15Among Korean young adults, stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension, compared with normal blood pressure, were associated with increased risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease events. Young adults with hypertension, defined by the 2017 ACC/AHA criteria, may be at increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
BACKGROUND: Although high serum cholesterol in young adults is known to be a predictor for cardiovascular events, there is not enough evidence for the association of cholesterol level change with cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to evaluate whether the change in cholesterol is associated with incidence of CVD among young adults. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined 2 682 045 young adults (aged 20-39 years) who had undergone 2 consecutive national health check-ups provided by Korean Nat
The importance of adherence to antihypertensive treatments for the prevention of cardiovascular disease has not been well elucidated. This study evaluated the effect of antihypertensive medication adherence on specific cardiovascular disease mortality (ischemic heart disease [IHD], cerebral hemorrhage, and cerebral infarction). Our study used data from a 3% sample cohort that was randomly extracted from enrollees of Korean National Health Insurance. Study subjects were aged ≥20 years, were diagn
Lactobacillus gasseri BNR17 is a probiotic strain isolated from human breast milk. Animal studies reported that BNR17 inhibited increases in body weight and adipose tissue weights. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antiobesity effects of BNR17 in humans. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 90 volunteers aged 20-75 years with body mass index (BMI) from 25 to 35 kg/m2 were randomized to receive a placebo, low-dose BNR (BNR-L, 109 CFU/day), or
BACKGROUND: Anemia is thought to increase mortality risks, but the effects of high hemoglobin concentration on survival are unclear. The effect of change in hemoglobin concentrations on survival in the general population is also unknown. This study aimed to examine the effect of hemoglobin concentrations and their changes on cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risks. METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively analyzed a cohort from the NHIS-HEALS (National Health Insurance Service-National Healt
AIMS: Salivary amylase gene (AMY1) copy number variations (CNVs) correlate directly with salivary amylase activity and serum amylase levels. Previously, individuals with high AMY1 CNVs exhibited low postprandial glucose levels and postprandial early insulin surge, suggesting that high AMY1 gene copy numbers may play a role in lowering the risk of insulin resistance. METHODS: We verified the relationship between AMY1 CNVs and homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in a cohort o
White spot syndrome virus (WSSV), an important shrimp pathogen that can affect both salt- and freshwater shrimp, has a high mortality rate that can reach up to 100% in 3-10 days. Therefore, we assessed the susceptibility of Macrobrachium nipponense (De Haan, 1849), a freshwater prawn native to Korea, to artificial WSSV infection. Although rearing in water containing WSSV-infected carcasses did not result in infection, M. nipponense was infected with WSSV after being fed a WSSV-containing diet, p
Health risk appraisal (HRA) is a systematic approach for collecting information regarding individual risk factors, predicting the probability of disease occurrence and death, and linking patients with interventions to promote health and prevent disease. Because the risk factors of cardiovascular disease are well established, several cardiovascular disease risk prediction models have been developed over multiple decades. The health risk appraisal prediction model of the Korean national health scr
Background: The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been increasing in the general population. This study evaluated the association between NAFLD and significant coronary stenosis in asymptomatic adults and evaluated sex-based differences. Methods: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study in participants without previous cardiovascular diseases who visited the Seoul National University Hospital Health Promotion Center for a health checkup between January 1, 2010,
BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and glaucoma are major global health challenges. However, the probable association between them is yet to be fully elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the association between OSA and glaucoma. METHODS: Data for this cross-sectional study were obtained from the eighth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019-2021). From among 9,495 individuals who completed the STOP-Bang questionnaire on OSA (for those aged ≥40 years) and provi
