“Our one great national malady”: Neurasthenia and American Imperial and Masculine Anxiety at the Turn of the Twentieth Century
Yeonsik Jung
SJR Q4Korean Journal of Medical HistoryOA

White upper middle-class Americans at the turn of the twentieth century were entrenched in a battle with a newly discovered, or invented, mental illness called neurasthenia. This essay examines the ways in which the medical discourse of neurasthenia reflected late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century white Anglo-Saxon men's belief in, as well as anxiety over, American values bolstered by their idea of cultural, racial, and sexual superiority and consolidated through a conjunction of medicine

The American Frontier and Edward Bellamy's Utopian Imagination
Yeonsik Jung
SJR Q3˜The œCEA critic/CEA critic

The American Frontier and Edward Bellamy's Utopian Imagination Yeonsik Jung (bio) Edward Bellamy's first important biographer, Arthur E. Morgan, identified the end of the frontier, along with the mass influx of immigrants and the consequent class struggle, as the sources of social and economic stresses in the late-nineteenth-century United States that impelled the writing of Looking Backward, 2000–1887 (1888) (209–10). More recent scholars have followed suit. Darko Suvin labels Bellamy's utopia

The Immunity of Empire: Tropical Medicine, Medical Nativism, and Biopolitics in Sinclair Lewis’s Arrowsmith Yeonsik Jung (bio) In January 1923, Sinclair Lewis set out on a two-month trip to the West Indies, accompanied by his scientific collaborator the bacteriologist Paul de Kruif, to research his novel Arrowsmith, particularly its climactic episode about a plague outbreak on a tropical island. During the trip, he chose “Barbarian” as the working title for this new novel about a young research

A Medical Record of the Mulatto Hysteric: Racial and Sexual Politics in Gertrude Stein’s “Melanctha”
Yeonsik Jung
SJR Q1English Studies

Reading Gertrude Stein’s “Melanctha”, the second story of Three Lives (1909), as a kind of medical record, this essay argues that the author creates the eponymous heroine as a mulatto hysteric by adopting the alleged symptoms and etiologies of hysteria in the early twentieth century such as wandering mind, traumatic sexual experiences, histrionic personality and homosexuality. Examining the racism and misogynism inherent in the medical theories of hysteria, this essay will demonstrate the ways i

Why Is Melanctha Black?: Gertrude Stein, Physiognomy, and the Jewish Question
Yeonsik Jung
SJR Q3Canadian Review of American Studies

This article reads Gertrude Stein’s “Melanctha” as a racial, if not racist, text—a text not solely about blacks but also about Jews in the sense that black characters work as a mask for the author’s concern about her own Jewishness. Nineteenth-century pseudoscientific medical discourses link blackness, Jewishness, and homosexuality—the trinity of “difference”—based on their biological connectedness and similarities. Examining the racism and misogyny particularly inherent in the theories of physi

Ghetto Film and Gangster: Italian Immigrants in Early American Silent Cinema

The Pathology of Fear: Disease and American Dis-ease at the Turn of the Twentieth Century
Yeonsik Jung
OakTrust (Texas A&M University Libraries)OA

Fear is a productive power through which morality, law, and the state are founded and maintained. Focusing on late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Anglo-Saxon American men‟s pathological fear of disease ranging from neurasthenia and hysteria to bubonic plague, this dissertation suggests that turn-of-the-century medical discourse, manifesting the age‟s ideological evaluation of vice and virtue, was instrumental in shaping and sustaining the racial and sexual order of American society.
