15CD133 is currently believed to be one of the best colorectal cancer stem cell markers. This study aimed to evaluate prognostic significance of CD133 expression in colorectal cancer patients.A total of 303 patients with stage I to III colorectal cancer who underwent curative surgical resection from 2003 to 2008 at a single institution were included. CD133 expression was evaluated using immunohistochemical staining, and clinicopathological data were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were dich
BACKGROUND: With increasing rates of sphincter preservation because of advances in preoperative chemoradiation, restoration of bowel continuity has become a main goal of rectal cancer treatment. However, in many patients, postoperative bowel dysfunction negatively affects the quality of life. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze predictors of bowel dysfunction after sphincter-preserving surgery in patients with rectal cancer. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study. SETTINGS: Assessment of bo
This study shows that discontinuation of prophylactic antibiotics within 24 hours after colorectal surgery has no significant influence on the incidence of SSIs. This study also showed that history of diabetes mellitus and lung disease, long operation time, and perioperative transfusion were associated with increased SSI rates.
Endovascular surgery is now performed more commonly than open surgery for PAD treatment. Balloon angioplasty increased by almost threefold, while the bypass surgery using artificial graft decreased by about 50%.
An association between appendectomy and subsequent gastrointestinal (GI) cancer development has been postulated, although the evidence is limited and inconsistent. To provide clarification, we investigated the link between appendectomy and GI cancers in a large nationwide appendectomy cohort. This cohort was derived from the claims database of the National Health Insurance Service in South Korea and comprised 158,101 patients who had undergone appendectomy between 2007 and 2014. A comparison coh
Purpose: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) has been a major public health issue in the elderly. Advances in endovascular surgery have led to a substantial shift in the management of PAD. Although the nationwide trend of PAD treatment in the Western countries was reported, limited data have been available on this in Korea. This study examined the national trend in the treatment of PAD in Korea over the past decade. Methods: Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service data were used. We sought
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the clinical course and prognostic factors after isolated local recurrence (iLR) and to identify the predictive factors for R0 resection of locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 76 patients with iLR who had undergone radical surgery for a primary tumor from 2003 to 2015. RESULTS: The iLR rate was 2.5%. From 76 patients, 39 patients underwent R0 resection for iLR. Multivariate
Age of >50 years, recurrent episodes, and CRP levels are potential predictors for conservative management failure of patients with right-sided colonic diverticulitis. Further studies are warranted to identify candidates requiring early surgical intervention.
In ypstage 2 rectal cancer patients, aCT after nCRT and total mesorectal excision affected both DFS and OS; however, only patients who completed planned aCT exhibited survival benefits. Therefore, improving patients' compliance with the completion of aCT is desirable.
Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is a rare cutaneous neoplasm. Perianal Paget disease (PPD) is a subset of EMPD manifesting perianal lesions. Two cases of PPD in Severance Hospital are described in this article. A 65-year-old female and 78-year-old male patients visited our institution because of an unhealed perianal skin lesion despite treatment for a long period with topical agents. PPD was diagnosed by skin biopsies in both cases, and the patients underwent surgical treatment. Clinical manif
Approximately one-third of patients with colorectal cancer are estimated to be diagnosed with synchronous liver metastasis (LM). The only method to get cured is to achieve curative resection for both primary and LM. When it comes to locally advanced rectal cancer with synchronous LM, determination of the treatment strategy for each individual is a quite complex procedure, because it demands sophisticated consideration for both local and systemic control. Timing for the application of systemic ch
This review article explores advanced surgical approaches and anatomical insights for tailoring rectal cancer surgery, particularly focusing on low-lying rectal cancer. With the evolution of imaging technologies, precise preoperative planning has become possible, enhancing the visualization of anatomy surrounding the rectum and enabling more accurate assessments of circumferential resection margin (CRM) involvement. The article emphasizes the dynamic nature of rectal cancer treatment, advocating
Owing to in-hospital transmission of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital, a university-affiliated hospital in South Korea, was temporarily closed for disinfection in March 2020. This study aimed to investigate the impact of both the hospital shutdown and the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic on short-term outcomes of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. We retrospectively reviewed the clinicopathologic data of 607 patients who were surgically treated for CRC from May 2018 t
