-wide water shortage issues. Recently, it has been shown that tailoring surface wettability can enhance the moisture harvesting performance. However, depending on the harvesting condition, a different conclusion has often been reported and it remains unclear what type of surface wettability would be desirable for the efficient water harvesting under the given condition. Here we compare the

Energy and hydrodynamic analyses of coalescence-induced jumping droplets
Youngsuk Nam, Hyun‐Sik Kim, Seungwon Shin
SJR Q1Applied Physics Letters

We report our dynamic analysis of coalescence-induced jumping on superhydrophobic surfaces with a full 3D numerical model supported with experiments. The analysis shows that approximately half (40%–60%) of the released surface energy during the coalescence is converted to kinetic energy before the detachment starts. The rapid increase in the kinetic energy at the beginning is initiated from low pressure associated with the high negative curvature of a liquid bridge. The asymmetric nature of the

Fabrication and Characterization of the Capillary Performance of Superhydrophilic Cu Micropost Arrays
Youngsuk Nam, Stephen Sharratt, Chan Byon, Sung Jin Kim, Y. Sungtaek Ju
SJR Q2Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems

We report the fabrication of dense arrays of super-hydrophilic Cu microposts at solid fractions as high as 58% and aspect ratios as high as four using electrochemical deposition and chemical oxidation techniques. Oxygen surface plasma treatments of photoresist molds and a precise control of the initial electrodeposition current are found to be critical in creating arrays of nearly defect-free Cu posts. The capillary performance of the micropost arrays is characterized using capillary rate of ris

A comparative study of the morphology and wetting characteristics of micro/nanostructured Cu surfaces for phase change heat transfer applications
Youngsuk Nam, Y. Sungtaek Ju
SJR Q2Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology

A comparative study of oxidation methods to create Cu surfaces with controlled wettability is reported. Micro/nanostructures of Cu oxides are formed on Cu substrates using different chemical and thermal oxidation methods. The morphology and wetting characteristics of the resulting surfaces are characterized using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and contact angle measurements. Chemical oxidation in alkali solutions can form uniform copper oxide layers wit

Experimental and Numerical Study of Single Bubble Dynamics on a Hydrophobic Surface
Youngsuk Nam, Jinfeng Wu, Gopinath R. Warrier, Y. Sungtaek Ju
Journal of Heat Transfer

The growth and departure of single bubbles on two smooth surfaces with very different wettabilities are studied using high-speed video microscopy and numerical simulations. Isolated artificial cavities of approximately 10 μm diameter are microfabricated on both a bare and a Teflon-coated silicon substrate to serve as nucleation sites. The bubble departure diameter is observed to be almost 3 times larger and the growth period almost 60 times longer for the hydrophobic surface than for the hydroph

Two types of Cassie-to-Wenzel wetting transitions on superhydrophobic surfaces during drop impact

SJR Q2Soft Matter

Despite the fact that superhydrophobic surfaces possess useful and unique properties, their practical application has remained limited by durability issues. Among those, the wetting transition, whereby a surface gets impregnated by the liquid and permanently loses its superhydrophobicity, certainly constitutes the most limiting aspect under many realistic conditions. In this study, we revisit this so-called Cassie-to-Wenzel transition (CWT) under the broadly encountered situation of liquid drop

Characterization and Modeling of the Heat Transfer Performance of Nanostructured Cu Micropost Wicks
Youngsuk Nam, Stephen Sharratt, Gilhwan Cha, Y. Sungtaek Ju
Journal of Heat Transfer

Micro heat pipes incorporating advanced wicks are promising for the thermal management of power electronics. We report the heat transfer performance of superhydrophilic Cu micropost wicks fabricated on thin silicon substrates using electrochemical deposition and controlled chemical oxidation. For a fixed post diameter, the interpost spacing and hence solid fraction is found to be a main design factor affecting the effective heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux. The effective heat tra

Drop Impact Dynamics on Oil-Infused Nanostructured Surfaces
Choongyeop Lee, Hyun‐Sik Kim, Youngsuk Nam
SJR Q1Langmuir

We experimentally investigated the impact dynamics of a water drop on oil-infused nanostructured surfaces using high-speed microscopy and scalable metal oxide nano surfaces. The effects of physical properties of the oil and impact velocity on complex fluid dynamics during drop impact were investigated. We show that the oil viscosity does not have significant effects on the maximal spreading radius of the water drop, while it moderately affects the retraction dynamics. The oil viscosity also dete

Bubble nucleation on hydrophobic islands provides evidence to anomalously high contact angles of nanobubbles
Youngsuk Nam, Y. Sungtaek Ju
SJR Q1Applied Physics Letters

We observe stable steady-periodic vapor bubble nucleation on islands of nanoscopically smooth hydrophobic materials microfabricated on a silicon substrate. The minimum surface superheat required for the onset of bubble nucleation is very low (∼9 °C), which cannot be explained by the established models of heterogeneous bubble nucleation. A modified bubble nucleation model indicates that the observed minimum superheat can be explained when one assumes the existence of a nanoscale interfacial gas p

A Scalable Haze‐Free Antireflective Hierarchical Surface with Self‐Cleaning Capability

SJR Q1Advanced ScienceOA

The lotus effect indicates that a superhydrophobic, self-cleaning surface can be obtained by roughening the topography of a hydrophobic surface. However, attaining high transmittance and clarity through a roughened surface remains challenging because of its strong scattering characteristics. Here, a haze-free, antireflective superhydrophobic surface that consists of hierarchically designed nanoparticles is demonstrated. Close-packed, deep-subwavelength-scale colloidal silica nanoparticles and th

Droplet coalescence on water repellant surfaces
Youngsuk Nam, Donghyun Seo, Choongyeop Lee, Seungwon Shin
SJR Q2Soft Matter

We report our hydrodynamic and energy analyses of droplet coalescence on water repellent surfaces including hydrophobic, superhydrophobic and oil-infused superhydrophobic surfaces. The receding contact angle has significant effects on the contact line dynamics since the contact line dissipation was more significant during the receding mode than advancing. The contact line dynamics is modeled by the damped harmonic oscillation equation, which shows that the damping ratio and angular frequency of
