The horizontal-branch stars in globular clusters. 2: The second parameter phenomenon
Young‐Wook Lee, P. Demarque, R. Zinn
SJR Q1The Astrophysical Journal

Using synthetic horizontal-branch models, we have investigated the origin of the systematic variation in horizontal-branch (HB) morphology with galactocentric distance (RG) among globular clusters. The variations in He abundance, CNO abundance, and core mass required separately to explain this effect are inconsistent with either the observed properties of the RR Lyrae variables or the observed main-sequence turnoffs in the clusters. There is also no clear evidence that the trend with

The horizontal-branch stars in globular clusters. I - The period-shift effect, the luminosity of the horizontal branch, and the age-metallicity relation
Young‐Wook Lee, P. Demarque, R. Zinn
SJR Q1The Astrophysical Journal

Synthetic models of the horizontal branches in globular clusters are constructed from a grid of the standard horizontal branch evolutionary tracks. The models are used to study the period shifts at constant T(eff) between RR Lyrae variables in globular clusters of different metallicities and the variation in horizontal-branch luminosity with the Fe/H ratio. The results suggest that the observed differences in the mean periods of the ab variables and the fraction of c-type variables between the t

Recent observations for the color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the massive globular cluster Omega Centauri have shown that it has a striking double main sequence (MS), with a minority population of bluer and fainter MS well separated from a majority population of MS stars. Here we confirm, with the most up-to-date Y2 isochrones, that this special feature can only be reproduced by assuming a large variation (Delta Y = 0.15) of primordial helium abundance among several distinct populations in this

Kinematic Decoupling of Globular Clusters with the Extended Horizontal Branch
Young‐Wook Lee, Hansung B. Gim, Dana I. Casetti‐Dinescu
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

About 25% of the Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) exhibit unusually extended color distribution of stars in the horizontal-branch (HB) phase. This phenomenon is now best understood as due to the presence of helium enhanced second generation subpopulations, which has raised a possibility that these peculiar GCs might have a unique origin. Here we show that these GCs with extended HB are clearly distinct from other normal GCs in kinematics and mass. The GCs with extended HB are more massive than

Early-type Host Galaxies of Type Ia Supernovae. II. Evidence for Luminosity Evolution in Supernova Cosmology
Yijung Kang, Young‐Wook Lee, Young-Lo Kim, Chul Chung, Chang Hee Ree
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

Abstract The most direct and strongest evidence for the presence of dark energy is provided by the measurement of galaxy distances using SNe Ia. This result is based on the assumption that the corrected brightness of SN Ia through the empirical standardization would not evolve with look-back time. Recent studies have shown, however, that the standardized brightness of SN Ia is correlated with host morphology, host mass, and local star formation rate (SFR), suggesting a possible correlation with

Evidence for an old Galactic bulge from RR Lyrae stars in Baade's window - Implications for the formation of the Galaxy and the age of the universe
Young‐Wook Lee
SJR Q1The Astronomical Journal

Recent abundance measurements of RR Lyrae variables in the Baade's window field of the Galactic nuclear bulge are examined, and the observed metallicity distributions of the RR Lyraes in different Galactic radial zones are compared with those predicted for the HB population models. It is shown that the observed systematic variation with Galactocentric distance is only explained if the age of the stellar population increases, in the mean, with decreasing R(G). Thus, the oldest stellar population,

On the Sandage period shift effect among field RR Lyrae stars
Young‐Wook Lee
SJR Q1The Astrophysical Journal

The origin of the disagreement between the results of the synthetic horizontal branch (HB) model of Lee et al. (1990) and the Sandage (1990) analysis of Lub's (1977) data on a sample of field RR Lyrae stars is investigated, extending the original synthetic HB calculations of Lee et al. to all HB types over the metallicity range of the Galactic halo. It is shown that the period shifts of the RR Lyrae stars in globular clusters depend strongly on their HB type and metallicity. Results suggest that

STAR FORMATION HISTORIES OF GLOBULAR CLUSTERS WITH MULTIPLE POPULATIONS. I. ω CEN, M22, AND NGC 1851
Seok-Joo Joo, Young‐Wook Lee
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

There is increasing evidence that some massive globular clusters (GCs) host multiple stellar populations having different heavy element abundances enriched by supernovae. They usually accompany multiple red giant branches (RGBs) in the color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), and are distinguished from most of the other GCs which display variations only in light element abundances. In order to investigate the star formation histories of these peculiar GCs, we have constructed synthetic CMDs for \omega\

E-H mode transition in low-pressure inductively coupled nitrogen-argon and oxygen-argon plasmas
Young‐Wook Lee, Hye Lan Lee, T. H. Chung
SJR Q2Journal of Applied Physics

This work investigates the characteristics of the E-H mode transition in low-pressure inductively coupled N2-Ar and O2-Ar discharges using rf-compensated Langmuir probe measurements and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). As the ICP power increases, the emission intensities from plasma species, the electron density, the electron temperature, and the plasma potential exhibit sudden changes. The Ar content in the gas mixture and total gas pressure have been varied in an attempt to fully character

The Milky Way without X: an alternative interpretation of the double red clump in the Galactic bulge
Young‐Wook Lee, Seok-Joo Joo, Chul Chung
SJR Q1Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical SocietyOA

The presence of two red clumps (RCs) in high-latitude fields of the Milky Way bulge is interpreted as evidence for an X-shaped structure originated from the bar instability. Here we show, however, that this double RC phenomenon is more likely to be another manifestation of multiple populations observed in globular clusters (GCs) in the metal-rich regime. As in the bulge GC Terzan 5, the helium enhanced second-generation stars in the classical bulge component of the Milky Way are placed on the br

Environmental Dependence of Type Ia Supernova Luminosities from a Sample without a Local–Global Difference in Host Star Formation
Young-Lo Kim, M. Smith, M. Sullivan, Young‐Wook Lee
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

Abstract It is established that there is a dependence of the luminosity of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) on environment: SNe Ia in young, star-forming, metal-poor stellar populations appear fainter after light-curve shape corrections than those in older, passive, metal-rich environments. This is accounted for in cosmological studies using a global property of the SN host galaxy, typically the host galaxy stellar mass. However, recent low-redshift studies suggest that this effect manifests itself m

CHEMICAL INHOMOGENEITY IN RED GIANT BRANCH STARS AND RR LYRAE VARIABLES IN NGC 1851: TWO SUBPOPULATIONS IN RED GIANT BRANCH
Jae-Woo Lee, Jina Lee, Young-Woon Kang, Young‐Wook Lee, Sang-Il Han, Seok‐Joo Joo, Soo‐Chang Rey, David Yong
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

We investigate the red giant branch (RGB) subpopulations of NGC 1851 using Ca uvby photometry. Our colormagnitude diagrams show that the RGB stars have two subpopulations and the RGB stars in NGC 1851 appear to have distinct elemental abundance patterns with the [Ca/H] abundance. We discuss that the elemental abundance patterns can be explained by the contributions from the asymptotic giant stars, confirming the previous studies by others. The RR Lyrae variables in NGC 1851 appear to have a larg

Stellar evolution and period changes in RR Lyrae stars
Young‐Wook Lee
SJR Q1The Astrophysical Journal

The observed secular period changes of RR Lyrae stars in five globular clusters have been compared with those predicted by synthetic models of the horizontal branch (HB). It is shown that most of the observed number distributions of the period change rate beta could be attributed to evolutionary effects, if the random observational error is of order + or - 0.07 days/Myr in beta as suggested by the observers. The model calculations indicate that the mean rate of period change in RR Lyrae stars in
