15To assess the safety and therapeutic efficacy of autologous human bone marrow cell (BMC) transplantation and the administration of granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), a phase I/II open-label and nonrandomized study was conducted on 35 complete spinal cord injury patients. The BMCs were transplanted by injection into the surrounding area of the spinal cord injury site within 14 injury days (n = 17), between 14 days and 8 weeks (n = 6), and at more than 8 weeks (n = 12) afte
OBJECT: Proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) is a common and significant complication after corrective spinal deformity surgery. The object of this study was to compare-based on clinical outcomes, postoperative proximal junctional kyphosis rates, and prevalence of revision surgery-proximal thoracic (PT) and distal thoracic (DT) upper instrumented vertebra (UIV) in adults who underwent spine fusion to the sacrum for the treatment of spinal deformity. METHODS: In this retrospective study the authors
Occurrence of HO is an inevitable postoperative complication after cervical ADR. The occurrence rate of HO was higher than our expectation. Moreover, definite differences in occurrence rate according to the prosthesis type were identified by this study.
Neural stem cells have been proposed as useful vectors for treating diseases in the CNS, but their utility is severely limited by lack of accessibility. Brain development is ongoing extensively in early postnatal life. However, it is unclear whether stem cells that differentiate into neurons exist in the blood during early postnatal life. We showed in this experiment that neural markers (NeuN, neurofilament, MAP2, GFAP) are expressed and long cytoplasmic processes are elaborated in the cultured
The low survival rate of graft stem cells after transplantation into recipient tissue is a major obstacle for successful stem cell therapy. After transplantation into the site of spinal cord injury, the stem cells face not only hypoxia due to low oxygen conditions, but also a lack of nutrients caused by damaged tissues and poor vascular supply. To improve the survival of therapeutic stem cells after grafting into the injured spinal cord, we examined the effects of cotransplanting mouse neural st
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the death of motor neurons in the spinal cord and brainstem. ALS has a diverse genetic origin; at least 20 genes have been shown to be related to ALS. Most familial and sporadic cases of ALS are caused by variants of the SOD1, C9orf72, FUS, and TARDBP genes. Genome editing using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR-associated system 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) can provide insights into the underlying gen
OBJECT: Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a potent hemopoietic cytokine that stimulates stem cell proliferation in the bone marrow and inhibits apoptotic cell death in leukocytes. Its effects in the central nervous system, however, are still unclear. The present study was undertaken to determine if GM-CSF can rescue neuronal cells from apoptosis and improve neurological function in a spinal cord injury (SCI) model. METHODS: To study the effect of GM-CSF on apoptotic ne
Cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) is a safe and effective option to improve clinical outcomes (e.g., NDI, VAS, and JOA) in degenerative cervical disc disease and compressive myelopathy. CDA's two main purported benefits have been that it maintains physiologic motion and thereby minimizes the biomechanical stresses placed on adjacent segments as compared to an ACDF. CDA might reduce the degeneration of adjacent segments, and the need for adjacent-level surgery. Reoperation rates of CDA have been r
use of the da Vinci Surgical System to perform an anterior spinal procedure was shown to be safe and effective in a swine animal model. The utilization of this advanced technology shows promise to reduce the incidence of complications compared with other approaches. It requires further testing in animal models and cadavers, along with serial comparisons to current procedures.

Electrospun silk fibroin (SF) scaffolds have drawn much attention because of their resemblance to natural tissue architecture such as extracellular matrix, and the biocompatibility of SF as a candidate material to replace collagen. However, electrospun scaffolds lack the physical integrity of bone tissue scaffolds, which require resistance to mechanical loadings. In this work, we propose membrane-reinforced electrospun SF scaffolds by a serial process of electrospinning and freeze-drying of SF s
