15Protection of endothelial integrity has been recognized as a frontline approach to alleviating sepsis progression, yet no effective agent for preserving endothelial integrity is available. Using an unusual anti-angiopoietin 2 (ANG2) antibody, ABTAA (ANG2-binding and TIE2-activating antibody), we show that activation of the endothelial receptor TIE2 protects the vasculature from septic damage and provides survival benefit in three sepsis mouse models. Upon binding to ANG2, ABTAA triggers clusteri
BACKGROUND: The rapid emergence and recovery from general anesthesia afforded by sevoflurane is associated with a high incidence of emergence agitation in children. Small doses of ketamine reduce the incidence of emergence agitation. This study compared the effects of ketamine 0.25 mg/kg and 0.5 mg/kg on emergence agitation and postoperative pain. METHODS: The effects of added intravenous ketamine were evaluated in 93 children, ASA I-II, 2-14 years old, undergoing an adenotonsillectomy. The pati
Wnt/β-catenin signaling plays a crucial role during embryogenesis and tumorigenesis, and in T cells, promotes the differentiation of Th2 cells. However, the role of Wnt signals in the differentiation and maintenance of human Th17 cells remains poorly understood. We found that the higher levels of IL-17 in the synovial fluid of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients compared with that of osteoarthritis (OA) patients were associated with a higher concentration of sFRP1 (secreted Frizzled-Related Prote
We investigated the effect of IV lidocaine on the hemodynamic and bispectral index responses to induction of general anesthesia and endotracheal intubation. Forty patients (ASA I) were randomly allocated into 2 groups of 20 to receive normal saline or lidocaine 1.5 mg/kg IV 30 s after induction. Ninety seconds later, endotracheal intubation was performed. Systolic blood pressure, heart rate, and bispectral index were measured at baseline, 1 min after induction, at preintubation, and every minute
Developmental growth is an intricate process involving the coordinated regulation of the expression of various genes, and microRNAs (miRNAs) play crucial roles in diverse processes throughout animal development. The ecdysone-responsive miRNA, miR-252, is normally upregulated during the pupal and adult stages of Drosophila development. Here, we found that overexpression of miR-252 in the larval fat body decreased total tissue mass through a reduction in both cell size and cell number, causing a c
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Adding opioid to spinal anaesthetic provides additional analgesia during the postoperative period. The purpose of this study was to determine the dose of intrathecal hydromorphone necessary to achieve postoperative pain relief after arthroscopic knee surgery. METHODS: In a prospective, double-blinded parallel, placebo-controlled manner, 60 patients who were undergoing unilateral knee arthroscopy randomly received unilateral spinal anaesthesia with 0.5% hyperbaric bupiva
We experienced a case of malignant hyperthermia (MH) in 6-year-old boy during anesthesia induction for strabismus surgery. It has been generally reported that sevoflurane can induce the delayed onset of MH in the absence of succinylcholine. Our case of MH was elicited after about 2-3 min of sevoflurane administration with N(2)O, O(2) and rocuronium. However, we successfully treated the patient by early recognition of his condition and administering symptomatic treatment and dantrolene.
We explore the determinants of long-term relationship between the buyer and the supplier to help suppliers develope a strategy to build long-term relationship with their buyers. Based upon an extensive literature review, we propose three groups of independent variables which may affect long-term relationship, including (a) environmental factors (product complexity, product importance, source dependence, price sensitivity), (b) relational factors (trust, commitment, satisfaction, intention of exp
BACKGROUND: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) can cause systemic hypoperfusion, which remains undetected by routine monitoring of physiological parameters. Noninvasive tissue perfusion monitoring offers a clinical benefit by detecting low systemic perfusion. In this study, we tried to evaluate whether regional tissue perfusion saturation reflects systemic hypoperfusion during CPB. METHODS: This retrospective study included 29 patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status II-III,
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the most frequent postoperative complications after liver transplantation (LT). Increased serum ammonia levels due to the liver disease itself may affect postoperative renal function. This study aimed to compare the incidence of postoperative AKI according to preoperative serum ammonia levels in patients after LT. Medical records from 436 patients who underwent LT from January 2010 to February 2020 in a single university hospital were retrospectively reviewed.
Nitric acid (HNO3) is frequently used as a solvent, pickling agent, for etching, and as a cleanser. HNO3 fumes may also contain a mixture of HNO3 with various oxides of nitrogen (NO, NO2) [1]. Accidental spillage of HNO3 generates nitrogen oxides that cause chemical pneumonitis when inhaled. In mild cases, there may be no symptoms during the first few hours after exposure, or the typical symptoms of pulmonary edema can appear within 3-24 hours. However, in cases of prolonged exposure, progressiv

Higher preoperative myoglobin levels may enable physicians to identify patients at risk of developing AKI and optimize management accordingly.
