Acid-Base Disorders in ICU Patients

SJR Q2Electrolytes & Blood PressureOA

Metabolic acid-base disorders are comnom clinical problems in ICU patients. Arterial blood gas analysis and anion gap (AG) are important laboratory data in approaching acid-base interpretation. When measuring the AG, several factors such as albumin have influence on unmeasured anions and unmeasured cations. If a patient has hypoalbuminemia, the AG should be adjusted according to the albumin level. High AG metabolic acidoses including lactic acidosis, ketoacidosis, and ingestion of toxic alcohols

AIM: The aim of this study was to describe the baseline characteristics of autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) in a cohort of Korean patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). METHODS: From April 2011 to February 2016, patients with CKD stage 1-5 (pre-dialysis) were enrolled as an ADPKD sub-cohort of the KoreaN Cohort Study for Outcomes in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease. Baseline characteristics, the correlation of kidney and liver volume and kidney function and the facto

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is one of the main causes of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Genetic information is of the utmost importance in understanding pathogenesis of ADPKD. Therefore, this study aimed to demonstrate the genetic characteristics of ADPKD and their effects on renal function in 749 Korean ADPKD subjects from 524 unrelated families. Genetic studies of PKD1/2 were performed using targeted exome sequencing combined with Sanger sequencing in exon 1 of the PK

Early onset hyperuricemia is a prognostic marker for kidney graft failure: Propensity score matching analysis in a Korean multicenter cohort

It remains inconclusive whether hyperuricemia is a true risk factor for kidney graft failure. In the current study, we investigated the association of hyperuricemia and graft outcome. We performed a multi-center cohort study that included 2620 kidney transplant recipients. The patients were classified as either normouricemic or hyperuricemic at 3 months after transplantation. Hyperuricemia was defined as a serum uric acid level ≥ 7.0 mg/dL in males or ≥ 6.0 mg/dL in females or based on the use o

Hemodynamic factors play an important role in the development and/or progression of diabetic nephropathy. We hypothesized that renal sodium transporter dysregulation might contribute to the hemodynamic alterations in diabetic nephropathy. Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats were used as an animal model for type 2 diabetes. Long Evans Tokushima (LETO) rats were used as controls. Renal sodium transporter regulation was investigated by semiquantitative immunoblotting and immunohistochemi

BACKGROUND: Inherited cystic kidney disease is a spectrum of disorders in which clusters of renal cysts develop as the result of genetic mutation. The exact methods and pipelines for defining genetic mutations of inherited cystic kidney disease are not clear at this point. This 3-year, prospective, multicenter, cohort study was designed to set up a cohort of Korean patients with inherited cystic kidney disease, establish a customized genetic analysis pipeline for each disease subtype, and identi

SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common hereditary kidney disease. It is characterized by cyst growth in the kidneys, resulting in kidney enlargement and end-stage kidney disease. The polycystic kidney disease 1 (PKD1) and PKD2 have been identified as genes related to ADPKD and their significance in the molecular pathology of the disease has been studied. A disease-modifying drug has been approved; therefore, it has become important to identify patients at a high

Discrepancies in Clinic and Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Korean Chronic Kidney Disease Patients

Blood pressure (BP) control is considered the most important treatment for preventing chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and associated cardiovascular complications. However, clinic BP is insufficient to diagnose hypertension (HT) and to monitor overall BP control because it does not correlate well with ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). We enrolled 387 hypertensive CKD patients (stages G1-G4, 58.4% male with median age 61 years) from 3 hospitals in Korea. HT of clinic BP and ABP

Vasopressin and Vasopressin Receptor Antagonists
Yun Kyu Oh
SJR Q2Electrolytes & Blood PressureOA

Vasopressin, a neurohypophyseal peptide hormone, is the endogenous agonist at V1a, V1b, and V2 receptors. The most important physiological function of vasopressin is the maintenance of water homeostasis through interaction with V2 receptors in the kidney. Vasopressin binds to V2 receptor and increases the number of aquaporin-2 at the apical plasma membrane of collecting duct principal cells. That induces high water permeability across the membrane. Several non-peptide vasopressin receptor antago

The relationship between molybdenum and kidney-related disease outcomes, including hyperuricemia, is not well investigated. This study aims to determine whether molybdenum and its antioxidative property are associated with systemic inflammation and kidney-related disease parameters including hyperuricemia. Urinary molybdenum's epidemiological relationship to hyperuricemia and kidney-disease related outcomes was evaluated in 15,370 adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examinati

BACKGROUND: The effect of dyslipidemia on kidney disease outcomes has been inconclusive, and it requires further clarification. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of genetic factors on the association between dyslipidemia and the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) using polygenic risk score (PRS). METHODS: We analyzed data from 373,523 participants from the UK Biobank aged 40-69 years with no history of CKD. Baseline data included plasma levels of total cholesterol, low-density lip
