During cancer immunoediting, loss of major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) in neoplasm contributes to the evasion of tumours from host immune system. Recent studies have demonstrated that most natural killer (NK) cells that are found in advanced cancers are defective, releasing the malignant MHC-I-deficient tumours from NK-cell-dependent immune control. Here, we show that a natural killer T (NKT)-cell-ligand-loaded tumour-antigen expressing antigen-presenting cell (APC)-based vaccine

Early detection of colorectal cancer based on presence of methylated syndecan-2 (SDC2) in stool DNA

SJR Q1Clinical EpigeneticsOA

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening can effectively reduce disease-related mortality by detecting CRC at earlier stages. We have previously demonstrated that the presence of SDC2 methylation in stool DNA is significantly associated with the occurrence of CRC regardless of clinical stage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of stool DNA-based SDC2 methylation test for CRC. METHODS: Aberrant SDC2 methylation in stool-derived DNA was measured by linear target en

SJR Q1Clinical EpigeneticsOA

Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is the most efficient strategy to reduce disease-related mortality. Frequent aberrant DNA methylation is known to occur in selected genes and early during CRC development, which has emerged as a new epigenetic biomarker for early detection of CRC. Previously, we reported that we identified that CpG sites of SDC2 were aberrantly methylated in tumor tissues of most CRC patients through comprehensive methylation analysis and demonstrated a high potential of quantif

SJR Q3MedicineOA

Preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is the standard of care for patients with stage II and III rectal cancer. This strategy leads to pathologic complete response (pCR) in a significant number of patients. Factors predictive of pCR are currently being extensively investigated. The aim of this study was to analyze clinical factors that might be predictive of pCR.This study was a retrospective analysis of rectal cancer patients from January 2004 through December 2012. A total of 332 stage II and I

Prognosis of ulcerative colitis colorectal cancer vs. sporadic colorectal cancer: propensity score matching analysis
Yoon Dae Han, Mahdi Hussain Al Bandar, Audrius Dulskas, Min Soo Cho, Hyuk Hur, Byung Soh Min, Kang Young Lee, Nam Kyu Kim
SJR Q2BMC SurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis (UC) harbours a high risk of UC-associated colorectal cancer (UCCC), which is important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Overall Survival (OS) of patients with UCCC has not been addressed well in the literature. Thus, we compared oncologic outcome of UCCC and sporadic colorectal cancer (SCC) using propensity score matching analysis. METHODS: Propensity score matching was performed for 36 patients, a 1:1 matching method s

SJR Q2Journal of Laparoendoscopic & Advanced Surgical TechniquesOA

BACKGROUND: Inguinal hernia is a common disease treated with diverse methods. Nowadays, laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal approach is gaining its validity and shows favorable outcomes. However, single-incision laparoscopic surgery is also widening its applicable fields as a new technique. This study aimed to find whether single-incision laparoscopic total extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair (SILTEP) is applicable compared to conventional laparoscopic total extraperitoneal hernia repair (CL

(Fn) is commonly enriched in colorectal cancer (CRC) and associated with poor outcomes, though its mechanisms remain unclear. Our study investigated how Fn affects the tumor microenvironment through single-cell transcriptomic analyses of 42 CRC patient tissues, comparing Fn-positive and Fn-negative tumors. We discovered that Fn impairs IgA plasma cell development and secretory IgA (sIgA) production by disrupting communication with tumor-associated macrophages. Additional experiments in germ-free

SAR target segmentation based on shape prior
Yoon Dae Han, Yuanxiang Li, Wenxian Yu

It's very challenging to interpret the SAR image due to the speckle noise and target's heterogeneity, etc. And the use of image information alone often leads to poor segmentation. However, the introduction of shape prior into the active contours has proved to be very effective to segment the target. In this study, we define the shape of SAR target and introduce it into our active contours. To avoid the irregularity of level set evolution, a novel potential function is introduced to regularize th

SJR Q3International Journal of Surgery Case ReportsOA

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: World Health Organization (WHO) defines PEComa as a mesenchymal tumor composed of histologically and immunohistochemically distinctive perivascular epithelioid cells. The symptoms and clinical signs of PEComa patients are nonspecific. Hence, diagnosis is usually difficult. Since it's a rare diagnosis, further research might help in understanding the disease better. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient in this study was an asymptomatic patient, who did colonoscopy as part o

Purpose: Recent studies have shown that cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 may be involved in tumor growth, invasion and apoptosis in various carcinomas. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has a potent angiogenic activity, and COX-2 promotes angiogenesis by modulating angiogenic factors, including VEGF. Endothelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) is considered as a factor of cell growth, maturation and cell death. The current study was designed to investigate the possible roles of COX-2 in colorectal t
